I went through all the motions as well, it accessed iTunes and seemed to almost be done BUT:

The iPhone (1st gen) is showing up in the Devices category, but when I click on it to finalize, I get

"We could not complete your iTunes Store request. A secure network connection could not be established. Make sure SSL 3.0 or TLS 1.0 is enabled..."

AND THEY ARE ENABLED. This is very unsettling, especially after I find out that my AT&T store only had 7 white 16 GB 3G's...........and I woke up with a beer in my hand passed out on the floor at my friend's house at 7:45! I frantically called my dad (yes I'm only 18 lol) but we didn't make it in time.

Anyway yea I keep getting this error, so now I don't even have a working phone.

Right . . . but this problem might have been avoided if Apple had released 2.0 ( for current iPhone owners) prior to the 3G launch date. That might have cut down all of this heavy traffic today .

Agree. Should of considered the original iPhone owners.

I unplugged a couple times and plugged it back in. The second time I plugged it in, it got an error message, the third time it brought up an activation dialog, and I'm now using my iPhone. Keep at it guys.

Just got off the phone with an Apple Rep. Lots of people are calling in about the same problem. The person just before me got off that accessing the iTunes store message while he was on the phone with the rep. This is after waiting about an hour, of course. The Rep said you can not unplug your phone or go back at this point. All you can do is wait . . . and wait . . . . and wait. He did agree with me that Apple should have released 2.0 prior to the 3G launch today and that would have reduced the traffic problem they're experiencing now.

Hope no one tried to do this just before going to work or a scheduled appointment. ;)

Well, I don't know what just happened but I turned my phone off then back on and now it is working.

Also on the apple forum people said to click between your iPhone and Music repeatldly for 5 mins and it should work.

Hope it helps!

Should start a new thread . . .
How long have you been waiting to access the iTunes Store? :D

Apple should give the winner (one with the longest wait time) a brand new 16 gig 3G iPhone ;)

I kept unplugging/plugging my iPhone and eventually got the above graphic telling me that "iPhone activations are unavailable at this time". Unplugged one more time and iTunes has been attempting to access the iTunes store for a couple of minutes now.

So, tried to upgrade my 1st gen iphone to 2.0. I had to restore it, I succesfully restored it. but now I am stuck at the "slide for emergency" screen. does this basically mean I have to reactivate my iphone AGAIN?

Save You Plugs

Save wear and tear on your Plugs and Cords.
This does the same thing.
When you get the message telling you it couldn't access the iTunes Store for your request, do this:
1. Click on one of the other links above in the Menu like Music, or Applications, or Radio
2. Then Click on the iPhone link again.

If you Click on Check For Purchases, you'll find that it accesses the Store just fine.

This seems to be an Activation Server issue.
