So what is Civ4 all about? The metascore and fanbase make me want to play it and £8 for the whole thing is nice (though I set a limit of how much I'm gonna spend in this sale period). But what exactly do you do in these games? Are they like Sim City, or Advance Wars or whatnot?

It's like Advance Wars with city building at the start and a huge tech tree. You have to take into account a lot of infrastructure but they're improved the automation of your worker units.

Be ready for hours to complete game.

At its basic level, you start Civilization with a settler unit and shortly place it somewhere to make a city. That city gets resources which allow you to have some money, advance in science, build buildings, and units. It's not as much city planning as Sim City. You build a building because it gives you (for instance) double food production. Once you feel your city is in a good spot you can build a settler and make another city, then start doing roads, railroads, that kind of thing. You have a whole science tree which you'll need to go through to go from throwing spears to making an International Space Station. You can also build wonders of the world which give your civilization some sort of benefit. For instance in Civ 1, I'd often build the Great Library early on because if any 2 of the AI civs discovered something, I would also get it. It's much more involved than I've described but quite fun.

If you play the game on easy you can pretty much not worry about a great deal of stuff but there are several levels of difficulty, most of which I never play because I'm that bad. :) It is turn based and there's actually a board game of it too.

There is FreeCiv which I've personally never played but should be somewhat similar.

I've only ever played the Modern Warfare series. Is COD5 similar to these as far as gameplay? How long is the campaign?

You mean World at War? The basic gameplay is the same, but WWII weapons are hard to go back to after playing MW1 & 2. I could never get into it like I could CoD2.

Damn Steam sales... made me buy Civ IV AGAIN. $13 for the whole pack, can't really turn it down. There goes so many more hours of my life...

It looks like some of the price cuts took a few minutes to kick in. There wasn't a single discount on the Crysis bundle now it's 66% off.

I was going to say that everyday isn't Christmas but today's deals are in line with the previous ones. I might have to pick up Crysis Maximum.

I was going to pick up the Crysis pack until I saw the SecuROM 5-machine activation limit. Multiple layers of DRM really tick me off.

On another note, everyone here should get Shattered Horizon. I (perhaps impulsively) bought it a few days ago and it's definitely worth even the $15 I paid.

I'll definitely not be buying that game then.

I was thinking about this game as well.

WOW, they did make some big changes, I wonder why, maybe people complained? :D At least now they are realistic!

Ok, I give, I just purchased Shattered Horizon. I was going to get Crysis but I agree, that DRM really sucks. I mean, that's why we use steam isn't it, to get away from crap like that?

I would buy Shattered Horizon but it won't work on my PC (XP, and I'm not moving). HL Source would have been a definite but I own HL1 already and I find the engine more than adequate for it!
Getting Darwinia+Multiwinia though. Would have bought Crysis if not for the DRM. But there's a big upheaval about it on the Steam and EA forums so...

I know EA tried to bring people back in with some good looking games but they're still the uber d**ks they always were.

Happy New Year!

Specials for 1/1/10

So tempted to buy Mass Effect, looks good but I don't know if I will have time to play it anytime soon. BTW I picked up Mirrors Edge the other day and tried it yesterday for the first time. WOW! Great, great game!

If you haven't played Portal, don't pass this one up, incredible game.

Already own most of the games on sale today . I'd buy the Doom and Portal ones. Trials looks interesting and some buddies on Steam really recommend it... but I'll skip. More moolah for tomorrows potential greats!

I picked up Mass Effect. I was thinking about Sam & Max but I haven't even finished Monkey Island or the Wallace & Gromit games I already bought.

Glad today is disappointing. I have already spent too much on Steam the past week!

I hate this thread..... I've spent a small fortune on STEAM too.

So far....

Monkey Island
Bioshock
Mass Effect
Stalker : Clear Sky
Darwinia
Multiwinia
Ghostbusters
Trails 2
Braid
Crysis | Crysis Warhead
Portal
Sam & Max : Complete Pack

I'm tempted with the Eidos pack too... :(:(:(

Question about the Eidos pack... I already played through Batman AA on my PS3 and had recently purchased TR Underworld before the big sale. Do you guys still think the Eidos pack is worth it? Most of the other games really do not interest me as much as the Batman game and TR series; however I have never played any of the other games in the package. Thanks.

Deus Ex is apparently a good game but the graphics are fairly dated if that would bother you. I recently bought it and it seems decent but not sure how long I'll play it due to the old graphics. I'm sure it looked fine in the day but yeah.

The Hitman series are decent but again, older graphics. They can be somewhat frustrating as they are often trial and error in attempting to figure out what you are supposed to do.

I didn't care for Kane & Lynch myself.

I've played a few of the thief games and thought they were fine but one ended up devolving into zombies which made me quit and another bugged out on my such that it was unplayable for me.

Honestly if you've already played Batman and Tomb Raider (which are the big games there) you'd almost be better off not getting it. Mini Ninjas was okay if you like collection games but that's pretty much all that is.

Now if you didn't own Batman or Tomb Raider I'd say get it and the other games would just be extra.

Agreed! That's what I was thinking as well. Although, Batman wouldn't be a bad game to play again, especially since I did not collect everything. I am not worried about older graphics - they would probably play better on my MBP. I am more interested in gameplay - I am currently playing Uncharted 2 on my PS3 and I absolutely love this game. On my MBP I am playing MW2, Crysis and HL2 ep 1. I think Steam is such an awesome portal for gamers.

I hope for your sake you don't quit. It's such an amazing game, probably my favorite game of all time. If the graphics are bothering you, you might want to try out the high-res texture mods that exist, such as hdtp and New Vision

I'm sure it's a decent game and when it came out I'm sure it was phenomenal. I've only gotten through the first mission and I can see that when it came out it would have been excellent but otherwise it's kinda... whatever as far as games today go.
