ohhh i got a good one. This is coming from my friend who is an IT major in college and already has a CISCO certification.

Me: "Im thinking about getting a Mac when they upgrade the notebooks in June"
Him: "ehhh, I don't know, Macs don't talk well with PC's"

...at that point every ounce of respect i had for him left me imidately

-Samwise

Interesting considering that Cisco give new hires a choice of a PC or Mac upon hire...

The question of the week at our school, where all the teachers have Gateways running Win98, is: How do you change the time?

I'm using my Powerbook, btw.

Double click on the time in the taskbar to change it, and then beat whoever's decided to keep Windows 98 over the head with said laptops :D

Oh BTW, the dumbest quote I ever heard was "You cant ... go on myspace with Mac"

If only that were true. I would love it if my Mac protected me from myspace. ;)

Bath, yookay.
I just get the usual 'Yeah my computer's on the fitz'
'Yeah well it is a mac.'

Or:

'Yeah sorry I didn't send you that email - our router's broken.'
'That'll be your mac.'

'Could you send me that file again? I accidently deleted it.'
'Should have used a PC.'

EVERY TIME.

Wanna mess with their heads? Tell them that they could crash at any moment, unless they are getting their time from time server that is closest to them. Then say you are late for an appointment, and walk away as quickly as possible.

Windows "experts" like this are just like those car mechanics who refuse to buy a new car and insist that the car with the open hood, sitting on their dirveway, that hasn't moved in about 6 months, that they are under every day trying to fix, is better than the "silly car" you just bought.

You know some of those too??

Most of my firends are intelligent and don't say anything bad about Macs for the sake of Mac-bashing; they just prefer their Windows machines, mostly due to being comfortable with them. One friend finally decided to get a Mac (due to hating Vista so much) and bought a loaded 15" MBP. Because of work, he has immediately installed Windows XP via Bootcamp. I told him to give it a few weeks before he starts to really grasp the differences in the OS's. I think he'll like OS X but I think he'll remain a Windows-user, too.

He's a smart one then, wanting to know how to use more than one operating system, and willing to spend some time to do it.

Hey guys, just reading through this thread but am only at page 2 and have to get this one out there as I gotta go in a minute.

I'm in a university/college program which majors in networking. I'm in a lab and pull out my mac and ask who is sharing UT(for pc that I want to install on crossover). This windows forever user tells me, "but you have to configure your computer to the proper workgroup to connect to his share". Then I pull up the list of all the computers in the lab. "Oh!" He says.

I ask, "what computer name is it?" He tells me "just connect to his IP". I admit, I don't know how to connect to a windows share via IP. So he says, "sigh... I don't even want to say it" shaking his head at my mac.

Yeah... hahaha, I don't even and won't say a lot of things to some windows users.

So what is the acronym for a windows network? Or is afp sufficient?

SMB is what you'd probably use (Server Message Block)

You should also be able to do Go -> Connect to Server (or Apple-K)
type in smb://computername/share

where computername is the network computer name you are connecting to and share is the name of the shared folder you want to access

(ie in my case here at work, I use smb://dell/desktop and smb://dell/documents)

AFP is Apple File Protocol, only (AFAIK) used for connecting to Macs.

zero2dash is right, if you type in AFP you will be telling your network browser to only look for an Apple File Protocol share. SMB is the acronym you are looking for.

Don't forget, a wealth of information is available, right in the finder under the help menu.

A cut-and-paste right from help:

You can connect to Windows computers and servers on your network from your Mac.

To locate and connect to Windows computers on your network, you can use the Network browser in the Finder.

If you cannot locate the Windows computer in the Network browser, you may be able to connect to it using the Connect To Server dialog in the Finder.

To locate the Windows computer, you need to know the workgroup name for the computer and the network name (called the "computer name") for the computer. To connect to the computer, you also need a user name and password and the name of the shared folder you want to access. If you don't have this information, contact the person who owns the computer or your network administrator.

Of course, "mister windows" doesn't like to lose, so be prepared for the classic retorts: "Well that doesn't prove anything", or "Well, Macs still suck".

The rest of the advice from help:

1. In the Finder, choose Go > "Connect to Server."
2. Type the network address for the computer in the Server Address text box using one of these formats:

smb://DNSname/sharename
smb://IPaddress/sharename

3. Follow the onscreen instructions to type the workgroup name and a user name and password, and choose the shared folder you want to access.

I use both a Mac and a Win XP box on the job, and I routinely share files between them.

Folks believe me, nothing causes mister windows to get his shorts in a knot worse than someone who can use both operating systems, and says "I prefer the Mac because it's just better". They really have no idea what to do here, so they reach for the insult, or what they believe to be a witty retort. Usually, said witty retort simply sounds tired.

Kinda off topic but whenever i access my windows machines i have to type in the IP address. I can't just go smb://Windows-Machine/share, i have to put in smb://192.168.x.x/. I don't know if this is normal or just something wrong with my set up.

"No escape from Reality...”
More a statement.

Me: "Did you get your new computer for home?"
Co-worker:"Yes, we got an HP and 19" LCD screen."
Me: "HP is good. How do you have it hooked up?"
Co-worker:"Comcast, doesn't work now though."
Me:"You have to call Comcast to do a reset to your new computer, how is it hooked up to the modem?"
Co-worker: "by the Earthnet..."

:p

Upon finally convincing a friend's family to get an iMac as their next computer my friend's mom excaimed at the Apple store "Where's the box?!"

Does more need to be said?

That's not really that stupid. That's probably what anyone would say if they had never seen an iMac G5/Intel before. Heck, I thought that the first time I saw an iMac G5 (wasn't an Apple person back then), and my parents thought that when I was showing the iMac to them online. It's just one of the first of many pleasant surprises to a switcher. :D

Maybe we should start spreading some nonsense of our own, just to see it it "takes".

For example, anytime someone says "I heard Macs can't use the internet", tell them "Oh it can, but you need a flux capacitor, with the latest firmware upgrade". If they buy that one, tell them that you need to go to the store for the latest Token Ring adapter, or something.

I've only have my iMac for six days, but it didn't take long for me to experience the ignorance.

I was showing it off to my brother and his fiancé. She said that she liked them but that she has a friend with one and whenever she prints things he sends her it will have little boxes mixed in with the letters. So, she would never get one because you can't print things from a Mac on a "regular computer".

I tried to explain to her that maybe the problem is on her end and that she might not have the same font he's using. I think she was lost.

She's graduating in May with a degree in Education. Very scary.

The stupidity is on two levels here, and I'm not sure which is worse. There are millions of idiots blindly using Windows thinking it is the only OS in town. There are also millions of idiots majoring in education that consistently graduate at the bottom of their class. Think about it: education focuses on methodology rather than content. In other words, it doesn't matter what you know, it matters how you present it. That is pure excrement--ask anyone who has spent the time mastering a subject with content.

The conclusion is dead wrong, but the problem is quite real. There are a lot of fonts we have that are not on windows, and that often gives problems with font support. I always export to PDF to be sure

I've read this whole thread and it's very amusing.

I'm doing a Graphic Design course and all of our computers are Macs. Last year in my class there was this one guy who couldn't stand Macs at all. It was like Macs had attacked him or something. He would constantly say Macs suck and Windows is better etc.

One day in class I had accidently left something of mine sit on the mouse of my iMac. We were in a circle listening to what the teacher had to say and then my Mac put the screensaver up and it started flashing on and off. Because what I had sitting on the mouse was causing it to move. Everyone looks over and one guy moves the stuff off the mouse. Then the dude who hates Macs confidently says out loud "Macs don't even need virus to stuff up!!!" Everyone else was like WTF?!

Another time he argued with a teacher as to why they were using Macs. The teacher responded because the majority of the industry uses Macs. Which is a fair enough reason.

He also argued with a teacher that the Option key should be called the Alt key because that's what it was called first. He also complained that the USB ports were on the back of the iMac and that he had to turn the iMac around slightly to access them. He believed they should have been on the front.

Thank god he's not in my class this year.

It wasn't something they said but my friend at work got a new HP laptop. The box was about the size of the box for my Mac Pro. He pulled the laptop out. The first thing out of my mouth was "wow, it's an ugly black version of the portable mac."

Apple_MacPortable_System_s1.jpg

The thing was huge, and not the screen size. I mean the thing was thick, as thick as the hype around Vista.

I also had a co-worker bouncing around work singing "Crapintosh, crapintosh crapintosh". Mind you this is an engineer acting as he did at 11. with in 2 minutes he had 6 other engineers around him (myself included) "What in-tosh?" we asked.
