I think it's a good looking phone and would take a good long look at a GPE version, until I saw the dimensions. It's significantly bigger than both the HTC One and Galaxy S4, two devices I place at the limit of my preferred size.

Shame too, because we spend a lot of time outdoors (beach, pool, park) and coupled with the daily Florida afternoon thunderstorms, was excited about the waterproof nature of the device.

The size is a big turn off for me too, especially since the square-design doesn't lend a very ergonomic or comfortable hold. The fact that it's bigger than the current Z is a little frustrating too.

Is there any reason why it's bigger? I suspect the 20.7 MP camera might having something to do with it?

Despite that, I'm interested in a GPE of the Xperia. I'll determine whether the size bothers me or not when I actually handle one in person.

I've always wanted a better camera and home-screen buttons (and a side power button). Along with stock Android and timely updates from Google, the GPE Xperia could be a winner. It's probably one of my favorite designs too. Everything about it screams upscale, powerful, classy -- especially the white one. If there is no GPE, though, I likely won't bother.

I can't wait for reviews.

----------

Serious question, where is the USB port?

On the Z, apart from the headphone flap, there is no reason to open any other flap. To charge you use the dock which is much nicer and easier to do.

The Ultra and the Z1 now have open headphone ports but are still able to maintain the waterproof feature. Thus, now there is no reason why any flaps ever need to be opened after the initial installation of the sim and memory card.

The dock wont work if you use a case and I don't really want to buy multiple docks for home/work etc.

Isn't the micro USB behind the panel on the top right edge?

As far as increase in size, it may be due in part to the camera but as it's only 0.4mm thicker than the Z yet has a 3000 mAh battery (vs. 2330 mAh in the Z), I'd guess that may have something to do with it--spread everything out a bit rather than make it thicker.

Interesting.

I'll withhold judgment until I hold one in hand. Hopefully it'll be manageable.

I'm looking for a decent phone for my wife. This might be the one if Sony can release it with pentaband HSPA and LTE. The only Android in the market right now that meets that criteria is the Xperia ZL C6506, so there is hope that a true world phone version will be released.

Nothing about this phone makes me want to trade in my iPhone 5 or GS4.

Iphone 5 is one obsolete machine. I was using my dad's iphone 4s, cause my 920 battery died, and it was a complete mind **** to go back to using such a small screen.

It was like playing with a kids toy. The phone was so SMALL.

Snap 800 is almost guaranteed to make android absolutely no lag.

Now if that also comes in a ZL type shape then I'm getting it for sure.

My next phone will be the Z1, Ultra or Note 3.

I prefer the Ultras design over the Z1 but the Z1 has a much better camera.
The Note 3 will probably have better specs but look ugly as sin if history is to go by.

Decisions, decisions.

Will have a clearer view tomorrow.

Battery has been confirmed at 3000 mah not 3100mah although whats 100mah in the real world

Aside from the size, I think the other sore spot of this device is the 16GB storage. Latest leaks says that's the max size. Sony is letting the expandable microSD card do the rest of the work. But my understanding is that SD cards can't carry the load of your apps? It can only carry media like music, pictures, videos? How is accessing music from the SD card like? Is there "lag" or anything as it reads off the card?

With the software taking up 4-5 GBs of that 16GB, you're left with ~11 or so GB to spare for apps. Kind of low...

16GB really needs to go the way of the dinosaur. It's one thing HTC got right -- reserved only for mid-rangers.

The Ultras read speed from sd card has been confirmed as the fastest on any smartphone. I therefore doubt that lag will be an issue. As for apps etc you are correct in that they cant be saved on the sd card. Sure 32gb is better but I personally have not had any issue with the 16gb on my Z with a 64gb card.

Having said that I believe the Note 3 will come in 32gb and 64gb versions. There always appear to be something that makes a new Sony handset fall behind the crowd. However, I just love the Zs exterior design. This is personally the most important quality in any of my phones.

There's no denying the Z1 is a beauty. Everything about it screams power, sophistication, class, elegance. I'm enamored by the white one, in particular.

So the only thing that the microSD card can't store is apps, right? Is there anything else I should be worried about? And the music player will know to read from the mSD card automatically, right? I won't have to "find" my music each time, will I? This is new to me so thanks in advanced for the answers.

The safest way you should think about it is that only music, pictures and videos can be saved on the sd card. Everything else usually has to be saved on the phone. In reality a few other things can also be saved on the sd card but it depends.

Yes your music player will automatically read from the sd card.

Good to know. That doesn't sound too bad. Thanks.

Now... if they'll make a GPE...

Now THIS is a 2013 flagship product. Gorgeous hardware paired with top of the line specs and a (hopefully) boss camera. I'd be all over this if it actually hit America in a decent amount of time after launch.

If no oIS i will be :(

So will I. Nevertheless, the new Smart Cameras / Lens of Sony are very promising. They mean I can go with the next Nexus, which surely will have a low-quality camera, and an external high-quality (incl. OIS) lens of the RX100 MkII, both for comparatively cheap.

That is, I don't need to get (and pay the premium price over the Nexus) the LG G2 for its excellent (OIS etc.) camera.

Sony always makes decent phones but they are always so big!

5.0" display yet such a large device, it goes slightly beyond my everyday comfort zone.

Disappointed with the camera. No OIS and no new innovations basically, just a megapixel increase.

I wish Sony released a camera version of Honami with a big sensor.

Pics and videos of early impressions from Sony's events are all over the web. Nothing we don't already know about.

I still feel the same way. Gorgeous device, excellent improvements from the original Z, but still feel it may be too big for my liking. Curse those insane bezels.

It's apparently even more waterproof now, which I suspect lead to the slightly taller design. Of course, I'm sure the new speakers, the dedicated camera button, new screen, and larger battery had something to do with it, too. It's just a damn shame it got bigger.

Also, doesn't it look like a Nokia phone to anyone? Heh.

Please let there be a GPE!

EDIT: Argh, it also got slightly thicker and slightly heavier, too. Bummer.

The three-dimensional increases in size are putting me off too. Weren't these the same guys that gave us the ZL? Phones are getting too damn big.

Of course, the specs are amazing. But if Motorola can squeeze an even bigger battery into a more compact frame (Droid Maxx), I'm nonplussed as to why Sony couldn't, or choose not to.
