Sony?

i just ordered the macbook air 11 inch. but i was just looking around and seen that sony also has a great 11 inch laptop. the vaio x. it has 10 HOUR BATTERY for an 11 inch laptop and weighs in at 1.6 pounds. .... Now dont get me wrong i would not get it because i dont like windows, but it seems like this laptop doesn't get the recognition it deserves. what do you guys think?

The battery lasts 2.5 hours, but sony give you another extended battery which gives the 12 hour figure. The extended battery thing is fooking ugly.

But I've said many times on these forums already....this is just the beginning. Over the next few months you will see a DELUGE of new, thin/small form-factor laptops introduced from Dell, HP, Lenovo, Sony, Asus and others meant to compete with the 11" MBA Netbook. Apple has "re-engineered" the entire netbook marketplace and likely the hype they have created will take the netbook marketplace in brand new directions aimed not downwards towards the $200 el-cheapo models but instead towards premium models.

This is just the first shot. And LOL at the extended battery. I bet that thing weighs more than the entire laptop combined.

Again, anyone who doesn't realize that Apple has entered the netbook market, and totally changed the rules, is living with the 2+ year old definition of "netbook."

They have indeed, however, the specs they will end up coming up with purely to get bragging rights will either stifle performance to get battery time, or stifle battery time to get performance. As usual, and similar to the ipod, ipad, and the iphone, apple are the benchmark. They wait for apple to make its move, then come in after.

With extended battery total battery life is 3 + 12 = 15 hours. The idea makes sense for many people. Apart from college students, most people have access to power outlets all the time. 3 hours is more than adequate for occasional interruptions (like meeting). Then, when you need to fly to Tokyo, you can attach the extended battery.

Did not Sony re-engineered it first with their VAIO X which BTW remains the thinnest and lightest (by a big margin) laptop?

Nothing in this life is that simple. Better choice will greatly depend on what you value more. Some people will prefer thinner and much lighter laptop, others will prefer MBA, and some might prefer VAIO Z which is much more powerful than any Apple laptop.

In other news, Sony are now supplying 2 extended batteries, for an incredible 27 hours battery life, unseen before in the computing world.

3 hours, or 15 hours, it matters not one jot. In the form factor that the sony uses, it has 3 hours of battery. That is not enough, especially considering that it isn't exactly powerful, a slower FSBus, and processor. No graphics card, and I can;t see what wifi standard it carries.

I can carry an external battery for my mba, and get an 'amazing' battery life.

I've never been a fan of Sony products and I've owned multiple Vaio's over the years. But I think Sony will continue to refine the X model and likely bring some of the Z's 'premium' aspects to it over time.

Nice defense for a Windows machine as usual coming from you, but I guess you conveniently forgot that it uses a slow Atom processor with 533mhz system bus with the extremely old DDR2 ram and maximum ram is 2GB, plus the keyboard is cramped which sucks and it cost much more than the MBA. But it makes for a great movie watching toy with the external brick of a battery while flying to Tokyo.

In the guys review (linked above) he seems to claim that this Atom processor runs at 2.0ghz and is "very fast." I don't know enough about the remainder of the tech of the thing but considering that Apple is using older C2D tech in their MBA netbooks also, this seems to be a bit of the pot calling the kettle black don't you think????

Nope, actually not. You should brush up a bit on your technical knowledge. A 2GHz Atom processor with 533Mhz system bus with DDR2 ram doesn't come close in speed to the MBA's 1.4Ghz Core 2 Duo with 800Mhz system bus with DDR3 ram. No pot here, you just need to read up on CPU technology before posting a rebuttal.
