Today I finally replaced my dual W5590 CPUs with the X5690 CPUs. The audio glitches went away immediately. We already know this data, but wanted to share.

If Apple ever replies to my open bug report on this issue, I will post it here.

Yes, almost no stuttering but very slow system.
At the monent i see only 3 ways to solve a problem.
1 - install Mojave 10.14.3
2 - replace CPUs.
3 - disable one E5520 of two
I'm going the first way, because for my tasks the power of dual E5520 is quite enough. if I need more CPU power, I will use another computer (Hackintosh machine), with both Windows and macOS installed.
I do not want to replace CPUs not because of the price (it is cheap), but because I do not want possible problems associated with the replacement of processors.
On the other hand, I do not believe the next macOS 10.15.x will support our cMP 4.1->5.1, so there is no difference where to stay, on 10.14.3 or on 10.14...7...8....9...
Of course, i hope may be sooner or later Apple will solve this stuttering audio issue, but if no, i feel ok with 10.14.3

P.S. i can send you 10.14.3 if you need it.

the audio issue is not a big problem for me right now, I can play audio to my AppleTV without stuttering, but having 1014.3 would be nice in another drive

I've been getting around the stuttering by having a game client open in the background. Something implemented commonly in most MacOS games alleviates the issue.

MIDI loop? If that's the case, you should be able to play a "silent" instrument on loop through any audio player and it should resolve the issue.

I don't know the reason, just that it seems to work for playback with iTunes.

GarageBand still seems to have some popping going on, but there's a night and day difference when having a game client open in the background, to the point where if the client is running while playing a song and you quit the client, you can practically hear the moment the client process closes as the stuttering resumes immediately.

Have the same issue on my 4.1 @5.1 (with 2x X5550).

Damn ... how can i downgrade to 10.14.3? Have i do a complete Reset? I have TM-Backups and i am not a pro User. I don't want to upgrade the CPUs at the moment so the "easiest" way seems to downgrade ... but i don't know how :(

If you can find it, download the initial 10.14 release.

You can install it via USB stick, You can install 10.14 right on top of 10.14.4 and it will downgrade it to 10.14. You won't lose anything as long as you don't erase your drive.

You'll need to download the 10.14.3 update from Apple's website, MAKE SURE you disable automatic updates once you update to 10.14.3.

Bear in mind that 10.14.3 has a LOT of unpatched security vulnerabilities so while the CPU upgrade path isn’t something you want to do right now it should probably be a future upgrade if you wish to continue using your cMP on the web.

Any previously saved Mojave installer from 10.14.0 to 10.14.2 can be updated with the 10.14.3 ComboUpdate, then you can disable the automatic updates.

Okay ... thx. But i don't know where to find a "trustable" Source ... i download 10.14.3 from All Mac World ... but i have some bad feelings ... there are so many LaunchDaemons ins Library Folder ... before there wasn't so much.

Your TM-backups were made when Mojave was 10.14.3 or 14.4?
TM Backups are made the last 4 Years ... :)

Unfortunately you won't find any. Anything from 3rd party sites/torrents will be risky.

Apple removes the previous released version from the servers the moment the new version is released. You probably need to find a local friend that saved it.

Just another data point; owner of a 2009 4.1 > 5.1 Mac Pro, * core 2.26 GHz E5520.

I have this problem, that correspond to audio overloads at the HAL level; getting this message in the logs:

default 17:50:25.651232 +0200 coreaudiod HALS_OverloadMessage.cpp:165:perform: Audio IO Overload inputs: '' outputs: 'AppleUSBAudioEngine:preSonus:StudioLive AR8:0:1,2' cause: 'Unknown' prewarming: no recovering: no

The game 'workaround' may be just the game program setting higher latency on the driver ?

Anyway, for the records; i get huge problems with an USB audio interface; i tried with two interfaces, both USB class compliant, and i get *continuous* errors (several per seconds) on YouTube; using Cubase i can get things under control (clicks every 10/20 seconds) raising the latency to 512 samples. With the internal audio, i do not get continuous errors, but i haven't checked on a longer period, i was not aware of this thread :->.

Thanks for all the information posted here !!

Somewhere in the history of this thread I think I reported similar findings with increasing latency. I went all the way up to 2048 samples in Cubase and it reduced the popping significantly, but was still present. 2048 is so high though, that this isn't really a solution for midi audio production.

By the way, if any friendly soul on the forum could point me to a 10.14.3 installer i would be grateful. While cpu upgrade is considered, it is not the moment, budgetwise :)

I wouldn't trust ANY full installer from sources other than Apple, but maybe that's just me. Sooner would downgrade to High Sierra if I was looking to downgrade.

Those are the versions Apple is PUBLICLY offering right now.

Agreed. At least it would have current security patches also and continue to be updated by Apple in the short term.
For motives unknown, Apple still seeds Mojave DP10 (18A384a), yes the one before GM, and I checked if it's possible to update it to 10.14.3, but unfortunately only the GM (18A391) can be updated with 10.14.3 Combo update

As I said I took the plunge and bought some used cpus. Installed them today, everything went smoothely, although I had some drops of sweat on my forehead. I have the Early 2009 model, upgraded to the 5,1 firmware, 140.0.0.0.0 bootrom,
macOS 10.14.4 (18E226)

Now running
sysctl -n machdep.cpu.brand_string
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X5680 @ 3.33GHz
and the audio issues went away.

Many, many thanks for all the nice people here on the forum, that helped me with encouragement.

Would you recommend that I also upgrade my bootrom to a higher version? Currently it seems it is running fine. I probably want to wait until the official 14.5 build is out and then download the full installer which upgrades the bootrom?

Thanks again,

Michael.

10.x.5 usually is released in the second half of May, so you probably can wait two or three weeks and download the full installer for 10.14.5 to install 144.0.0.0.0 then.
