Yep want one of them too then it would be a complete 30 year cycle for me from a HP 200LX from late 80's to Andromeda with plenty of PDA, Pocket PC, Smart phones etc in-between :D

Lol, yeah it seems we are going full cycle. This whole idea that your PC should fit into your pants pocket is stronger than ever, and maybe it can actually be accomplished.

Wow the Vaio P !! I had one, had to import it from Clover back in the day. That was back when Sony was still innovative, they had a lot of handhelds and ultra small laptops.

The thing that is missing from these modern "hiptop" devices is a high-level scripting language for creating quick little apps and scripts. Something like OPL for the Psion devices, or CASL on GEOS, or REXX, etc. I'm sure that more modern languages like PHP, Python, etc. can be installed on them, but having the scripting language "embedded" in the system made it a powerful tool... could fully exploit the hardware.

I suppose in this mad-dash world, who has time to tinker with stuff like that.

Yes forgot about that, there was whole communities set up for sharing little apps etc, I only had a Psion for a couple of weeks on trial :)

My Surface Go should be in tomorrow.

My surface go will be in tomorrow as well. Purchased the base model and will be replacing my iPad Pro. I debated for a long time between the base and upgrade simply due to the eMMC storage. Ultimately I decided it was not worth the extra $150 for the SSD.

Played with the base model in best buy yesterday and the performance certainly does not disappoint especially considering it's loaded down with demo software and services. Sure the SSD would be faster but the eMMC will get the job done for me.

eMMC 5.x in that gen of Intel CPU does 400 MB/s throughput. It's not NVMe level but wouldn't call it slow.

I got the upgrade mainly for the RAM.

RAM for me was not really a consideration since I will not be doing anything intensive on the go... I just needed something that could run light windows apps that I need to be mobile... (lots of software relating to vehicle tuning and programming)

Interesting... I saw speeds up to 250 MB/s read and 125 MB/s write quoted but not 400 MB/s read. I was not able to test with the one in the store since it was locked into S mode but I will test mine out when I receive it tomorrow.

Yeah, we are using this for different things. I'm going to try this as my one main device.

Another nice expanded review that touches upon SSD speed, battery life, etc.

I wouldn't expect anything else from Daniel Rubino.

He had nothing bad to say about the Surface 3 when it was released but now that the Surface Go is released, he's admitting (in this video) that the Surface 3 was terrible. Wait a year or so when the Surface Go 2 is released and THEN he'll admit to the deficiencies of the Go.

The hardware looks nice but I'm still struggling to see why this should be purchased over the Surface laptop. A platinum Surface laptop with a more powerful i5 CPU, 8GB RAM, and 128GB of storage is $799 at Microsoft.com vs. $679 for the higher spec'd GO. You get a bigger keyboard and trackpad, larger display and supposedly better battery life.

I get it if there is a size preference but that strikes me as the only reason to get a Go vs. laptop. The tablet ecosystem is not a differentiating factor for Windows. Just seems like much more value and performance in the laptop.

I think it's all about the size, and don't underestimate the value of the smaller size for a lot of people

31 updates later I am happy to report that the base model does not disappoint! Should work just fine for daily tasks and light work loads. Ran a disk speed test as well.... eMMC seems to just about match the SSD in write speed but obviously the SSD is faster in read. That being said, 256 mb/s is pretty decent.

How's the access times with AS SSD? Typical SSD is about <0.05 ms read/write
