Grey, and other colours, do not look durable to me. Brand new, they look like a finish that will wear off. Even if this were only a perception on my part I don’t want one for that reason. Silver. Only silver.

I'd prefer silver over space grey personally. Not that it looks bad but there are already enough dark grey/black devices around.

I'd also love to see the glowing logo come back on the laptops - that was such a nice touch. Going forward I hope they don't adopt the weird new 'cheesegreater' look when they redesign any of their other machines though.

It can wear off, especially around the sharper edges like for ports.
any pics? I haven't had any issues with my 2016 space grey 15".
The anodizing finish is basically stained into the raw aluminum. It doesn't just chip like normal paint its more like what happens with a stain into wood.

Here is a pic from my 2016 13" non Touch Bar. Sorry I was having difficulty getting it to show properly in an image. I'm a student so it does get beat up a bit, but this edge is not entirely dents. The edges inside the case do not come to quite as sharp a point, and I don't see any issues there. As a machinist I can say anecdotally that sharp points often create this issue with anodization. I see it a lot in manufactured goods. Personally I would still pick the space grey but it may hurt resale value later on.

yea that's not good. what bag are you sliding this into? id only imagine those edgings are wearing from in and out of a bag or hitting it on something?

I have an incase soft slip that I put it in before it goes into my bag. If it was me being rough with it I'd assume that there would be the same marks on the bottom outside of the laptop but there are none. I do not believe I am coordinated enough to only be denting the monitor lid hahah. There are a couple dents that I put it myself, but oddly enough the space grey held intact. Still think space grey even with minor defects looks better than the silver.

I know this debate has been had over the years since Apple introduced Space gray into the line up, but I was curious where folks are at now for your MBP color preference?

Since space gray was introduced I have gone with that color, but more and more I am digging the silver design with it's classic look and contrast. Maybe I just wanting a change, but I am thinking of switching to silver for my 2019 purchase?

Where do you stand ?

Experience has shown that silver is the best for long term durability. SG does look sick but finish doesn't hold up as well as silver. I'm talking about 5+ years of ownership. My 2012 rmbp 15" still looks pristine w/ very minimal dents and nicks. You'd be very surprised to see how pristine it looks after all these years. Anodized coating will thin out around the sharp edges first b/c the coating is the thinnest on those areas and areas subject to constant abrasions like the ports.

I have SG but always have liked the classic look of silver to me it looks ultra clean, and professional. seems here where I am many do have the 2019s in silver for some reason or about half/half...

Space Grey seems to be a pretty variable colour even amongst apple products, much less 3rd parties, whereas the silver colour I think is/was much more uniform.

Having said that, I definitely prefer space grey, even with the variations.

We have two 13 pro's at home, one space grey, another silver and I honestly couldn't pick one if you paid me to, both colours look equally nice to my eyes, it would be a coin toss if I had to choose one over the other. :)

Silver has a timeless appeal all it's own. It's the classic professional Apple laptop colour going all the way back to the PowerBook G4 released in early 2001. Me, I'll always take silver.

Space Grey is nice for an iPhone though.

I went with space grey. Was thinking silver because of that classic mac look, but caved in to peer pressure. Seems like everyone with the newer models are rocking the space gray

I have both at home - space gray for the last 4 years. Both have dents (I am using this tool, not only keeping in the protective case) but other then that both are in a perfect shape. No dis-coloration, visible scratches that would reveal raw material, nothing. I don't get all the ranting about better silver longevity. You will replace your laptop due to dead battery before you'll notice a defect.

After years of having silver Macbook Pros, it was a nice change to pick up a Space Grey 2018 15" MBP back in December. My 2017 12" MacBook is also Space Grey.

I am thinking along that line as well. Really I could go for a black polycarbonate like the old blackjacks but those days are done I guess... and a space gray book (not sure of the line or size yet but possibly a MacBook since the pro has no optical or extra ports any more either and I don't need its computing power really) is probably on my list down the road a bit.

meanwhile there are people on here going through 5 macbook pros because it makes a weird noise when they hit it with their finger at one specific spot. Or ssd noise when you put your ear right up on the keyboard. Some people are way too touchy with things but most arent.

The silver color looks like every other Apple laptop since the aluminum models were introduced and for that they look pretty meh to me. I'm not sure if people are drawn to the space grey because they're "different" or because it's a more popular color?

My wife's heavily traveled '16 model does show some raw aluminum dings - since the color doesn't go all they way through the material but she doesn't care.

I'd suspect the natural / silver colored one to look better over time, but you're still up to people's personal preferences if you sell it.

A lot of the publicity and test units of these models sent out are space grey, so I when I actually see the silver models they stand out and do look quite smart. The higher contrast between the black KB and silver chassis looks cleaner as well IMO.
