Please don't tell me Steam is going to be Snow Leopard only...

Well Leopard users should have upgraded by now, Tiger users will mostly be PPC. Snow Leopard would be my target to develop new apps on, i would not waste time on a shrinking market share of a group that traditionally is more likely to have the latest OS quickly.

If your not running Snow Leopard $30 is not expensive.

Not only that, the upgrade process is simple ... I had the box just sitting there until I needed to upgrade to play Dragon Age ... glad I did!

How many games will be available for mac's on steam when it drops?

Just Valve's games that are confirmed. I don't think there will be any third party games already available on launch, since none have been announced so far.

I wouldn't be surprised if Popcaps games were also there (hopefully using Steam Play), and The Settlers 7 which was just recently released.

For realz!!

I hope apple/ valve dont saturate the Steam client with all the BS games that cosumers buy for their iphones:rolleyes: If this occurs, man whats the point of even deleting my bootcamp partition, installing on Steam on my Mac, and re-downloading all my games????

I sure wish there were more iPhone-like arcade apps for the Mac...I miss the arcades :(

Games these days are too much about showing off. It's like a big competition, every company throws their hot new graphics and physics into the Video Game Olympics and gets...the title of Graphics of the Year... -.-'

I much enjoyed games back before they were complicated adaptations of cheesy Patrick Swayze action movies. I wanna pick up a game, start, enjoy it and then put it down without feeling some nag to finish it. F-Zero, could you imagine THAT on an iPhone and Mac? How about another FlatOut title? I'd pay a premium price for a new Podracer. 3D Galaga, anybody? Also, is using wire-frame faux vector graphics against the law since real 3D games became popular? I'd LOVE an update of Battlezone and Mechwarriar with the same simple graphics.

These advanced graphics make games far more complicated than they need to be. Game developers are afraid to pull back and allow a game to be interesting because it's fun, instead they rely on eye candy and wunnabe-bad-#*$%* like Solid Snake...what a name...that's not manly...it's more like a position in the French royal hierarchy, bahahahaha.

OH, so back to the question, has there been wind of any plans to port OTHER Steam titles besides Valve games?

Why would Apple or Valve do that? It would be other developers that would, but it won't happen, it doesn't on Windows so why would it on Mac? Plus Valve doesn't have to let every game onto Steam, I'm sure there would be some minimum requirements.

Sorry to jump of topic :(

But it would seem like an easy marriage of the iphone & ipad gaming business model  Since games for those platforms are far less easy to develop $$$.

Now back the topic at hand... been reading other threads, how people are having issues submitting their info for steam beta! If you cant follow simple directions, basic QA qualifications, you shouldn't deserve a spot

There are games like that on Steam. I've got a few in my collection, they're usually found hidden in the indie games section.

Arcade style, you say? Better quality than the "raved about" Diner Dash, I hope...for the ducky's sake >8

Do you think everyone upgrades the minute a new version of an OS is released ? I just bought this iMac (early 2008) a couple of months ago. Before that, I was still on a iMac G5 with Tiger.
And don't tell me Leopard is old.
The Windows version of Steam still runs on XP and that's almost 10 years old, for crying out loud...

Besides, I do other things besides gaming on my Mac. CS3 and Snow Leopard are not the best of friends and I'm not going to upgrade to CS4 just to be able to play a few games.

Been running CS3(Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign) here on Snow leopard since launch.

If you think that Windows XP's lifetime is the benchmark for software development support you are very wrong.

Linux, Solaris, and Mac OS move at a much faster rate and it is expected if you want to run the latest and greatest software that requires features from the latest and greatest OS you upgrade. If you want to stay with Leopard then use the software available for Leopard, i highly doubt Apple are going to backwards engineer the improvements they've made to Open GL performance and it will end up just re making Snow Leopard again!

I'd imagine that every game that has a Mac port where the Win counterpart is sold on Steam will be available.

Red Alert 3, Dragon Age, Prince of Persia, Spore, Warhammer, Goo, etc from EA, Plants vs Zombies, etc from Popcap.

I'm sorry but Leopard IS old. Your iMac is not new. Not in computer gaming terms.

As for XP, yeah. But then, that is the curse of Windows, of providing to the lowest common denominator.

Really, not trying to be a jerk but that old adage about old inuits and icebergs comes to mind. Or keeping up with packs, formations, whatever.

Well, IF Steam turns out to be Snow Leopard only, then I guess I'll pass for the time being. Maybe next year.

I'd be very cross indeed if Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 turn out to be SL only as well. But I'm sure Blizzard will not go that far...

I have not seen any confirmation that Valve's games require OpenGL 3.0/Snow Leopard. Personally, I think the Steam client+games will be available for both Leopard and Snow Leopard.

Hah, oh yus. There's a lot of good on Steam. Infact my Steam library is split between big AAA titles, classic games and small arcade games. Thankfully the classic+arcade games are quite small and cheap so there's enough wallet and HDD space for them.
I've been playing a lot of Galcon Fusion, Altitude, Gravitron 2, Bullet Candy, Peggles. There's loads of goods to be hads.

Blizzard are using one thing from OpenGL 3 in Starcraft 2 apparently, and World of Warcraft 4.0. I don't know if that means it will require 10.6.3 or not though.

What is stopping gaming users that use Leopard from upgrading to Snow Leopard? Just curious really. I have gamed on both and SL seems to run everything better

Because I do more than just play games on my iMac. I did a clean install a couple of months ago and installed all my apps. I have no intention of doing it all over again for snow leopard.
Besides, my system runs just fine. My motto : If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I don't want to install SL and then discover that some app doesn't work anymore.
I tend to switch OS versions when there have been a few updates. So far, we're at X.6.3. Obviously, still some things to fix. I'll wait a bit longer.

Anyone who owns a Mac does more than just play games with it... If all anyone wants to do with a computer is play games, then a PC would be the computer of choice.

I did an upgrade install to SL, not a fresh install, and have had zero problems with any of my 50 or so apps and my 3 games; including CS4. If you don't want SL, that's your choice, obviously, I'm just saying I didn't have any problems with my own experience.
