Cool guys, thank you both Weaselboy and JTToft. I just got back from the Apple store and wasn't too impressed in the new computer.

JTToft, is this the Crucial MX300 you are talking about? https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-MX300-750GB-Internal-Solid/dp/B01IAGSD68?th=1

Also would you recommend RAM from OWC or just buy Crucial also from amazon like this https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-PC3-...=8-1&keywords=Crucial+8GB+1067+DDR3+PC3-8500? Thanks!
- You're welcome. Yes, that's the correct SSD. Take your pick between the sizes.

Crucial is a great brand also for RAM. Here are some at a lower price:

A few questions for those who have upgraded... I'm interested in upgrading my 2015 MBP 15" from the 512gb to the 1tb OWC.

Has anybody done this on their MBP of the same year? (mid-2015 15" MBP)

Why are they so damn expensive?

Is there a speed difference with the OWC drive? Faster/Slower?

Should I be concerned about the TRIM factor?

Where/when is a good place to buy?

Ahhhh really? For some reason I thought OWC was the only aftermarket solution for the 2015 MBP, but that's not the case eh? I apologize, looks like i need to do a little more research here!

My MBP is just 45 minutes away from finishing the restoration to my shiny new Samsung 850 PRO 1TB SSD....

Glory or disaster... Let's see.

I don't need to worry about TRIM anymore, do I?

Yes, you should enable TRIM. Just run the command below in Terminal to turn it on (assuming you are on Yosemite or newer).

Code:
sudo trimforce enable

I saw that Samsung 850 1tb M.2 out there, reasonably price too! Let us know how it goes, if you could please?

Wow. Just wow.

OK only initial first few minutes (it only took 10 minutes to finish, not 45min!).

But I enabled TRIM and rebooted.

It went from start to desktop in 35 seconds. Before the SSD, it took FIVE MINUTES.

OH PRAISE THE LORD. Let's test a few things out.

It´s alright! Third party companies(Sandisk,Samsung & WD) started to sell PCI SSD m2 drives end of 2015- beginning of this year, hopefully you will be find a 1TB PCI SSD m2 at a decent price!

For the sake of curiosity, how much is now in the US a 1TB SSD? I am still running the old 500MB mechanical drive in my 2011 MBPro (whose main board has been replaced after the failing video board issue affecting most of the late 2011 MBPros) and it is time to upgrade but here in Italy they still go for around 300 euros and it still is too much.

Also, I can see Crucial being cheaper than competition (Samsung especially), is it really worth spending the extra money to gain something in speed (if nothing in the real world)?

Grazie

Everything that I'm finding on iFixit is saying that the 2015 Macbook Pro 15" and 13" are non-standard M.2 size SSD drives and looking at the pictures, it does look like the slot/pins on a standard M.2 are more "IIIIII II" style pins as opposed to to the "IIIII IIIII" style pins on the Macbooks. What a bummer.

It's the Apple SSD connector. They've been using that for 4-5 years.

I see some places make these adapters: m.2 to the proprietary apple SSD connector, any ideas of these really work?

http://www.ssd-for-mac.com/blog/files/compatible-m2-ssd-macbook.php

- All those third party PCIe M.2 drives are not compatible. Apple's SSDs use a proprietary connector. The only known third party option is the OWC Aura.

Some have tried those adaptors you linked. It's not gone over well for them.

My dad, bought a Samsung PCI m2 drive for the 13" MBA(2014 edition) and it worked without any problems.

I currently have an early 2011 MBP and I replaced the superdrive with a caddy and a 256GB Samsung 840 PRO nearly 3 years ago.
Recently I have had problems copying files from the drive getting the dreaded error 36.
I've run various tests on the drive, DriveDX suggests data transfer errors, so I removed and reseated the connector just incase, but that made no difference.
I've finally managed to recover all of my data from it now and want to replace it as I've lost all faith and trust in it.

What would be the best drive to get these days? I'd be after 256gb again or maybe 512 depending on cost.

As its mainly for MP3 storage would I be better off with a 7200rpm drive or another SSD?
My main drive is an SSD too, so all of my programs etc are run from that for speed, the 2nd drive is strictly for data.

Bought Sandisk Ultra II 960gb SSD(for $200 during last years black friday at Amazon.co.uk) for my 15" MBP and it still works perfectly!

i would recommend it (The Ultra II) or the Sandisk Extreme Pro as SSD.

I should hope it does still work after less than a year!
I'm currently looking at the Samsung 850

Can anyone recommend the best way to transfer data over to a new SSD for a late 2013 rMBP?

I want to use CCC but I don't have an enclosure for the replacement SSD so I am thinking the process should be something along the lines of:
1) CCC to USB HDD
2) boot from HDD to check it works
3) replace the SSDs
4) CCC from USB HDD to new SSD

Does anyone have a better way?
