While I think the :apple: Watch is the best smart watch out, I think $349 is too much. I also don't see any real justification for it. If it could do blood pressure and additional things, than that's a whole different story.

Look wise, it's very nice and fashionable. The design makes sense from a usability standpoint and I think Apple hit it out the park. The Moto 360 is nice but the design doesn't make sense. Cut off text is NOT a user experience most folks want. Motorola knows better and will correct this next version.

Google is known for half assing things and sometimes they don't even finish so I wonder about the commitment to Android Wear. A new operating system like Apple did makes more sense. Anyone that bought the 360 should be returning it ASAP. Basically you are beta testing Google's software and I'm sure they will create a new OS for wearables going forward. If you gonna spend your money, do you wan it to go to incomplete products rushed out the door or well thought out products that bring significant functionality and value?

If it only brought functionality as a timepiece, $250 is change to most people here that like it regardless.

That's why the things Motorola scrimped on make no sense IMO. They could have put in a modern SoC and improved battery life and still charged $350 for it all day long. It's such a better looking watch than the apple watch, unfortunately apple really put some nice stuff into their watch. Such an ugly watch, but it has some great specs where the Moto 360 is such a beautiful watch with some crappy specs.

I find all this quite absurd...

Who is going to use their watch to send messages or what pictures when their phones is in their pocket?

It would take 3 times longer to do all those tasks on the watch than on the phone.

Really it is absurd.

IMO a smartwatch all it should do is receive notifications so one can easily see them without reaching for the phone.

Nothing more is really needed.

Amen. I do like being able to send a text via voice when driving though. Apple tried to add functions that are very gimmicky.

Specs mean nothing. It is plenty fast and the battery last a day, which is currently what all android wear watches get. They used cheaper parts to keep the price low. I think that is smart for something they want to update yearly

Kinda like being able to order a pizza with your Moto 360?

Nah I disagree. Would I want a modern SoC? Would I want a sapphire screen? Would I want more battery life? In exchange for another $100 the answer is a resounding yes. The old SoC's they used are right now a publicity nightmare. Battery life is getting trounced in the press as well, although if it deserves this is up for debate.

Is that a function of google now? If so, that is the ultimate feature android/android wear has. Google now is fantastic if you have ever used it.

Send your heartbeat..send an animated face. Those are just silly. I do think it will sell b.c it is apple, but a smart watch only needs to be a notification extension and have some health/fitness tracking.

A lot of those early battery reviews have been updated. Real world use people are getting a day with around 30%+ left. I would pay extra for better battery though. I have a pebble that I never have to worry about the battery.

That whole send smilies thing just smacked of marketing to teenage girls. I mean don't we have text messaging and emoji's now? Is the new thing having a hand drawn emoji sent now?

I think maybe they should have concentrated more on sending your HR to your doctor or your medical records.

Real world use is about 12 hours with the screen in dim mode all the time. Some are getting closer to 20 hours with the screen off. The thing is that ANYTHING that uses the screen causes the battery to fall way down to a ridiculous degree. Play around with the watch? Now you only have 3-4 hours. Driving and tilting your arm a lot? Now you only have 3-4 hours. Granted some of these can be fixed in software like the driving issue, but google seems like they put out a project then kind of abandon it for the next project.

In what aspect? They are doing the software. The hardware faults are on the manufactures. I don't see what they abandoned. There have been updates.

Android Wear IMO seems very unfinished, just like Google now seems at times, hangouts, google voice, etc. I'm not saying they aren't good products, even great products, but each has it's own shortcomings that make little sense to have.

Android wear is very much a beta product, it's not a bad thing but we just have to be realistic.

I can order a pizza with my phone or an app or online. Someone brought up something that was gimmicky and the first thing I thought of was speaking to your watch to order a pizza. Most sane people do it using a phone or though the website. But that's just me.

Well that was pretty cute, I did enjoy that aspect of it. However I can do all of that on my phone and the other person has to have an apple watch. As it is whilst I know people with iPhones only my mum insists on using iMessages. Everyone else uses what's app, handouts, BBM, or viber. The Apple watch will be even more niche. Still think I'm better off with an android/Samsung watch. At least I could use the phone I liked and wouldn't have to buy an iPhone just to be able to use the apple watch. Samsung's gear S looks pretty neat.

I agree with that. That is why I think apple went in a weird direction. The watch doesn't need its own apps outside of health and fitness trackers. Let it push notifications and focus less on these strange features/apps.

I know you're concerned a smart watch will be too large and masculine. I hope you realize that the Gear S is a huge smart watch with a 2" display, likely biggest out short of the Neptune Pine.

I agree with this. I think all the smart watches have some gimmicky features that try to entice you to spend your money. Truth is, I just don't see the value. A watch is considered jewelry and a fashion statement. I'm not looking to Moto or Apple for my fashion and clothing needs. It goes back to using the right tool for the job. In this case, the iPhone/iPad is perfect.

Agreed, Apple actually took a page out of Samsung's playbook and went a bit gimmicky on some of the functionality.

That being said, I must fit into the small niche that those particular gimmicks are targeting but hate to admit it but my wife and I would probably use the hell out it. We are in touch so much throughout the day that we've almost developed our own type of shorthand communication--using the quick draw function would come in very handy for us I'd imagine.

I am ! Which is why I haven't committed to buying one yet. I don't mind if it's big I just want to look pretty.

This is pretty big on my wrist but I don't mind it.

I think the Digital Touch communication is pretty neat actually. The way they demoed it seemed pretty gimmicky, I'll give you that.....but quick simple communication is not a bad idea via a watch. I like the idea of being able to quickly communicate with my wife without having to pull out the phone.

I'm also really looking forward to annoying the hell out of people by repeatedly tapping on my watch to send that pulse over and over and over.....lol

The Apple Watch does all the notification stuff as well. Plus it's got the health/fitness tracking and (my number 1 ask) Apple Pay.

Honestly, I think they did a GREAT job on a day 1 product. Looking for a thinner design in the future, GPS capabilities and better battery life. Waterproofing would be welcome as well.

Overall though, I'm really excited about the Apple Watch. They put a ton of thought into the iUI and navigation of it.

Battery is going to be a casualty for a little while IMO. For some its a non starter, for others (like me) I'd never wear my watch in bed anyhow so I don't mind charging up overnight.

$350 and up is pretty damn expensive for a pre-teen or teenager and having the watch also mean they have an iPhone, another big expenditure. My daughter is a pre-teen and my wife and I make a pretty comfortable living and I can tell you there's no way in hell she'll be getting an Apple watch.

I pretty much agree.

But there are a few other things that can compliment a smartphone too. Notifying when the phone is out of range is a nice one for me. And playing a sound and/or flashing the LED of phone to find it could be handy too.

My phone is a Note that has the notify feature when the stylus is out of range. I never used it--wasn't even sure it worked. But it alerted me a couple weeks ago right when existing a movie theater. Went back to my seat and retrieved the stylus.

When X-Mas time comes this year or next (for Apple Watch) and she is looking up at you with those innocent eyes, let's have this convo again. :)
