Ok.. went through all the motions of getting the offical 2.0 thru itunes.. everything seemed to go smoothly but now my iphone(1st gen) is stuck at the 'slide for emergency' screen and itunes is stuck at 'accessing itunes store' with my iphone selected on the menu... is that normal? I've been sitting here for about 5 minutes now..

I've been at that step for an hour. I don't know if it is an overload problem on their server or if some of us had bad updates.

Servers

According to the manager at my local AT&T store in Northeast Texas (where they were also stuck doing the activations), the databases on Apple's servers which govern activation went down due to heavy load.

He told his staff to enter the AT&T portion into their system, then send users home to complete the activation by tethering to ITunes. In his words "it will work just like the old iphones did". The were hoping to have the system back up "shortly".

He was on a conference call with someone (presumably AT&T and Apple engineers) where he got that info.

Brought my ibook to work, stuck, and quess will just let it sit there and do it's thing. I assume if I disconnect it, bad things will happen.

I'm now getting error code -9838 from iTunes.

Epic fail.

This week apple has gone down in my estimation with the mess up with me.com lack of iphones and now this they are starting dare i say it to get a bit cocky and stretch them selves to much!!

ARGH! say it aint so! the first launch wasnt even close to being this bad.. at least for me anyway.

I guess I'll just use my zack morris cell phone to send/receive calls while the iphone just sits here...

WTF ... I am also getting the -9838 error! I was kicked out and then tried to reconnect.

Apple, did you not expect this. I have to go to work with no phone and only reactivate when I get home!!!

This is the oppisite of TGIF.

Boo for the project manager in charge of this roll out.

Not quite, just a case of demand>supply.

Yeah, Steve™ will sack him personally I should think.

Poor from Apple, I must admit.

Join the party. Mine has been stuck there for well over a half hour

My guess is heavy traffic. I'm still on hold waiting for an Apple Rep on the phone.

After the long period of "accessing iTunes store" I too have now received the -9838 error message. My iphone remains with a USB symbol, arrow and iTunes symbol, and is inoperable? Except presumably for emergency calls, any thoughts as to what one should do next?

I'm getting a 9844 error. Is anyone disconnecting their iphone from their computer or just letting it sit there?

Right . . . but this problem might have been avoided if Apple had released 2.0 ( for current iPhone owners) prior to the 3G launch date. That might have cut down all of this heavy traffic today .
