You do know that any Android phone with an LED light has the option to make an LED light or tone specific to a personal contact? Additionally, I'm not sure what phones you used, but as of 4.3, rich notifications have been incorporated into Android, as they are now into iOS.

One, this is not as good of a solution as banners, as you quickly run out of colors and many times I can't even make out the color in bright daylight.

Two, how does the light show me if the message sent is regular communication or one that requires immediate response sent back?

Three, if I am going to add another layer of service to poll my device for notifications, I will take the banners over led light.

I'm not a big fan of the LED either. Banners is OK but i just think lock screen notifications are a better way to go. I am trying that app link you posted and its alright, but once the banner goes away you have to access it elsewhere anyways so its only good if you are looking at your phone. You can leave it til dismissed but then its in the way. Dont like that.

LS notifications stay till you dismiss them and gives you more than one and they aren't in the way.

Possibly has to do with a free limitation.

The lock screen app I use has this built in (same Dev) and I can swipe them to remove or they go away after a couple of seconds. I can disable them too if i want to.

Looks like an HTC One - but without all the things I didn't like about it (thickness, big bezels, no iOS).

This would be unreal.....though better guess is a 4.7" display in the 400+ ppi range. 5" 500+ ppi displays are JUST now hitting mass production.

LG can do these things a bit faster because they make their own displays. So it makes sense their phone (the G3) is the first with a 500+ ppi display.

Mostly agree - though I don't think its too far fetched to say we'll see a 13 mp shooter with better optics in the larger body. I also think 6mm is thinner than they will go - 6.5 - 7mm is more likely.

Also lower res display, likely no IR blaster and the bezels will probably be a tad bit bigger at least at the top and bottom....unless that story about merging sensors into the display was late and its already happened versus simply being a series of patents.

I think the speakers could happen - I'd be all for it, though its more likely not happening.

Internally I think we'll see a quad core A8 with an M8 co-processor, 2 GB RAM and the standard storage options.

I did find the design of the true tone flash (around the camera) quite interesting - though I don't know how practical that would be.

Don't forget that it might be a standard 1080P display. XCode said resizable but didn't mention anything about resolution.

Moto X's Active Display pulled me in hook, line and sinker. Not sure if I can do without it now!

The best part is that it's an actual app in the Play Store, so it's easily updateable.

But in a way iOS lock screen is that and you can view more than one notification.

There is a lockscreen app on Android called SlideLock that does both lockscreen and banners when the phone isnt locked so you can have both if you want them. You can disable whatever app you want as well.

Yep, I use slidelock and it's pretty awesome. Banners AND lockscreen notifications, and you can select exactly which ones you want, colors, swipe options, notifications, sounds, etc etc. You can also set it to wake the phone with the banner.

Both Active Display and Slidelock are good but Slidelock is twice the price for the pro versions of both. Not a huge deal. Im still using both since i havent had either very long. Ill keep the one that drains the battery the least. Nils and Lockscreen pro werent good on the battery.

It is nice that iOS is getting a notification widget and whatever other widget they are getting but there is no comparison to the widgets you can get on Android. There are a ton and many of them are very good but they have had them for about 7 years

iOS has a long way to go to catch up in that regard and are very late to the party.

IOS widgets have APIs that developers can use plus finally interapp communication.

Then there is the new extensions where you can actually bring the UI from one app, over to another.

That's pretty cool, and a bit deeper than simple inter-app communication.

another thing to see here, developers can directly plug into the photos app and add editing options directly into the photos and I don't think even Android has that.

Sorry but i just don't see the good in iOS lockscreen. I don't want all my private stuff splashed on the screen for everyone to see. I think having notification icons on the top bar is more functional as I can see all status at once.

I'm pretty sure you can turn off the private info so it just alerts you of new messages and missed calls etc without actually displaying who they're from or what they say. At least you used to be able to in iOS 6.

Yup, can select for each individual app whether you'd like notifications displayed on the lock screen or not.

Is that true? If you drag your app to the "App Info" from the app drawer, you can uncheck "Show Notifications". That should stop it.

It's interesting. That's the exact reason why I hate the banner notifications, precisely because it interrupts whatever full-screen app I'm in (usually a game so the banner is really distracting).

If you're in a full-screen app, wouldn't you hear the buzz/notification tone? Or wouldn't the notification light blink? I find that's enough to let me know I have a notification and if I deem it worth pausing my game for, I can pause, and pull down my notification to act on it or even switch to it. I don't think that's much different than on iOS, right (I mean, if I wanted to act or switch to it on iOS, I'd have to also pause whatever I'm doing)? Except the difference on Android is I don't get an obtrusive interruption.

I'm 100% with you on lock screen notifications, though. It's nice that Android has third party apps that can add that feature. I really hope Motorola expands on the Active Display feature in their next Moto X.

How would you know if it's important enough to check if no part of the notification was visible such as who it's from or what the 1st few words are to give you an idea of what it's about?

I can do that from my gallery on Nexus 5 so yes it does.

My S4 just gives the option to open the photo in a desired 3rd party photo editing app similar to the "open with" option. How do I enable this feature on my S4? I would like to be able to open an image in the stock photo app and selecting which 3rd party photo editing app options I want to see in the stock photo app? I think I saw them do this in the WWDC Keynote. They never had to leave the stock photo editing app.

He is wrong. I can't do that on my Nexus 4.

Yup, can select for each individual app whether you'd like notifications displayed on the lock screen or not.

That's the beauty of Android isn't it. The lockscreen is replaceable unlike ios. There are plenty of lockscreen replacements in Playstore to satisfy every fancy.

For me I just want a basic lockscreen. Like I say the icons on the notification bar is enough to tell me what kind of notifications are pending. If I want details just pull down the notification.

Maybe ios if ios shows icons like android there's no need for complicated lockscreen which essentially just duplicate the info inside the notification.

btw: if you turn off sms not to show on ios lockscreen then you lose all notification for this since there is no way you will know you have sms notification without pulling down the shade. Android notification icons on top bar is still more functional imo.

You are too naive to think Apple or any apps that you used on your idevices don't collect your info. This is the risk everyone takes when they go online.

Like I say I just don't like my private sms or IMs to show on lockscreen.

Just use the share option. If you have photo editor apps that registered open image files intent, these will show up in the share list.

But Apple's implementation is better and more open in a sense.

Can we all admit that at least? Please?

Sooooo iOS 8 anyone?

Complicated lockscreen? Really? I thought iOS was too simple and boring?

Do you constantly have strangers looking over your shoulder anytime you view your lockscreen? Do you pass your phone around so people have an opportunity to view your lockscreen?

What was your point in telling Apple and 3rd party apps collect info? I never said I was paranoid about my privacy. You did. Which is why I mentioned you using Google that collects everything about you.

I never pay attention to the icons on the status bar when using my Android devices. It just starts getting cluttered and becomes useless. I prefer the banners which let me immediately know if I need to view and respond.

I also like to get alerts such as bad weather conditions, sports scores, etc. on my lockscreen. Are those types or alerts TMI for the lockscreen?
