Can you expand on that please ?

things based on Wine (like Wineskin and Crossover) are MUCH better for playing games or anything needing performance over any virtual machine... if/when you can get it working.. thats the part that is sometimes harder. Too many Star Wars loving geeks out here with the skills to patch Wine to get it working to think it won't ever work. Might not be working from day one, but it will eventually be working, and you can play right on Mac OS X without needing Windows at all.

Can't wait for this to come out. I've been waiting for a new MMO since they released the crappy combat balance patch in Star Wars Galaxies that ruined that game. Hopefully It supports Mac OSX though.

You been waiting a long time... I've heard nothing about OSX support.

In the MR SWTOR Guide I just added Starship link in Starship Section! Added Species Speculation Thread at SWTOR.com Forums. (pre-retail) in the Official Site Links section.

Well... I said i wouldn't play it until there was a free trial, so... I just received a gift from someone I know of a collectors edition pre-order... so I guess that is my free trial... so I guess I'll have to work on making sure Wine can run it when the early access starts.

Good luck!

In the MR SWTOR Guide just added SWTOR Companion Overview link in Companion section; added Advanced Class link under Class section; reorganized class section. In class section broke out Jedi Consular starting stats, gear, and advanced class tree.

My beta acceptance came today (Yippee) and I have been messing with installing the client all day. Initially I had a "Launcher Update" hang issue. This happens before the game starts downloading content before logging into the Launcher. Initially I had the client on an external drive. Moving it to my C drive corrected the issue. Content is not downloading. :)

Did you get into the beta for this month or the September Beta Test weekends? Congratulations man!

Well done mate If i said i was not insanely jealous i would be a massive liar!

I am just hoping the release date is not too far away.

Sweet mate, let us in on how it goes. I am in line, waiting for my own.

Me too! Not been in a Beta for quite some time. The last game i was waiting on was Stargate which ended up getting canned, and now at least Star Wars looks like its going to come out!

I've been using Macs since my family got its first computer (the Mac LC, oh so many ages ago), so apologies for any ignorance on display here. I've never had cause to read up on graphic cards and the like.

As a huge Star Wars fan and fan of BioWare, I've been anxiously anticipating TOR to the point of finally dipping into the Windows pool at home for that purpose and that purpose alone. That means Bootcamp, and since I only want to buy one copy of Windows, that means I have an install choice.

Option 1 is a 2009 24" iMac with a 2.66 GHz processor, 4GB of RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce 9400, and roughly 1 TB of memory.

Option 2 is a 2011 15" MacBook Pro, 2.2 GHz i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB, with roughly 750 GB of memory.

Will likely be going with Windows 7 with a 100-150GB partition. With the intention of the Windows partition to be solely to play Old Republic (and maybe availing myself of some additional gaming opportunities since it's there and all), which option would be better?

Personally, I'd go with option 2, because it looks like a beefier machine with the GPU. However, get some other opinions in before making your decision. I don't know much about the iMacs and still wonder what parts are desktop grade and what parts are notebook grade.

Option 2 by far....

That iMac has a very slow integrated mobile GPU, an nVidia 9400M with shared memory.

Your gaming experience will surely be better on that MacBook Pro, which has a current generation mobile GPU with it's own VRAM...

All right, thanks for the advice! I appreciate it. The MBP it is. Now back to waiting for the game. I don't want them to rush the game, but at the same time I'd like to be playing it yesterday. Gah.

Thanks again.

Thanks on all the congrats! :)

My impression is that the advantage of a retail digital download is possibly getting early access to download the client before the big rush to get into the game. However, depending on the type of connection you have I can see the hesitancy to select a digital download for retail especially if dealing with slow connections or data caps.

It's been a very interesting last couple of days. My ability to speak of this game is very limited. I learned that trying to download the largest game ever (for me, 25+GB) while traveling from hotel to hotel (at 150kb/sec) is not the way to do it. I got home and the process went much better, I was able to download the entire game on my home network in one night at 1340kb/sec. Now, I'm just waiting for access.

I had heard the d/l was massive. I would imagine at release the download will be compressed to a smaller size and not one massive 30GB ish download?

I have it ordered on physical copy and have early access code enabled. With most games I download its wise to do it at home and just do it at 12am and leave it running over night! Less frustration watching the download slowly progress.

I'm not sure on how "retail" will compare to "beta".

Buying a Mac, need to make sure I'm going to be able to play TOR

So I'm in the market for a new Mac. I originally had my eye on one of the new 13-inch Airs. But I'm also adamant about being able to play The Old Republic.

Is there anything preventing me from sticking with my original plan to get an Air and run Windows and TOR off an external drive?

Forgive my ignorance if this isn't how bootcamp works, I've never in my life had any desire to run any PC specific software until now.

If this WON'T work, what would you suggest is my best option at around $1500 for being a happy osx-user, with a ssd, an iSight camera (family lives in Hong Kong, so definitely a necessity) and being able to play TOR?

Thanks for your patience and help for this hardware newb.

As far as I'm aware Windows cannot be run off an external drive. I also believe that whilst the game is not out yet and the system requirements have not been announced a MacBook Air won't be able to run SW:TOR or at least not at an acceptable level.

Also depending on what software you're going to use you may not need the built in iSight camera and may be able to just use a regular external web cam. You're probably better off spending an additional $200 and getting a MacBook Pro if you need the portability or otherwise an iMac.

Edit: There are currently some good deals on both on the Apple online store's refurbished section.

The requirements are out... and a Macbook Air does meet the requirements if you install Windows on it. You will have to run at lower settings, but it will run.

Check the bottom of the page here for the listed system reqs..
