The requirements are out... and a Macbook Air does meet the requirements if you install Windows on it. You will have to run at lower settings, but it will run.

Check the bottom of the page here for the listed system reqs..

So assume I want to run the game on optimal settings. And portability isn't an issue, I'm willing to go desktop or laptop. What would you suggest as my best option?

Again, I would like a system that has an SSD, runs Lion, and can play this game optimally, and of course, all preferably at a decent cost. Is the Hackintosh route worth exploring, or too much trouble?

Thanks again for the help and advice!

If your main aim is to play TOR buy or build a windows PC.

This game is not going to be released on mac.

Trying to get any mac with an SSD at a "decent cost" will be difficult, although it does depend on what you mean by decent cost?

If you want to play TOR on anything above medium settings you are looking at any of the current iMac range or the top spec 15" MBP and above.

If going with a laptop, compare the MacBookPro to PCs. I believe it is comparatively priced for equivalent performance.

With OpenGL support coming to the Hero Engine this October, it is my hope that Bioware will provide a Mac native client shortly thereafter. My body is ready.

in similar situation, so planning to wait until the game come out before buying a PC or iMAC 27" for it... may be revise spec by than

Beta weekends start next weekend, still no word on whether people in the EU will actually be included sadly.

I'll check that and report back. After the NDA is lifted, I'll definitely have something to say about this game...:eek::):(

can't believe you haven;t tried.. or haven't at least said.. if you tried with Wine and if there are problems or not :)

The real reason he's asking is because you could do the Mac community a tremendous service by letting folks know if it runs in a virtual environment. Running the game in Wine would take you a moment of your time, and said knowledge would be immensely helpful... and something exclusive that you could have on your MacRumors SWTOR guide that no one else on the internet has.

I mean, if you won't do it... I know I will if I ever get beta access. Speaking of which, the beta is going to be opened up to a lot more people over the coming weeks as we approach launch (likely November).

I just looked over this Mac Wine guide and it will take much more than a moment to install this game and try it out in Wine. It is time I'm not inclined to spend on such a huge game. It's huge. The best person to work on this would be someone with a vested interest, an interest in running the game in Wine which I have no interest in doing.

I know I'm not the only Mac user with beta access. As soon as anyone can verify the game is functional running under Wine, I'll be more than happy to add it myself to the SWTOR guide posted at MacRumors if I'm sent a PM OR I invite them to add it.

I hope you get beta access. Btw, do you run native Windows on your Mac? I'm curious what the success rate is of running Window games under Mac Wine is, if you are interested in talking about it.

I actually do have a Windows 7 partition running. I'm on the latest iMac with a 6970M 1GB video card and 12 GB of RAM. I've had no trouble running any game I've played.

because that Mac Wine guide is old and crap... No one wants all command line Wine usage on Macs. Wineskin is the way to go.

but still its not just point and click, it could take 30 minutes of your time to do a few tests, and if your not familiar with it at all, it could take a lot longer all depending on how fast you pick stuff up. If you aren't interested in making a Mac port... it probably won't be worth your time because there is basically no chance everything will work at default settings, meaning you need to play around with it.

I do not run any games on my Mac in Windows... but I probably only have like 30 games... some rather new, some very old.
portingteam.com has hundreds of game wrappers available for people to use... paulthetall.com has a ton as well. literally thousands of programs work fine with Wine. The newer or more complex the software (complex behind the scenes, not to the user) the less likely it is to work right away with some fixes to Wine.

Very often games take as little as a 5% hit in performance... to maybe much more (depends on the game). To me, and many others, even a 50% hit is preferable to having to run Windows. If you don't care about having to use Windows and just want to only game using it... thats your prerogative.

Release date finally announced!!

December 20th in the US and December 22nd in Europe. :D

Hmm, I thought it would come sooner. I wonder if this will ever get ported to Mac, if it comes it will most likely be ciderized but I don't care, I want to test the game.

Bit of an odd release date for a game, I am off to LA for two weeks on the 26th Dec, so I spent all year waiting on this and when it comes out I am away haha. At least I will have something good to come home to!

I am a fairly new Mac user. I intend on bootcamping windows to play SWTOR. I just had a couple of questions. First, is there any known performance issues when playing in bootcamp as compared to playing on a PC? My second question is more of a hardware issues. I have a 27" iMac i7 quad core 2.93. with 4G of RAM. I know my system meets specs, but my vid card is a Radeon HD 5750. Which I understand is a fairly low end card for this game. I guess I just need some reassurance that I will be able to utilize the 27" monitor and have better than average visuals, since I doubt I can upgrade an iMAC like I could with a PC. I'm also thinking of installing another 4 gigs of memory.
