I'm all set. Easy as pie. I partitioned off 125 for windows. I"m only using a very small % of my TB as it is. This gives me some growing room. Thanks for everyone's help.,

Great to hear! I forget if you have previous Windows experience or not. It's a different animal. Although Windows7 is the best Windows yet, when traveling I find I have to futz with it to get connected to hotel networks. The MacOS is better and overall I prefer to do things within OSX. If you are a Windows newbie, be sure to run a good utility suite. I'm using TuneUp Utility. For bugs, Microsoft Essentials appears to be a decent anti-virus program.

Rolling in the weekend beta, unbelievable performance on max setting! The game looks amazing.

Yeah well, Friday night I heard the queue was 5000, on Saturday when I tried to log in it was 600. I got other things to do except watch the queue count down... ;)

What mac do you have?
I have a 27" iMac i7 quad core 2.93. with 4G of RAM. Radeon 5750 with a gig of VRAM.

a couple of times they took down servers and only put up 2 or 3 and had everyone trying to log into them.. one time I tried to log into one of the only 2 servers up and my place in the queue was over 5000. 10 minutes later all the servers were back up.

Oh, hmm. Thanks for the info...

That gig of vram is the kicker I think. Anyways, glad to know it works well on a Mac/bootcamp. I haven't let go of my windows desktop yet. But I did repurpose it to be a games only machine.

fwiw. Swtor is amazing. Beta went very well.

I didn't get a chance to try it on my Macs but my Windows machine ran it well, if you're having performance issues keep in mind that the beta has debug software running in the background, you will see better performance when the game comes out.

taking into account all the debug software and stress test going on...

In bootcamp W7, playing on the preset high settings for the beta, I observed 39-65 fps on a mid 2011 27" at native res, 3.4 i7-2600, 12gb ram, 80gb ssd partition, 2 gbp gpu. There was absolutely zero stutter so I would not have been able to discriminate between 20fps and the 60fps. It was smooth and great looking.

At 19x10 res the fps were 45-85.

Game is relatively large unpacked for the mmo genre....estimate 35-50GB space.

I was able to get in on the weekend beta. Needless to say, the 2009 Mini is showing its age:

2009 Mac Mini 2.0 C2D
4GB
750GB 7200rpm
24" ACD

In bootcamp running winXP, I was able to get 9-15 fps with all settings low and resolution set to 1680x1050. bumping down to 1200x800 didn't help much.

I guess I'm going to be thinking about buying a new Mac.

Did anyone try the game on the Mac Mini with the discrete ATI (AMD) graphics?

Maybe the beta testers know...

This may have been asked previously--and if so, apologies.

I have a 2009 iMac (Week 51 as I recall). It's the 27" 2.8ghz quad-core i7 with the ATI Radeon 4850 (512MB of RAM). It has, at present, 4GB of RAM and an unholy amount of free space (brand new 2tb hard drive put in last month). I'll be playing SW:TOR from Win7 using Bootcamp.

For those of you who have played the beta (or, indeed, know of these things)--is my machine likely to be capable of performing "well?"

Info hugely appreciated!

New build coming 11/17

Hello testers! We are preparing to deploy a new build of the game!

This Thursday, 11/17, at 7:00AM CST (13:00 London, 14:00 Paris/Berlin), we will bring the servers down for maintenance. Then, at 10:00AM CST (16:00 London, 17:00 Paris/Berlin), the servers will become available again with a 20GB patch, which will contain the new build.

You do not need to uninstall your previous game installation, but we do recommend uninstalling in order to save space on your hard drive and to assist with any necessary troubleshooting.

Good news: characters from the last phase of testing will not be wiped and will carry over to the new build!

Thank you all for your participation in the test!

I can say that this game is all about the CPU really. I was playing on my desktop: core 2 duo 3,3 GHz and 460 gtx 1gb overclocked and got around 30-40 fps(100 indoors). So you really need a good processor rather than graphics card.

Keep in mind they have debug programs running in the background which take up CPU resources, it should be a lot less intensive when it launches.

I did a beta weekend with basically the same config (8GB RAM instead of 4) and the game played pretty well in bootcamp. I was getting around 30 FPS on med to high settings at native resolution which isn't too shabby. Hope this helps.

Next build is likely the release candidate. I have the 2011 27" iMac with a 6970M and it ran great at native resolution with everything maxed, hovering in the low 40s for my framerate. I'm hoping the new build has even better performance.

I got into full testing program, during the beta weekend though I did not queue once, just straight on everytime. Only time I wasn't able to play was when the servers were down.

pre ordered the digital deluxe version for my brother but I dont like the idea of paying monthly for a game and having to be online online and finding stranger to complete tasks.. it makes the game last so much longer but Im sure it will be worth it.

Since the NDA is lifted, here's the game running on a 2011 27" iMac with the i5 processor and 1 GB Radeon 6970M GPU:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KYdGYLS-WM

That's at 2560x1440 resolution. I set FRAPS to record at half resolution (720p).

I didn't record any movies... but here is a screenshot playing with my Wineskin port last weekend... you can see from SMCFanControl it was running very hot :) Only running 1920x1200 since thats all my 17"er does :)

kicked it out of full fullscreen for a moment to grab a shot right before the servers went down.

Can i use an external video card?

I have a Macbook Pro 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 duo and i was wondering if i would be able to play Star Wars: The Old Republic by using an external video card? If so does anyone have any suggestions on which one i would want to use?

The SWTOR NDA is lifted so I can finally talk, although you probably won't like what I have to say, so I suggest you disregard my critiques, buy the game and give it a shot. I started working on a review, but I'm not sure if and how I want to publish it. At this point, I am undecided on continuing the game into retail.

The short and sweet version:

Pluses
*Great Story set in the Star Wars universe.
*Personal Class Story and experience.
*Individualized Cinematics.
*No Screen Loads Moving Into Instanced Space.
*Incredibly Solo Friendly.
*Easy to Coast through Game (at lower levels. I got to L20. They kept reloading the client and wiping characters during beta.)
*Handles Death and Group Wipes Well.
*Offers Moral Choices.
*Flash Points are the most fun I had within the game.
*Some planets are larger than I expected, the equivalent of two, maybe three WoW zones.

Minuses
*Some will say it's TOO easy.
*Starter zones seem flat and static (you may not feel this way). In some ways most of the game seemed flat except for the Flash Points. The Sith Flash Point was the most fun I had in the game.
*First major Republic Planets (Coruscant, and Taris) are heavily developed and short on wilderness. If you like playing in the "undercity" you'll love Coruscant. Taris is a destroyed version of Coruscant. I really really disliked Coruscant for questing.

Observations
*More fun to play Sith.
*Early Sith planets are more enjoyable than Jedi planets.
*I usually like playing good guys, but in SWTOR it was more fun to be BAD! :p

Summary
I'll suggest these are my feelings which may not match up with yours. A lot of work has gone into this game and it shows, but this Star Wars Universe did not grab me as a place to hang out long term. Recently I went back to WoW and ran a character through the Night Elf starter zone and got better vibes there, but I'm done with WoW as a serious past time. And in case anyone is thinking, I'm not looking for WoW in space. ;) My guess is that part of the special feelings I have for WoW are based on it being my first fantasy MMORPG. Possibly, when I think of SWTOR I'm expecting an epic environment and the lower levels (L20 and lower) just don't feel epic, instead, they feel pretty routine.

I don't believe there is such a thing. You got a link? :)

After looking into it more i dont think there are external video cards... its a shame, i think it would be an awesome idea but there is probably some reason why they dont exist. Oh well, time to sell my MBP and build a hackintosh!

I will also give my impressions:

- Overall the game is decent, but not worth all the hype IMO
- It looks to cartoonish for my taste
- If it wasn't set in Star Wars, this game would be a dud
- Nothing beats killing stuff with light sabers!
- Game runs smooth on my Mac using Parallels 7, which is awesome!
- Overall, will play until Guild Wars 2 releases
