I'm not happy about this TRIM business. I can grasp the basics of it, and I'm apprehensive of the final outcome.

+1

Apple should come to their senses and support 3rd party SSDs in their upcoming release of OS X (10.11) and stop frustrating OS X users with it's more and more Apple welded OS that only uses Apple ($) welded hardware!

Cheers

- There are no issues with the 850 EVO.
What do you mean your machines don't recognize it? Does it not appear at all in Disk Utility?

If not, install in another enclosure. Any change?
If not, install internally in one of your machines. Any change?

If not, you likely have a bad SSD.

Tnx to your suggestions i found out the problem - the SSD didn't appear in Disk Utility while i was using the USB3 enclosure, then i switched to different enclosure (USB2) it appear on my Macs and i could format it. After i switched back to the USB3 enclosure hoping it will work, but again the same problem... so now i know that somehow this box having problem with SSD inside...

UPDATE :

After trying to fix my problem the last few days, and just before ordering ThunderBolt enclosure bay, i decided to replace the the Samsung 850 EVO with new one - Samsung 850 PRO, and guess what - the new SSD working with my USB3 enclosure, so after all the problem was defected SSD (or specific problem with Samsung EVO and the enclosure im using)...

I know many people don't having problems with the EVO series, but looks like I’m not one of them…

Now i wish i could have the same speed as the internal SSD, coz im sure the newer one can run faster internally with Data Doubler (or with ThunderBolt enclosure):

Samsung 830 Series 512GB (internal) - 389 Write \ 481 Read
Samsung 850 Pro 512GB (USB3 enclosure) - 278 Write \ 306 Read

PS - Is it normal speed for SSD inside USB3 enclosure ? or there is faster USB3 option ?

hello,
Thank you to help me.
I must update my MBP Mid 2009 17" and I hesitate between 3 models (5OOGB):
Crucial MX100, MX200, Samsung 850 EVO.

I like 512GB of MX100 but the MX200 have Low power consumption, maximum reading usage of only 2.51 watts compared to 4.16 watts.

Why not get the Crucial BX100? It has lower power consumption than any of the other drive you listed.

Any suggestions for the mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro (2.53/4GB RAM)? My son was just given this computer by my sister (can you believe it has been boxed up for the last 2.5 years and is still like new!!!) and I went to a computer store and told them which computer we have; the sales assistant sold us the Kingston SSDNow V300, which unfortunately does not run at the negotiated link speed of 3Gbps, only 1.5Gbps (apparently a well-known issue).

I have a family member who has offered a used Samsung 830 256GB SSD, or should I look elsewhere? I have had a crucial SSD in my 15" MacBook Pro in the past (which I have since given to my mum), and had no issues. I would be looking to purchase a 256GB SSD, and I will be adding RAM this week (just waiting for it to arrive).

Cheers

Hi,

I have a few SSD related happenings and I would like to get some opinions if you all would be so kind to offer yours.

I have a Mac Mini 2012. I don't really need the performance upgrade, but the stock mechanical HDD has been letting out quite audible clicks since it has been purchased, and it may just be my imagination but it seems a bit more frequent lately. I want to believe that the noise is operational since it has been happening for the amount of time I have had it, but my instincts tell me to start looking for a SSD soon in order to have more of a well formed idea if I need to quickly make a purchase sometime in the near future.

I am mainly deciding between the Crucial BX100, Kingston Digital V300, and the Samsung 850 EVO. I would also include the Crucial MX200, but it doesn't seem to be available in a 120GB configuration (through Amazon where I will be purchasing) and that is all of the space I need internally. This is purely for speed, and not storage - I am currently using a 500GB mechanical drive but this is because it is what the unit came with of course, and I don't actually need the storage.

It is also worth noting that I own a Crucial M4 (256GB) from "back in the day" that is currently in my laptop. I don't use my laptop that much anymore, and have just been considering borrowing that drive to install into my Mini. I have poked around online and of course have looked at read/write speeds on paper, but I am mainly looking for experiences to be reported in order to help me out, if any would be so kind.

TL;DR - I realize that newer drives are statistically faster on paper, but does anyone that has been using SSDs since they had started becoming more mainstream believe it would be worth it for me to just use my trusty ol' M4 from my notebook in my desktop, or better just to invest $50-$60 in a newer SSD in terms of real world speed differences? I mainly do heavy Photoshop work, have a good 3-5 programs running at once, scripts etc running in the background, and other typical usage.

I realize most would probably read the first line of the second paragraph and post "SAMSUNGG!!! AHHHasdmaismxaio" but I would really appreciate any feedback at all, and especially appreciate anyone that takes the time to read the full post. Thanks everyone.

Here is a chart comparing the M4 to the new EVO. As you can see, in many of the tests, they are pretty close. My thought is short of sitting there with a stopwatch, you would have a hard time telling the difference in day to day usage. I would just pop the M4 in there and run with it.

Sounds good, thanks a lot for your reply.

Hi,

I want to upgrade the following:
(1-Mine)
MBP 7,1 13-inch, Mid 2010
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 @ 1066mhz
250 GB SATA HD

(2-Fiancee)
MBP 5,5 13-inch, Mid 2009
2.26 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB 1067 Mhz DDR3 @ 1066mhz
160 GB SATA HD

I know the MBP 7,1 can be upgraded to a 16gb RAM according to OWC, and the MBP 5,5 max is 8gb RAM.

I would like some suggestions on the SSD anyone can suggest for the MBP's I have listed.

Thank you!

(P.S. Will this work?: 960GB Crucial M500 2.5" SATA III Solid State Drive SSD (CT960M500SSD1).

I have just upgraded my sons mid-2009 13" last night (2.53 GHz model). Do not use the Kingston SSDNow V300 SSD's - they will run at the negotiated link speed of 1.5Gbps instead of 3Gbps. I ended up installing the Samsung 850 PRO which runs at the negotiated link speed of 3Gbps - the Samsung 830 PRO I tested also ran at 3Gbps.

In regards to RAM for the 2009, I installed the Crucial 8GB kit @ 1333MHz, and it runs perfectly. The Corsair 8GB 1333MHz kit (MAC certified) will also run fine.

If you want to save money in regards to a RAM upgrade for your fiancé, you could install your RAM into her MacBook and just upgrade your own RAM.

I honestly could not believe the difference in performance with the upgrades.

Hi guys, whats the lastest SSD to go for?

I had a Crucial M4 512gb in my Late 2011 MBP and it has failed 1 month outside the 3 yr warranty period. So need a new asap but not sure what brand or one to go with? Want at least 512gb or 1TB. Thanks

Just getting back to that TRIM thing, is not having TRIM going to create a big problem in the future if you've installed a 3rd party SSD? I installed the Samsung EVO 850 and apparently it has some built-in garbage collection, but Samsung can't release any apps to clean up the drive as Apple won't give them the source codes to do so, or something along those lines.

Hope im not in wrong section,I installed a Samsung Evo 512 Pro, CCC from my old drive,I get 30 seconds of grey screen then the Apple logo which then boots rapidly, Anyone comment regarding the 30 second blank please.

Did you go into System Prefs in the Startup Disk pane and select the new drive as the boot drive? If you don't do that, the system will search around for alternate boot devices and cause a delay.

What about El Capitan? I just got the 850 evo 500gb brand new, but just delivered my mbp to apple care for a repair..now when i get it back, i'll have received an optibay and will wanna take advantage of the best way to start out the ssd adventure..dunno jack about trim, but i read that it's now supported in el capitan - how does that relate to the samsung/apple trim issues on the evo and the garbage collection incident, and what does a simple joe like me need to do to get this baby firing from all cylendars ?

TRIM is good to have and El Capitan has made it easier then ever to enable.

That said, TRIM or the absence of TRIM had nothing to do with the EVO issues. That was a design/firmware issue with those drives that Samsung has hopefully got ironed out with their latest firmware updates to the drives.

Very helpful, Can anyone point me to a new post regarding settings etc when upgrading to a n 850 pro please.
What settings do you mean? Just install the drive and clone over your old drive then set it as the startup disk and you are all set. Optionally, enable TRIM if you like.

Hi Weaselboy, As a newbee I'm on a steep learning curve and although it worked i did wonder what other maybe minor issues i might need to look at, Sleep for instance,Had heard it can end up with a wiped drive, I saw a reference to suggest trim is not an issue in Yosemite,And something called garbage looks after the ssd, Im working await at it tho and can see astonishing read/write numbers with the pro in my A1286.
