Both have nice beaches. In DG you had to worry about sharks. When I was there, I had just spent a month at Subic Bay (14 degrees North), had the best tan of my life and thought I knew what Sun was... not until I was 7 degrees South of the equator. ;)
I wish I got to spend time in DG but I didn't fly bombers. Subic Bay is the Philippines right?

This looks like a fun thread.

Favorite vacations Ngorogoro Crater in Tanzania is fantastic, I have a picture I took blown up on the wall in my office. Komodo Island in 2016 was great and Totality from the Cruise ship was just remarkable as the eclipse moved across the sea. Diving in Komodo is fun, though when one of the dragons decided to come swimming with us divers it was a little more exciting then I like. I've loved both trips to Egypt, I'm just not sure at this time its somewhere I would suggest people go just not sure its as safe as I like a place to be before I suggest people visit. Ankhor Wat (which I probably really misspelled) is a spectacular ruin. As many times as I have been to Paris, until this last year I had never been to the catacombs, the stacks of bones down there are really interesting, however I would really encourage you to buy the ticket before hand as the people with tickets line is really short and the people waiting to buy tickets at the entrance is REALLY long. Just got back from Disney World for my wifes birthday, the actually start the halloween extravaganza on August now so we went down for the first one. I saw several had posted about seeing Rushmore and Sitting Bull, was wondering if those who had gone there had gone to the Black Hills National History Museum, its a really spectacular collection of dinosaurs, especially for such a small building. I'll post my travel map and some pics after I figure out how to do that.

I thought so. I never made it to the Philippines during my Korea tour but I hear it is a nice place to vacation.
We also had some deployments to Osan. That was fun. :)

In the Phillipines, my experience was mostly at the Cubi Point Naval Air Station, in the early 1980s time frame on frequent deployments covering the South China Sea. I was doing ELINT (electronic intelligence) at the time. The NAS is centered in a jungle on the shores of Subic Bay (used to be Subic Bay Naval Station).

A trip down memory lane...
Not really a vacation location, mostly work, but at times it was. :) Many trips into neighboring Olongapo, Philippines for food, and rattan furniture purchases, some cross country trips up to Clark Air Force Base (beautiful scenery), but Cubi Point had everything I needed, recreation, relaxation, an Officer Club, beach facilities, and a nice run through the jungle up the mountain,on a winding road, past the bat tree, to the Naval Hospital. Just remember to avoid the monkeys and the occasional python on the road. ;)

I have fond memories of that place. My wife on occasion would bring our two year old, hitch a ride on a C140 and come stay with me on a month long deployment. Here is the key to happiness, when I was deployed, my squadron job stayed on Guam. We usually flew every other day, so every other day was off, laying by the pool. :D

Did several double deployments, once after staying in the Phillipines, then there was Japan. The wife followed me to Atsugi, Japan. We absolutely loved Japan. Friendly people and nice sights. I took 30 days of leave there, rode the bullet train down to Marine Corps Naval Station, Iwakuni, and worked our way back, Himieji, Kyoto, Nara, Mt Fuji, etc. Some cherished memories, being young and in love. :)

I've been to Osan a few times while I was in Kusan during my first assignment out of training. I liked Korea but it was busy.

It sounds like you were busy in Cubi Point. The approach in the picture looks like it could be challenging with the mountains. Do you recall the missed approach procedure?

That sounds fun until you mentioned pythons.

I did time in Japan after WIC in Misawa. Sadly I wasn't there long so I didn't get to do many of the fun things it sounds like you did. Between Japan and Korea I enjoyed both places and would go back with no regrets just don't tell my wife who is looking at where she wants to go next!

As I recall, missed approach landing to the East involved a turn and/or a minimum climb rate due to high terrain. :) I can’t imagine trying to commute from the orient back to the States for pilot work, so hopefully your spouse takes that into consideration for her next tour.

That's what I figured. I've flown into places in the C-40 that had mountains but nothing that looked as challenging as that. I still think one of the hardest approaches is the "River Visual" approach at DCA's runway 19.

I agree luckily she wants to go to Alabama for PME or San Antonio next. If I ever got hired by FedEx they have an HKG domicile which wouldn't be terrible except for it's hard to get hired at FedEx. UPS doesn't have any domiciles out of the US like FedEx but I have an interview with them next week.

The River visual is a lot of fun after you get over your tepredation. :D

It is fun in the perverse sense of the word especially if you're PM but if you're PF not as much. I've had the C-40 which is a 737-700 business jet, in and out of a few smaller airports when I was in that unit and there were some where the actual approach was much more challenging than the River Visual but what made the River Visual difficult is the restrictions and restricted airspace nearby.

Not to put a damper on your hiring plans, but a consideration...
Maybe cargo carriers have changed, but the way it used to be, a career of lost sleep can equate to premature aging and shortened life spans, depending on your genetics. Decades ago, ALPA did a study related to lost sleep, as related to international flight crews and the results were never released. Cargo carriers are at the severe end of that spectrum.

Thanks! I read on Quora where a pilot saw two twins with UPS and didn't know they were related let alone twins. I hear night flying is difficult but the LAS-JFK commute and lack of certainty about JetBlue's future are concerns. I had an offer with Spirit after I left Virgin America but didn't know how Spirit will make out in the future. The only thing that has me looking at cargo is my pops got furloughed after the TWA merger and 9/11 and ended up at FedEx and never got furloughed and makes great money. I have an application into Spirit again because LAS is their most junior domicile and at this point I don't need the money but I am doing it for fun. Thanks, I needed to hear what you said because I have been on the fence about UPS lately and that is a wake up call. I am at my fun job this weekend so I will update my applications everywhere else this evening!

I used to fly with International 747 Captains and smokers to boot and instead of being in their 50s, they looked like my great grand pappy. :( Yet, you do what you have to do.

I understand but I don't need the UPS job so I will most likely look elsewhere. Since you mentioned International 747 and I gathered from a previous post you were with Northwest were you on Flight 85 with the rudder hardover?

I'm hoping to do the L.A.-to-Vegas week-long trip in December. I've never been out West, so to be able to do those two cities in one trip would be amazing.3 days in L.A., 3 in Vegas, and then a day spent sightseeing while traveling between the two.

Been in Minnesota this week, in the fall, one of my favorite places, near Taylor Falls, Minnesota and Prescott, Wisconsin. I’m green with envy. :)

No worries about a subdivision here for 10 years or more.

I am forced to go to Switzerland every year. It is terrible! Daughter lives there and her prime time for research is July/Aug when countrywide, "European vacation" shuts down all daycare for a month. Therefore, I go and spoil the grandchild for two weeks, and the other grandparents who are Swiss pick up the other two weeks.

While obviously we do a lot during those two weeks, I spend three weeks with the extra week somewhere which has included Great Britian last year, and previously, Vienna, Barcelona, Madrid, Venice, Canary Islands, etc, It is a rough job, but somebody has to do it.

We've been taking month-long vacations in odd numbered years for a while. I think our 2015 trip and 2017 trip are in this thread already.

The 2019 trip will be from mid Feb to mid Mar. This time we're going to Hong Kong, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
