I have been on android for a number of years now, had the htc desire, galaxy s2, galaxy s3 , htc one , note 3 and now I'm on the nexus 5. I had the iPhone , iPhone 3G and iPhone 4. But got really bored of iOS and it's lack of features. This latest update though is probably gonna make me switch, only if they make a 4.7 inch phone or bigger. They have addressed most if not all the issues I had with iOS , and the way it interacts with osx now is probably gonna make me buy a mac.

The improvements are great, although I hope they get rid or at least make animations when opening apps faster, because it actually gives iOS the feeling that it's slower than android at the moment (IOS 7).

My question though is, I have a nexus 5 at the moment and part of the screen is always taken up by the software buttons at the bottom. Due to the software buttons on the screen, what is the actual screen size that is usable on the nexus 5? ( apart from videos and when apps can use immersive mode)? I'm asking because I'm wondering if I will actually notice a difference in website screen real estate if I was to go back to 4.7 inches .

If it's anything like the M8 you have 4.5" for most things.

Trust me you will, even with the jump from the Iphone 4s and the Iphone 5 you can feel it  but if it will be a problem is up to you but its not huge downgrade in screen like im experience right now lol from Note 3 to Iphone 5s.

Yea I went from note 3 to nexus 5 and the difference was huge, although in many ways it was better because it was easier the handle (massively more easy to handle). Don't think I could have done what you did though lol

Well after watching this, I'm sold on iOS8. It's great.

LOL, seems great.

The buttons for most things get hidden i find but when they arent.....i dont know. The screen is 4.95" so with the buttons on the screen id say 4.6-4.7"?

I ask questions with Google now all the time but i dont use the OK Google saying. I think its lame to say. I think we should be able to change it, but anyways, i just touch the mic button instead.

lol I feel you about the saying. But for a lot of people tapping on screen or using a button is an extra step that they forget about and then tend not use. At least thats what I see. On the Moto X it's nice to be able to control the whole phone without having to use a button or tap on screen.

I want to know if my jailbreak 3GS can be upgrade to iOS 6 or 7... I would like to know how to and if there is any technicalities

I think the 3GS latest version is like 6.1.4 or something like that.

Wow. Surprise! Good for ipad2 owners!

It really wasn't
If I products are supported for 3 years then iOS 8 is the last release for the A5 products. In fact the release of iOS 8 on iPad 2 would have been surprising if it DIDNT happen.

The only reason that I thought that it wasn't getting it is because prior to WWDC, the said it would not be getting IOS8. I still haven't watched the Keynote, so it was a surprise to me when you said the iPad 2 was. I think that is great for those owners with older devices to be able to get it. I have an iPod 4th gen that can't even get iOS7, so I know what it is like to get left behind.

Same here! But I'm not surprised. The iPod touch 4 is a massive POS.

Your loss.

Agreed.

No arguements here. I used it primarily to workout with (music and Nike+ run) and to sync with my Nike+ Fuelband. Other than that, I didn't use it, because it lagged on everything or would force close in the middle of an app.

From reviewing many website in regards to iOS 8 and Yosemite, you may not be happy with switching to Apple ecosystems. Just about everything Apple is bringing forth is already available for Android systems. I personally do not have Android, but there are too many sites that references the same theme that all this functionality is already there for Android users.

Have you thoroughly checked that your existing setup and devices are enabled to do what Apple is bringing this fall?

You need to watch the keynote again.

 The biggest reason to be able to switch back and forth now between various platforms (iOS, Android and WP) is because they are all within parity with regards to feature sets. I switched to Android in 2012 because of the capabilities Android provided. That gap is now closed with iOS8/Yosemite and as such I am comfortable using iOS again.

While I realize the closed ecosystem is still there, I am lucky enough to still have Apple products (iMac, iPads and ATV's) so I can reintegrate into that system if I so desire. Even without that though, iOS8 provides the features Android users have grown accustomed to.

I'm really interested in what the iWatch will be able to add to the table. Yet another product line to probably integrate with the phones. iOS introduced touchless voice control (plugged in), I'm wondering if the watches will have an always listening chip (similar to the Moto X) for Siri.

As the poster suggestion for me to watch the keynote again, I have already seen it the first time. Complete. So I don't know what he's trying to imply. I don't see anything different from what everyone else is stating about Android already been there done that. lol

So from your post, seems that Android is now first and Apple following behind with quite a large gap. If your on Android and happy, then it's best to stay on that platform. If your happy with iOS and willing to wait for quite sometime for feature parity, then stay with iOS. I'm on iOS but I'm willing to accept that we are now way behind with Android and Apple has clearly lost it's lead. Too bad, but it's still functional for the most part and for the majority of users until they discover how Android has clearly leapfrogged Apple.

Doubtful. Too many mics required for active listening on a watch. And battery drains, no matter how small, will significantly hamper a 200-300ma battery. I just don't see Apple doing this on an iWatch. Let the phone handle the heavy loads and the watch provide data.

I dont know why people keep saying that the gap have been closed with iOS and Android, im using ios8 from day 1 and well i know its no public release and whe still have things like icloud drive that whe cant use but other than the options that people with yosemite can take advantage and third party keyboards its still the same iOS.

Maybe they are saving more for the new Iphones and maybe they still have things to show us but i wouldnt expect much more for this release.

Anyway im not saying its bad thing, i quite like the little things and specially the widgets wich i always wanted they finally let devs take advantage of the notification center and maybe whe gonna get the same for control center, in the hidden settings people have found reference for it.

Serious, just in this house their is 5 iPads, 2 iPhones, 1 iPod touch. No one uses Siri, useless as tits on a bull

Never a more true statement

Your loss.

No, not really. I still stand by Google Now/Android based phones being a far better assistant. I run a Note 3 with Nova Launcher and it has 100% hands free listening for Google Now and battery life has not been impacted at all for me. I still get 1.5 days of good use from a single charge. Add in GN is 10x faster too.

I think both siri and Google now have there plus points and lack of plus points.

I think Google now is faster and a bit more intelligent in terms of learning what you want it to display with out any input from the user. But I also don't think its a true assistant like cortana or siri. The lack of ability to truly control your phone is a big bad point IMO. Even trying to play a song using Google now is hit and miss for me for some reason.

I think cortana has the greatest potential of them all at the moment. It seems to have all the plus points of siri. As well as the features of Google now in how it displays information in one place , as well as some other new innotive features like you can set a reminder to remind you to say something to who ever your speaking to I.e next time I'm speaking to my mum remind me to say I love you...then it promts you.

Like I said its great there is competition in every operating system right now... Win win for all of us
