No, it's hardly sarcasm.

Students don't need additional motivations for wasting time in college. A free XBox is the equivalent of saying "don't study, play Halo instead!"

Yeah, because students never play video games without the encouragement off the manufacturers. You could also quite easily argue that a free iPod Touch is the equivalent of saying "don't study, play Angry Birds instead!"

Out of the two, if I was a student, I'd go for the cheaper PC and get a free XBox. I imagine many will follow suit. Although, I also imagine a Mac is also still tempting to students. This however, is a good deal from Microsoft. If only non-students got the deal. :(

Actually I kind of have to agree, but what they SHOULD do is "Free XBox with subscription to DreamSpark or XNA Studio" or whatever it is called now where you can develop games for use on the 360. MS actually has quite a large amount of educational value when it comes to game and software development and they NEVER promote it.

EDIT: To clarify my post I mean that the PC + XBox should include an free XNA subscription. (XNA may be free now, it used to be $99 a while back).

Thank you for proving my point. As a student, of course you want the free XBox.

However, there is not a chance in hell that my children will be taking an XBox to school. They are there to complete classes, get an education, and finish a degree - not to play Halo. If they want to take their own XBox, they are free to pay for their own schooling.

College is so much more than classes. It's much more than Xboxes and iPod Touches as well, but it's much more than classes.

In all seriousness, some of the most important lessons I learned in college came outside of the classroom.

umm they already give students free access to DreamSpark. Only requirement is an EDU account.

As for student sorry not like giving them Xbox is going to change the study habits. You have any idea of ways to waste time in college. Hell Video games was one of my ways to blow off steam when I was at school and now on my 2nd degree my 360 is still used to blow off steam and take a break.

Sorry that is not going to stop them. Plenty of people in the dorm has 360's or something else and just a way to blow off steam. I will tell you first hand that video game consel or not that did not effect my study time. The amount of time I blew off was the same. Just what I was doing during the blow off time changed.

PC sales are down, netbook sales are down. Mac sales are up. The iPad is a blockbuster hit, and great for school, curently eating into PC sales, which will only continue. Young people love Apple gear. The iPad has become a household name and Apple can barely keep up with demand.

It's pretty obvious what's happening here. MS has iPad on the mind.

Apple doesn't need to offer more than a measly iPod to move Macs. MS needs to bundle the friggin crown jewels to move PC boxes.

Move stagnating PCs by throwing in a game console for free. The consumer profits from MS' desperation. Except for the PC part. Just give em a free console and they can get what they really want: more Apple gear.

I had an Xbox (and PS2) all throughout college and did just fine.

There have always been things around to distract students, going back to the days before video game consoles existed. Better it be video games and not drugs or booze.

Parenting is about instilling values in your kids; not banning them from owning things.

It's a good thing the computer they take to school won't have distractions like games or web surfing or porn.

Portable media players would have broader appeal but then MS could hardly be giving away Zunes. That would have been an embarrassment. :D This has the potential to generate follow-on sales through XBL and games but then so do iPods. Kudos to MS for trying, however. eBay should be interesting over the next few months.

Somehow I feel as though your kids are going to buy an xbox and lots of beer their first week of college, and you're never going to know about it...

I had an Xbox 360 and a PS3 in University and I now have a degree!

Absolutely. Losing sales to not just the iPad (the catalyst to this) but to Macs as well. You don't need to buy *new* PCs to sync with iTunes.

I absolutely believe this. They're freaking out over in Redmond and what we're seeing is some of the reaction. PC sales are unfortunately MS' bread and butter. Any downturn in that represents a major problem. And not an MS tablet in sight to show for it.

Students need real computers for school, not iPads. Laptop + XBOX >>>> iPad

Also, based on price, the XBOX (200) is cheaper than the iPod Touch (230+) so it seems Apple is more desperate. The XBOX, in your opinion from your response, is worth more though.

1. Pay $700 for not-so-bad laptop to play Age & Total War on.

2. Sell xBox on eBay for $$$.

3. Enjoy sweet discount on said laptop at Microsoft's expense.

Nothing like having controlling parents when one is over 18

Don't worry about them playing video games though, they will probably be playing beer pong instead

As the father of a daughter who is completing her sophomore year at college, I don't get too involved in her day-to-day activities. The only thing I care about are the grades at the end of each semester. It is only if they are bad will I say something to her. So far, it hasn't been an issue.

That said, college ain't cheap. If my child wants to play around and not be successful in the classroom, they can do it on their own dime, not mine.

I don't see why some are comparing the iPod touch to an Xbox though? Two different devices to my mind. The touch is a portable media (mainly music) player that can also play games while the xbox is a game console which would stay in your room or say the TV room in a student res or shared apartment.

If I had an xbox I'd still want a music player-though I'd probably get a Nano or Shuffle in this case.

And I don't *need* a $600 subsidized iPhone 4 that costs me a shade over $100/month.

But Apple has to give away their iPods to students for free because their sales were down 17% from last quarter.

I don't see how you can disagree with Alerian's flawless logic. Everyone knows that every student who is successful in college devotes 100% +/- 1% of their time to studying, schoolwork, and other academic pursuits. This is less a subjective statement and more a fact of nature- college students simply do notconcentrate on anything other than their studies.

Those that stray from the righteous path even a little clearly do not deserve any sort of parental support- whether it be emotional or financial.
