It was sync engine reasons. That's why they're coming up with what they say is a better replacement.

That was one of the reasons in addition to the placeholder size and the reasoning that the placeholders were confusing to consumers (how stupid can consumers be?). They should have simply waited until the replacement solution was ready, nixing the placeholders is taking away a significant portion of function.

I read recently that October or so is when they will add OneDrive improvements, although no specific mention of what will be improved. I'm hoping that they put the placeholders back in. From what I read they are going to merge OneDrive for business/SharePoint with OneDrive personal. I've never had many syncing issues with OneDrive personal, but I use OneDrive for business/SharePoint and I must say it's a steaming pile of you know what. Endless sync issues, poor tech support, it's a nightmare. I hope they aren't moving over OneDrive personal a SharePoint system.

Placeholders, as they were, are gone and never coming back (to my knowledge). I haven't heard anything about them coming back from Thurrott or Foley.

Meh Thurrott is an idiot who is right like half the time. Yes they are slated to make some kind of a comeback, although it's unclear what form they are supposed to take. Supposed to be in the big update in the fall. That's straight from MS, I believe the wording was they were bringing back "key features of placeholders" or something like that. MS is aware this is a very sore point with some OneDrive users and they have something up their sleeve I bet. Now they could change direction and not put this in, who knows.

I gotta say I just received a Surface Pro 3 at work and immediately installed Windows 10 on it. It's not a bad little machine at all. I'm an Apple guy at home and love my iMac, but for work I use and support Windows. 8.1 I completely skipped, but 10 is pretty nice and the SP3 is something I hope the iPad Pro evolves into.

No its a nice product, I like using it, and windows 10 makes is a big plus as well in my book :D
I've got the Windows 10 upgrade is ready notification on my Acer Aspire Switch 11. I'm hesitant to upgrade because of the removal of some tablet-optimized features (like the charms bar). Plus I'm not confident that the drivers for the synaptic pen will work as well as they do under 8.1.

What are some of the benefits you are experiencing running Windows 10 on a hybrid device like the SP3?

To be honest, it depends which ecosystem you're using. Edge sort of works fine when you switch to tablet mode and you don't lose a whole lot. By contrast, if you're a chrome user there is no option for "metro" mode anymore. I think the interface looks better but I think the WORTHWHILE upgrades are sort of the Cortana usage [if this doesn't matter to you, then meh] and the mail/edge/calendar improvements. If you're using windows primarily just to use google services, I don't know that you'll have much of a different experience with W10.

Be careful, Edge is a HUGE downgrade for tablet use. I will miss charms but I can live without it. I will miss swipe through apps but I can force myself to adapt. But there is no way I will go back to using a desktop browser on a tablet. Yes, Edge is a desktop browser, it has larger UI elements which make it easier on a touch screen, but the functionality is almost all desktop from how you navigate pages, to how you access favorites. If you haven't I highly suggest you try Edge out before you install win10 and see if you can live with that on a touch tablet. Don't forget the way the SP3 keyboard magnetically attaches and the portion of the screen which makes it hard to touch because of that.

You don't have to wait. Just search for Windows 10 download and you'll get to the right place.

Why do you find that surprising? Live tiles screen is terrific for using the Surface as a tablet.
I use Live Tiles on the "desktop" Start Menu. I guess the touch screen makes the difference. I really do enjoy Live Tiles and the News/Weather apps.

The new start screen is a joke for us desktop users. It's a start screen for Metro Apps that no one uses.

It's actually not bad, this is from someone who hated it initially. I actually uninstalled Classic Shell yesterday and customized the win10 menu and am growing into it. It still feels a bit disjointed, but it does bridge the divide between desktop and tablet use fairly well. What it does well is actually make the desktop easier to use in tablet mode, yet it doesn't make using it as a desktop any harder.

Every time I go back to my Surface Pro 3, I'm reconsidering my iOS choice. It just keeps getting better with each build.

I'm much happier after I unpinned all the Windows 10 metro apps and minimized the start screen by dragging it left and down to reduce the empty space since I hardly touch them.

My Surface Pro 3 continues to be a stellar machine providing me with a great experience. Windows 10 is very well done, stable fast and fun. It's an excellent companion to my much loved 2015 15" MBP.

I am loving my SP3. I have an 6 year old MacBook and my work Thinkpad were not doing the trick. My Mac had seen its better days, and the only reason it's still around is because I need it for my iPhone and iPad. Of course the work PC has to stay around.

My SP3 IMO feels like what the MacBook should be. I think Microsoft is innovating more than Apple right now is computers. The SP3 just feels different and it changes the way I use my computer. It can be w work computer, but also a power table at home. It's the best of both worlds, and if Apple thing the iPad pro is their answer. They are in for a huge surprise. It's just a large iPad.

Personally as an OS X user and a Win10 user I find the idea that the start screen/menu is horrible, to be laughable at best. Especially considering Apple has no direct equivalent. To be honest, in both it is far faster to type the name of the app than it is to hunt for it's icon.

Why did my SP3 suddenly change it's desktop back to the way Windows 8 was with the whole Metro look? I liked the way the start menu was when I first upgrade to 10.

I turned it on today and I don't like the new look.
