Just announced at CES is the $900 Sony Vaio P netbook. It looks pretty different from most other netbooks, in that it's a very wide design. It has a 1600x768 display.

I think it looks amazing. I'd be a little worried about navigation, with no trackpad, but this is really where netbooks need to be. They need to stop basing themselves on full size laptops and come up with something like this.

No word on the internal specs... yet.

I know it's sweet! I wish Apple would come out with something like that.

It's not a netbook though atleast I took netbooks to be under $400

edit: gizmodo says it has 1.33ghz atom 2gb

The trackpoint (if it's like the ThinkPad ones) should be a better implementation than the tiny trackpads on netbooks.

I think that is a good idea for a small laptop. Trackpad takes sooo much room on a notebook of that size

Too bad there's no palmrest…

I hope the keyboard is semi-usable, so I don't have to lug around an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard.

Wow.. this is really cool! I think the form factor is kind of goofy though.. What is a 8" 2:1 resolution screen useful for? I want to see how this stacks up to the HP 2140 that is coming out, too.

Very nice-looking, and the "nipple" comeback is a nice idea for netbooks, trackpads do take up a lot of space (or, if they don't take space, are too small to be truly usable).

I don't like the wide bevels on either side of the screen. Why not take up the whole area with the LCD? Weird resolutions be damned, I want thin bevels! ;)

Still sticking with my Lenovo Ideapad though, those things are a tad pricey!

Nice... I might get one of these. Always been looking for something like this. MBA is overkill for my ultra portable needs. That keyboard over at Sony's site looks very similar to the MacBook/Pro keys so I won't have to get used to itty bitty keys.

the nub is ok for moving the cursor around the screen but I have an IBM notebook who are known for those and the click response is really bad. your suppose to be able to tap the nub top and have it click like a track pad but it works like crap. On the IBM i had to navigate with the nub and click with a regular button. the tap response is too poor otherwise.

i dont care for this sony design much. id rather have a reg resolution 10 inch then this wonky long wallet like thing they have created.

You arent supposed to click with the nub on this, there are (microscopic) buttons...

Specs don't look to bad.

1.33 GHz Intel Atom (512 kb L2 cache)
533 MHz FSB
60 GB HDD, 64 GB SSD, or 128 GB SSD
2 GB RAM (DDR2 SDAM)
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
Integrated HSPA Tri-band (890, 1200, 1900 MHz) Mobile Broadband

If you want to see the specs yourself here's the link for the high end model. Thought I would save everyone from Sony's Flashbloat.

Sorry, I couldn't find info on the graphics chip.

Here's the most important question...

Can it run OSx86? And if so, how snappy will Safari be?

Sony does an awesome job of hardware design, but sometimes their software isn't up to par. The TZ I had was loaded down with so much bloatware that it would barely start up.

That said, I'm saving my pennies.

The only things that justify a $900 price are the resolution and the design. Everything else and more can be found on other netbooks with much lower price tags.
