I think I have it too and i bought mine last summer. It hasn't bothered me yet.

I will wait for the SP4 - I mean, it has to come out sometime this year, right?

Probably when the Broadwell chipsets are released. I don't think the SP computer line is going to get the Core M chips, so like the MBPs, they're waiting on Intel.

Yep exactly - the Core M ones don't exactly fit what I my new addition feature need for the device is - electronic flight bag.

Unless they're moving from the dual core U to the quad core version, they can't be waiting on Intel. Core U has been out for at least a month now.

Does anyone know how to remove Fresh Paint? I don't see it in programs so I can't seem to remove it. Holding the icon in the start menu also doesn't bring up uninstall.

It's like the pen. I tried it once or twice after buying and haven't touched it since.

Most likely waiting for Windows 10 official release as well as give the SP3 a year out there.

Yeah, good point, I think the high end Windows Phones are waiting in the wings for Windows 10 as well.

Returned my SP3 out of pragmatic reasons:

1. desperately waiting for a SP4 to be at least announced soon ;).

2. having heavily invested into Apple hardware and software (Macs, iPhones, iPads and countless apps) throughout my whole company, I am eager to give Apple one last chance with iPad Pro and compare potential use cases with a Surface Pro 4.

Nevertheless all said above regarding my experience with SP3 keeps being the same: for the first time I am really impressed about Microsoft Product in a long time!

In my opinion, MS now needs to:

- fix those Win8.1 annoyances with Windows 10 and new Surface,

- release a new flagship Windows Phone running Win10 (I actually look forward to a Nokia 930 successor),

- make them work seamlessly together like continuity on OS X / iOS,

and it will become very tempting...

Just my 2 cents

Time, because it rules EVERYTHING!
Don't know if it's been said yet, but the rumours are that Microsoft MAY launch a new Surface, NOT A PRO, next month or May that will be like the Surface RT version, only this time it will run FULL Windows!

So it could be a 10" Surface tablet running on an Atom or Core M class processor running full blown Windows..

MS have some sort of build conference event at the end of next month:

http://www.stuff.tv/news/standard-surface-3-full-windows-reportedly-launching-soon

Could be very interesting.......

A few other sites have also picked up on the story, it would make an awful lot of sense for a 10" $500 ish tablet to be made by them, based on the Surface design with all the keyboard options and a nice Core M CPU.
This would then leave the Pro 4 to keep it's high pricing and get the latest i5 and i7 CPU's with a 12" screen, then increase the RAM and storage options.

I predict a lot of Microsoft rumours next month then?

Yes, I've been hearing a lot about that too. If Microsoft does that, they'll continue to be plagued by the naming nonsense they started from the beginning of the Surface line.

Any x86 Surface without the "Pro" qualifier will be confused with the ARM versions. If they call it "Surface 3" (or Surface 4... they don't mind skipping numbers ;) ) it will be assumed to be a follow on to the Surface RT (then renamed just "Surface"), and Surface 2.

Those who don't keenly follow hardware news have been told "get the pro version" if they want a "real" Windows Surface.

It will be interesting... especially since other Windows tablet makers have not been sitting still.

I am hoping for a 10-12" Surface with digitizer and Core M. Should also still use the keyboard. I guess I would prefer to stick with 12" so it could use the same accessories. If they could make it thinner and lighter with slimmer bezels, 12" should be fine. Get rid of the i3 version of the pro and make this the entry point at $699 or something. I want them to keep it premium; leave the cheap tablets to the rest of the market.

This is VERY exciting. I've been espousing this since day one, get rid of RT which was an atrocious mistake and just use an atom proc for the cheaper surface tablet. I don't use my SP3 for anything heavy duty so as long as they include the kickstand and keyboard on the atom model I'll be the first in line to downgrade. It will be tough to decide if they do release a 12 or 14" model as I'd love to have a larger tablet. Anyhoo having more choice is a good thing.

It would make for a cool Windows laptop. Will fit in with my future setup plans. I like the Surface idea and quality and design, would have got an RT if it ran full Windows.

Isn't an iPad beefy enough as a flight bag?

Or do you mean something other than PDF vault.

B

well, I need electronic flight bag software which works in the UK, and it seems like the only good choice I have if Jeppesen's Mobile FliteDeck, which I abhor.

But I'd end up using it for a lot of stuff

For me the 12" form factor is the smallest size I'd be willing to get. If they rolled out a 14" that would be interesting because I think ease of handling decreases but the usefulness of the display increases, i.e., 14" display is better then a 12"

I'm generally happy with performance, if they went with a Core M processor would that decrease performance over the current gen?

I think the performance concerns would depend on active or passive cooling. The current U series are rated for 15W TDP but can use up to 25W in short (super short) bursts.

Core M should (in general) match the older parts as long as there is enough thermal headroom.

As it is now, the SP3 throttles pretty heavily (compared to the SP2).

Core M should provide adequate performance if your cpu needs are 'bursty' in nature. Ie. typical office or casual use. If you have dedicated programs in your workflow that tax the processor for minutes at a time, the Core M isn't for you.

A 10" with a Core M CPU would be very tempting indeed

I would love to use one for a bit of coding on the sofa.

Comparing my 2012 rMBP with the Haswell Core i5 in the SP3, my nearly 3 year old rMBP does out perform the SP3. Tbh, I was thinking it would be on par at the very least. I'm not disappointed as much as surprised.

The SP3 isn't massively slow, rather some tasks, such as using Lightroom and DXO Optics Pro are noticeably faster on my rMBP.

Yeah, I think Microsoft was really judicious with its use of throttling in the SP3. If you have a means to cool the unit down (the whole unit, not just the CPU), the performance improves greatly. In day to day use I really don't find the SP3 to be faster than my 2010 15" MBP (yay SSD, lol).

The bigger the better for me as I only use my SP3 either sitting down or in bed, I don't really carry it much or use it outside. A 14" for work/home and a 8" mini for on the go would be perfect.
