No OIS is disappointing and no 4k video. I still think the camera will be better than the 5s, but if it's not significantly better I'll go for the 5s.

Lack of 4K video is dissapointing? Man these mindless spec/number wars really are working on consumers.

It's insane. People have no idea why they think they need things, but best believe..they need 'em.

No image stabilization seems a little crazy, though..

Oh well, I can't remember the last time Verizon sold a Sony phone anyhow, so this is just another cool phone missed out on without even having a chance to try it out, business as usual.

Ha ha true. I tend to keep my phones for 2 years and just want to ensure that it's future proofed and still sell able in a couple of years. I just sold my 2 yr old Iphone for $350(au).

no 4k video.

Not sure how interesting 4K is in ordinary consumer electronics until they start combining it with the recently approved compression standard H.265 to reduced the amount of storage/bandwidth required.

Of course it has. Sony calls it SteadyShot. How good it is compared to e.g. OIS, I don't know.

Anyway, 1080p video sample http://www.youtube.com/v/23eRgGUJp3c&hl=en_US&fs=1&

Based on the video you've linked to, it's poor. (Assuming it was on, of course.) Which isn't anything new: after all, it's plain electronic stabilization (which also means the FOV gets further narrow.)

----------

Like I said, seemed crazy. Almost unbelievable, honestly..so that makes sense that it's called something else.

Sony always did like to keep things proprietary, why stop now, right?

It's not proprietary technology - just a fancy name for plain and simple electronic (and pretty poor) IS present in tons of other smartphones too (e.g., iPhone 4S/5, GS4 etc).

Well, if you do have the storage (and assuming the phone is capable of storing quality recording - not an over-compressed, blocky one), why not? In, say, a year or two, 4K displays will be comparatively affordable. THEN, you'll be happy to have started shooting 4K earlier.

----------

Just me, but this device left me underwhelmed.

Me too. The LG G2 seems to be a much better choice.

So my only issue now is whether to buy this phone on a stupidly expensive contract or SIM free...and if I buy the black version or dare to be different and get purple (purple really does look decent in the flesh :p)

I'm all about the white one, personally. :) Hands down. One of the most beautifully made phones, IMO.

If there is a GPE, I predict Google will go with white, as they did with the S4 and the HTC One (sort of). I can only hope there will be a GPE...

Same, although I like Sonys clean aesthetic, I wasn't too keen on the interface.

In the UK, O2 are offering a QX-10 lens if you pre-order. You have to send off some form when the phone arrives and you'll be sent one.

Very tempted to get one when it comes to the UK; I definitely prefer the look of the UI compared to Touchwiz and LG's offering. Just need to see how the big the phone will feel in the hand, but it should be fine.

Now, white or black? :D

It doesn't look or feel much bigger than a S4 but the more angular design means it doesn't fit as comfortably. The finish is more "premium" though so it does feel better in the hand. It's slightly heavier then the S4 too but that's not a bad thing.

I tried the Z1 today whilst in O2, and the screen looked better than the Xperia Z for sure. Size wise, it is one very big phone with the bezels being around the same size as my iPhone 4S. I wasn't too bothered about the size of them before, but after having the phone in hand it did make the device a rather large device, possibly too large for my liking.

Using my z1 for 2 days now. Let me say this device is just drop dead GORGEOUS. BETTER looking then the iphone in my opinion.

No lag whatsover, and so many more apps then my old windows phone.

Only real negative is the pictures in low light are not as good as the 920. And no oIS kinda blows.

Other than that, the 64 gb sd slot is more then enough.

Post pictures! I don't know why I'm asking for this. Maybe because I agree it's a gorgeous phone.

What color did you get it in?

There's been no info on a GPE of this phone, huh?

Apparently, some Z1s are shipping with an inferior screen. I think this an explanation for the somewhat inconsistent feedback on the screen quality.

Just hope the general retail units would have the better Z Ultra-like screen.

How comfortable is it to hold?

I had a Motorola Triumph back in the day that had similar sharp corners as the Z1. While it was fine for short calls, during longer calls, the sharp corners would dig into my palms and would make it a very uncomfortable experience. I have been wary of phones with sharp corners since then.

The Z1 doesn't have sharp corners like the Z. Everything has be rounded at the edges resulting in a phone that is comfortable to hold.

I've had this device for about a month now and i'm extremely impressed with it. i was deliberating between a few phones notably the note 3 and the upcoming nexus 5 but decided on this after i got the chance to mess around with its predecessor the "Z0". Here's my two pence.

The design and build quality is amazing, its quite easily the nicest phone I've ever had the pleasure to hold bar none. I do case it up for the added protection as its still glass but i do often find myself removing it from its case when i'm stationary to experience it in all its natural glory. The screen size is great too, was a little scared it would be too big but personally i could even go another .2 - .3 inches bigger. Still an welcome increase of real estate to my previous Galaxy Nexus without dwarfing it. The screen itself is stunning colours are vivid and text looks very sharp. while not quite as nice as the screen featured in my iPod touch 5G, it is a very close contest.

The only drawback is the viewing angles. its far from a deal breaker as i can only notice any type of colour distortion when i tilt the phone to an acute angle off centre from myself.

Sony's take on Android is very nice. i was a little scared to move away from stock but for all intents and purposes this is pretty much stock with very little bloat. The UI is very stylish and serves as a nice departure to the norm i've grown too accustomed to with stock android. They've also added a few nice additions that i really appreciate such as the ability to add widgets by long pressing the home screen, toggles on the main screen of its notification centre, folders in the app drawer and being able to sort them in numerous ways. A big feature i consider personally is the ability to pair a DS3 controller without having to root the phone.

I haven't tried it with any games with controller support but i have tried it with the playstation emulator and it works a charm once the buttons have been mapped. I've also used Miracast to mirror my phone to my TV and its like having a PS Vita TV. Have also used it with xbmc in the same fashion.

As for hardware the phone performs great as you would expect of any phone with comparable specs. Things load fast apps, web pages you name it. The only negative i can find is the storage capacity. There's roughly 11GB available after formatting and pre installed software. Not a great amount but i've offset this with a 64gb sd card which keeps all my media with the on-board storage strictly for apps. Not a professional photographer by any stretch of the imagination but the camera is great and gets the job done when i've needed it. Battery life is decent, i can easily get more than a day with moderate use but there is room for improvement.

Like the Galaxy Nexus i can see myself keeping this phone for the next few years. I may seriously consider staying with this brand too if they stay par the course with their Skin, increase the onboard storage to 32GB and Improve the battery life.

I've like every iteration of sony phones that they put out the last two years. From the build quality to their flavored android skin. Those damn viewing angles are always a deal breaker however. I'm hoping next year they finally get it right.
