That’s what I wonder every time I read one of those app criticisms. I barely use it except for Night mode occasionally since I live in an apt. Have the full system (Arc+sub3+ones) connected to ATV and don’t remember having issues in the recent months.

Same here. I have the arc, sub, and ones. It sounds great. I remember using the app when I first got it to control the volume but now I just use my remote. Every once in a while I'll use the app to play music on Spotify and never had any issues. So that's why i'm also wondering what people are doing in the app. It seems pretty basic to me.

The app is used for changing settings, grouping and ungrouping different speakers, playing music using various integrated music services, etc. It’s not some superfluous add on.

I can’t even use the app on my iPhone because it insists I’m not the owner of the Sonos system that it is associated with, but it keeps me in an endless loop whenever I try to log in to show that I am in fact the owner of the system.

So, I don’t think I could even add one of these new products to my system if I wanted to, given the bugs in the app itself. Not to mention they literally made statements that they wouldn’t release any new products until they fixed their app (lol).

It’s a shame because they make incredible speakers such as the Move and the Era 300s paired together for music (why anyone would only use them as rear surrounds for tv and film is perplexing). I’ll stick to my current Arc setup though, since it feels like we are still a ways away from everything simply working again.

Genuine question: What are you all using the app for? I'm not trying to downplay the impact of the botched app release.

After the initial setup of the system years ago, I now use it just to set up a new speaker or change some settings every few months, and that's it. I'd understand its necessity in Android or mixed-platform homes. But with voice control and AirPlay's ability to play content and dis/connect speakers together (which can also be done physically), I don't see any other need for the app.

What am I missing out on? I feel like I may not be using the full potential of my system or maybe I'm using it in some wrong(less optimal) way, seeing how many of you rely heavily on the app for one reason or another.

Sonos is overrated for home theater i had a arc and gen 3 sub plus the Sonos play for surrounds . Switched to 3.1 set up then moved up 5.2 setup and the 3.1 sounded better then 5.2 is just amazing.

Long long ago, I sold all my Sonos stuff in favor of Denon Home. Never looked back. Maybe, Sonos is just...overpriced after all?

Just upgraded rear channels to Era 300s and the set up broke with a meaningless error message, which resulted in a 3 hour chat session with a tech support who repeatedly wrongly claimed that I need to talk to my ISP to fix the issue And incorrectly used technical networking terms in ways that created even more confusion.

The solution was to rerun the setup on all speakers after the auto setup connected speakers to a different wifi network. They could have told me this 5 minutes into the call, rather than 3 hours later.

I added a second sub with the old app at the start of the year and had no setup issues at all.

The absolute hubris of them launching a £1000 soundbar after their catastrophic own goal ****up of their app. Never giving that company more money ever again

Happy to see the new products but would like to see the app fully fixed first.

In the market for an Arc to upgrade our Beam (Gen 2) whether that’s this new Ultra or finding a nice deal on the 1st Gen over Black Friday.

Looking forward to the reviews.

Many Sonos systems predate Airplay 2. The Play line for example are over a decade old and are still going strong.

And there's Android users.

And there's people who use the system with other household members where they need shared queues and prefer for music to not cut out when one of the phones leaves the house or needs to be put to a different use. I know Airplay 2 supports that partially but apparently not for...

Other Music and audio sources. Not everyone uses Apple Music exclusively and need all the usability features across different services.

here's the truth, companies are finding moving to the luxury segment gives them more margins so they are all trying to do that. the price increase that come from moving to the luxury segment is not proportional to the extra production cost. my view is customers need to rebel against all these price increases. the whole luxury segment is about manipulating people's desires to seem 'successful.' Even bang and olufsen released $1500 bluetooth headphones without any major improvement with the idea that it is just a 'luxury' product, which means you buy this to communicate to the world you can afford 1500 headphones. but all this shows in reality, if one is thinking with a critical mind, bang and olufsen is employing evil marketing tactics to play on the insecurities of people and the person was dumb enough to fall for it and waste 1500 on something he really doesn't need.
Its kind of a supreme irony that you say this in an Apple forum, but it's entirely true.

Take a very small consumer goods segment: Back when I was involved with sites like Head-Fi, the concept of anything more then a $30 headphone (expected to last for years) was unimaginable to a vast majority of the consumer base despite Walkmans being very popular, never mind the $500-$10K phones I was rotating (which was on an otherworldly planet of insanity to them). Now, $150+ 3-year disposable earbuds are approaching the norm.

Aspiration amplified by social media drove Beatsbydre, and aspiration amplified by social media drove Apple adoption. The same aspiration drove uber, doordash, etc. Aspiration is also doing a really good job of making the lower middle class working class, and the working class even more working class. And you don't notice it most of the time since you're in a social media venn diagram among your peers.

Exactly the same, after install I never touch the app, maybe for a Trueplay tweak but nothing else. Stream via other apps Spotify direct and all is golden and seamless.

New app version works great for my 19 speakers. Yeah that first version broke nearly everything but all working well for months now. Ultra on order and regular arc heading for bedroom
You're not alone, but have the Ultra sub 4 combo coming w/ my '21 ARC going to an office/BU bedroom.

My app is perfect. Stop with the general broad statements. So yea, I’ll keep buying from them.
Agreed.

I mean, there's obviously some issue because there's enough critical mass of complaints to signal that.

But personally speaking, uh... I dont know what those are? My TV is wired to 1 Sonos system so it always works. My phone and laptop Airplays to other devices and those always work. Sometimes I ask use voice guidance to ask the devices to play from their own sources and that works too.

My only gripe is the Roam + Bluetooth interface is not intuitive, and my Arc-based system once in a blue moon randomly plays music.

I still like the company although the stock has been a bit disappointing.

I don’t understand why none of these soundbar + subwoofer setups even offer an option to add discrete left and right speakers and have the soundbar be an actual center channel 🤦.
For the narrower Ray or Beam maybe. For the Arc line it's way overkill, because it already produces a wide soundstage. (though I don't think the the upfiring height field is great)

Although I'd really recommend getting a quality receiver and some solid speakers. A pair of Bowers 606s for $1,100 are going to be way better, especially for music.
I had a pair of 6-series BW. You also need a receiver. And to wire them. And a stand to place them. For music-only sure it's a better option. For a multi-purpose hometheater/multimedia setup, there's a lot of convenience to the wifi and connected functionality
