I wonder if a better example is either

1. Porn chooses VHS over Betamax

or

2. Playstation chooses Blu-Ray over HD-DVD

I think in both cases, the choice made by a very popular media source or distribution network influenced the ultimate outcomes of both contests.

Playstation didn't have a choice. Same company.

The Web killed flash.

It was handy bridge between broadcasting/publishing industries and the Web, but its obsolescent was written in stone before the iPad was announced. The iPad is just providing the sense of urgency.

Adobe knew this, which is why they were working so hard to position Flash as an app platform and not just a media plug-in.

I've been telling people I design sites for to abandon flash for years... I'm happy the world is catching up :p

I think cable companies doing VOiP phone service is a good comparison. It may not be forced exactly, but because of the price difference a LOT of people won't keep or haven't kept their land-line phone from their local phone company.

The only problem with this comparison is that land-line phones provide something that cable phones cannot. Connectivity without electricity or an internet connection. It's why I've kept MY landline. LOL

Flash provides NOTHING we cannot do in other ways... often times, even better.

I think that's an excellent example. It is arguably the single reason VHS won the battle.

You could say it's true of all audio formats at some point.

Cassette killed Vinyl (mostly).
Casette killed 8-Track too...
CD killed Cassette.
MP3/Digital Download is killing CD.

How about DVD killing Laser Discs? Remember those?

Will Blue-Ray kill DVD? Not likely. It's an interim format until Digital Download takes over completely.

Funny how Vinyl has made a resurgence in the collectors world...

In the pro-recording world... Tape got killed by digital tape which got killed by Hard Drive recording. ADAT managed to survive a while, but is finally out. Mini-Disk was positioned to replace ADAT but failed miserably because of unreliability. My husband has a pro 24-Track reel-to-reel Tascam deck sitting in his studio we just about can't give away or find anyone to service...

While I'm not a big fan of flash (buggy resource hog), one big reason I was reluctant to purchase an iPad was that a number of sites I frequent use flash.

To my surprise, when playing with an iPad in a store I found that all of the sites I frequent that use flash somehow managed to offer a good experience via the iPad without flash.

So no brainer - a great device that avoids an ailing technology. Win win for the consumer.

But as folks have said - adobe killed flash, not apple.

Regarding the HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray battle, it was Warner Bros. who signed the death warrant for HD-DVD. Both formats were doing equally well until Warner announced it would release its movies on Blu-ray exclusively. All the other production companies followed suit, and about a month after the Warner Bros. announcement, Toshiba pulled the plug on HD-DVD. This would make Apple similar to Warner in the Flash vs. HTML5 battle, though I don't see Flash going down that quickly.

At the present time the iPad does not have enough market saturation for website developers to dump flash. There are other factors as well.

The justice department probe could have an effect on this.

Web OS soon to be backed by the largest PC manufacturer in the world will have flash in 3 to 6 months.

Android can display flash.

Not sure about RIM yet.

But if Web OS and Android are supporting flash then why can't the iPhone OS?

Show me an HTML5 video conferencing app that accesses the user's mic and camera, written in 30 lines of code or less (I can show you one in Flash!).:)

Even though I was hopeful that it wouldn't matter, I was a bit surprised at how little I notice the lack of Flash. Like you, with all of the sites I've been using, I haven't missed it.

Adobe's killing Flash, making people think that it's only used for ads and video streaming.

Flash sites should have fall back versions, or mobile versions.

Perhaps you guys don't have kids :)

Many, many, kids' interactive websites require Flash.

I think that, far from Flash dying, the advent soon of many smartphones with full Flash... plus tablets running Android / WebOS + Flash... is going to keep the use of Flash for write-once sites and apps as quite popular.

HTML5 is still awaiting universal browser availability, along with a decent IDE.

Not supporting Flash is dumb. Sorry, but all the tap-dancing and rationalizations won't fix that.

And "porn killed Beta" has reached urban legend status. It was a minor factor but the most fun to discuss, so it became THE factor in hindsight.

And the idea HD-DVD was on even footing with Blu-Ray until Warner's move is wishful thinking by someone who bet on HD-DVD. Blu-Ray was most likely going to win all along due to the PS3.

I have 3 of them between 5 and 7. They love playing games on the computers, iPods, and iPad. We still haven't needed Flash to do what they want on the iPods or iPad. They understand what works where and frankly want to play more iPod games from the app store than Flash games on NickJr.com from their favorite TV shows.

We're not going to see Apple change their minds about supporting Flash on the iPhone/iPod/iPad. We will continue to see more and more sites offering an alternative version that doesn't use Flash for the Apple devices. It's already in motion and it will keep heading that way, even if it hurts the overall usability of some sites in the short term.

I agree. I think this "fact" has been blown way out of proportion.

How is it "wishful thinking" to point out something that happened 2 1/2 years in the past? What is there to wish for?
