"System" Taking Alot of Space

Hi, I have a similar problem with my 2017 MacBook Pro. System currently takes up about 100 Gb. I tried following the code and found that "Users" is taking up the most space. But when I try the next line of code it says theres no such file or directory for users...

I have found the problem. the iMovie library was taking 95 gb. deleting it got rid of the system storage part and gave me 118 gbs. Thank you.

This thread is so helpful! I used the command to find the culprit of high System storage. It was all those historic HomeBrew packages. Once I run brew cleanup, it instantly released 55GB storage.

hey guys - i have similar issues but instead of users my issue is in this directory --> /opt/pt/Library/Containers/

with 84 folders reading at 2gb each!? adding 168GB to my system folder.

Any clue if i can delete these and resolve the issue? or is there a command needed?

I know the command to delete that, but I'm a little afraid to delete it not knowing what it is. I don't want to break anything.

I don't have that /opt folder and Google is not helping at all. @chown33 any ideas?

I suspect that the /opt files are created by either malware or a third party application.

I would try running MalwareBytes and EtreCheck.

whenever I'm in doubt about safely deleting files/folders I turn to Carbon Copy, I make a fresh cloned backup, then I go wild deleting the suspicious files and see what happens.
Usually I'll work my system hard for a few hours/days and if nothing shows up I'm good to go, and if the system is broken then it's time to restore the known good clone.

Hey Guys, thought I would just let you know that the issue I had would be like unpicking several balls of yarn sitting in a box that had been shook for 1000 years - so I reformatted my mac and started again! What I have done this time is got my mac in the desired baseline and created a backup image to boot from the next time this happens... :/

Thank you SO much Weaselboy. I was facing a similar issue. According to Storage Manager, my Documents folder was taking up ~70-90GB of space, despite there only being some eBooks and a few pictures in there. Likewise, my System "folder" was taking up much more space than usual (70-90GB as well, instead of around 50). Thanks to your guidance I was able to track the issue down. I'm in the cryptocurrency space, and I suppose I ended up running one of my desktop wallets as a Full Node (which requires I download the entirety of the blockchain) on accident. Those files have been deleted, and my storage space has been put in check again. Thank you!

I agree this has been a very helpful thread. I have a similar issue (>500 GB of System) and have narrowed the problem down using previous advice. Now, I'm trying to figure out which "Data" folder I can safely delete. I'm currently in the process of a new TM backup. Please let me know if you have any thoughts.

Mac says i have about 9GB out of 250, and of that about 100GB are trapped in system storage.

Running the code says i have 145gb in User data, and of that user data 100 in music, but i doubt it. My itunes library should be in the cloud for the most part. Even if it were all on my desktop, i only have 55gb of music. Maybe im missing something?

Looks like 29GB in the user Library which is a little large. Drill down more with this.

sudo du -d 1 -x -c -g ~/Library

Im having this issue as well, in Mojave. Do these commands work there? I'm getting a lot of Operation Not Permitted messages.

My System is taking up 115GB but when I try Calculating Folder Size and showing invisible files and folders I don't see anything even remotely adding up to that amount.

Any guidance is appreciated.

Let's try two things...

First that storage readout gets data from the Spotlight index, and if that index is corrupt the readout will be all wrong. Try running this command in Terminal to reindex Spotlight. Give it a half hour os so to finish then see if the storage readout seems more accurate.

sudo mdutil -E /

Also, if you have Time Machine turned on it can create local snapshots that use space. Try running this command to delete the local snapshots and see if that helps.

tmutil  listlocalsnapshotdates / |grep 20|while read f; do tmutil deletelocalsnapshots $f; done

Hmm... what does Disk Utility show?

Try a command-r boot to recovery and from there start Disk Utility and run first aid on the drive.
