I have to say that if you really want to identify the most technologically innovative company making notebooks today that company would have to be Sony. The Vaio Z is unarguably the best performing 13.3" business laptop on the market today bar none. Apple wouldn't even get a look in against it with any of its 13.3" machines. Indeed, I would venture to suggest that it is the best laptop of any size on the market today.

It may stick in some of your craws but it's a simple fact and I speak as someone who intends to buy a 13.3" MBA because I feel that it's currently the best compromise on the market today in terms of weight/performance. I'd like a Sony Vaio Z but I won't buy one until they add USB 3.0 to it.

Cheers,

You're purposely not getting the point (why does that surprise me?). So I guess myself and a few others can deduce that you are trying to dismiss the fact that Apple invented their own type of trackpad into their computers and it's been such a huge success that other PC manufacturers are trying to copy it. Apple didn't see some chinese manufacturer invent the multitouch glass trackpad and decided to put it in their computers, they innovated the feature. You seem to have the same problem as Lilo does with understanding the word Innovation.

Seems to me it's people claiming only Apple is innovative that have a problem with the word. Apple is one company, some stuff they do is innovative, but it is wrong to dismiss every other vendors as copy cats.

Sony basically invented the chicklet keyboard that Apple now uses on every thing. Apple lifted that from Sony, as one example.

Seriously, the whole industry is based off innovators and then people copying the idea. Again, all those features lilo listed are innovations and they aren't Apple innovations. Sure when Dell gets to them, it might not be innovative of them, but it was from someone else.

My problem with the Vaio Z is that it is expensive. 1920x1080 screen in a 13.3" factor ? Sorry, that is damn sexy right there. Apple is only starting to push the density on their screens, someone Dell has been offering as options for the last 10 years. 1440x900 on a 15" laptop is just way too ridiculous in 2010 (yes, I know of the high res option, that's the point, it should be base, and the high res option should be even higher!).

But Apple did not invent a trackpad. It was invented by (or at least first used on a keyboard) by Apollo Computer, Inc:

Use of glass is not such a big innovation. Not everybody even likes it.

I've yet to see Win7 run this smooth on anything with a 1.4G processor + 2GB RAM.
*disclaimer*
I'm _not_ advocating for any platform, since I use & enjoy each for their individual strengths.

Responding to the quoted comment: one look at a 1.2GHz VAIO Y running Win 7 w/ 2GB amazed me. Personally I have a distinct preference for OS X, yet real progress has been made with Windows. Those who continue to blindly bash it are, well...

I much prefer OSX over Windows as well, but Win7 has come a long ways when it comes to UI responsiveness.

Let's keep the discussion on topic and lose all the personal bickering and name-calling (calling someone a troll is an insult).

It certainly is expensive but if you're prepared to pay Apple prices then you're not exactly a stranger to paying more for a brand with superior design are you;)? I had a Dell Inspiron 8100 with a 1600x1200 display from around 2001 and I loved that machine. The resolution was perfect but then I do have pretty good near sight for a guy of my age;). The 1920x1080 display of the Vaio Z with the blu-ray player is my dream combination. I'll almost certainly get one next even though I won't really need it if I have the MBA, it's just my ideal laptop.

Cheers,

I was at a SonyStyle store today and looked at the X series. First thing I looked at was the Windows Experience Index. 2.7 for CPU and 2.4 for graphics. Anyone know the Index for the 11" MBA (1.4GHz or 1.6GHz) for comparison?
