If the price was a little lower, I would pull the trigger on one of these! It would be a great Hackintosh project.

Sony came up with the "island" style keyboard, not Apple.

I can almost justify the $900 [€650] pricetag. €1000 I cannot. That is flipping ridiculous.

Also, I thought it was going to have a track "ball" as on the mighty mouse (and my powerbook 100!), which I was interested in. Track nubs suck though.

Specs don't look to bad.

1.33 GHz Intel Atom (512 kb L2 cache)
533 MHz FSB
60 GB HDD, 64 GB SSD, or 128 GB SSD
2 GB RAM (DDR2 SDAM)
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
Integrated HSPA Tri-band (890, 1200, 1900 MHz) Mobile Broadband

If you want to see the specs yourself here's the link for the high end model. Thought I would save everyone from Sony's Flashbloat.

Sorry, I couldn't find info on the graphics chip.

Don

graphics is probably GMA 950

Yep, in 2003 or 2004.

That's a very nice looking netbook. But I don't see the point of its form-factor. I don't see this being usable for anything other than watching wide aspect ratio videos. Browsing or using Word on that screen would be painful.

Of course, I haven't seen it in person yet, so I can't judge.

Remember Steve Job's keynote introducing the first Tibook (the one that started the one inch think Powerbook/Macbook design trend?). Steve said "We want the POWER and the SEX." He was comparing Apple's portable with Sony's. Apple for a long time now always seem to take cues from Sony in portable hardware design.

*prays quietly*

So when will Apple finally take some major clue (*cough* Blu-Ray *cough*) from Sony's VAIO line?

The screen resolution is the one thing that really sets this thing apart. I'm looking at my MacBook screen, and this Vaio P has a higher resolution and would allow me to have 2 documents, emails, etc, side-by-side. That's awesome, although I wish the device was a bit larger. In fact, I wish there was a 1 inch palmrest below the keyboard just so that there was something there.

I think I prefer the new HP Mini-note 2140, but only after the optional 1365 x 768 screen becomes available. If it was as OS X friendly as the Dell Mini 9 or MSI Wind U120, it could literally be a replacement for a MacBook (for me). It's also aluminium, and has a keyboard that makes it look a bit like the old 12" Powerbook. :)

People have ran Mac OS X on MSI Wind, which is literally the same processor. Runs fine other than a couple of drivers here and there.

That has very little to do with OSx86 compatibility. Few netbooks can be configured to work perfectly despite the fact that all netbooks use the Intel Atom. HP was the only one using the Via C7-M (not even the Nano), and they're using Intel Atoms now.

I want one in red.

I want one in green. It's a beautiful colour.

you know, the giant bezels on the sides of the screens make it look like that of a nintendo ds.

[/random]

i wonder if it can run game emulators well…

Put it at 599, and maybe you'd have a sale(if it was OS X, I'm sold) but 900 is just to much, there are plenty of other netbooks with fine resolutions, and nice designs.

Though its nice to have someone filling this role in the market.

Plenty of others? Hell no. EEE sucks (trackpad + button is garbage, keyboard is too). MSI Wind sucks. Dell Mini 9 (cheap plastic design, but looks half good) kind of is okish. Lenovo S10 (the best thus far, before Sony P) is pretty awesome. Acer Aspire One (small ass trackpad and feels very flaky). HP Mini (POS CPU and keyboard is crap, trackpad is too). The Sony P actually is the best I've seen thus far. Lenovo S10 would be a close second.

I agree. Sony makes damn good computers, but they ruin them by putting Windows on them. If I could have a VAIO that I could easily (non-hackintosh) run OS X on, I would be getting a Sony laptop instead of a MBP (when I get one).

In my imagination
my wallet trembles. I think I can ALMOST justify this purchase.... almost....

Right. The only thing holding me back actually is usability of it without that trackpad. I like the design, and once again it shows PC makers being innovative far and beyond anything Apple could make, but I really need to see if I can use it without the trackpad.

Just went to Sony's sight..... the 4 hour battery is a bit disappointing. Only because this would be a book that is used on the go preferably without the power cable in the bag with me. There is an optional 128GB SSD, USB, HDMI port so it could be a nice machine to dump photos to, instead of an Epson Multimedia viewer.

Not to mention that this thing has HDMI, 2 USB ports, SD card reader and Memory Stick reader, while the MBA does not.... just found it funny.

Why are they copying Apple Keyboard Design ?
You know I was wondering about that too. Everbody copies Apple. I guess because nobody else has slightest amount of creativity in them. So they just copy Apple. It makes me so mad that I want to eat 20 banana's in a row, stare at the dancing icons on my dock and then finally wish everyone who copied Apple would grow tails.
Thanks.

That design wasn't apples in the first place.....
