Hmm... what does Disk Utility show?

Try a command-r boot to recovery and from there start Disk Utility and run first aid on the drive.

Disk Utility doesn't complete the verification. I get the following set of information:

Checking Snapshot 1 of 3
warning: obj_id: (31922211820404736) has invalid type 0
error: btn:1: invalid key order (1) oid 889094 / oxid 0
Snapshot is invalid.
The volume dev/disk0s2 could not be verified completely.

On Mojave, Terminal does not have access to a lot of the user data. Full Disk Access has to be granted to Terminal.

Can you backup with Time Machine to an external disk then boot to command-option-r Internet recovery to erase the whole disk then restore your backup to see if that fixes the corruption.

After you erase the drive, do a first aid run then also to be sure it is okay.

Should I do a clean OS install first? Or can I only restore from the Time Machine backup? I've kept regular TM backups so I'm good there.

No need to install first... just restore from the TM backup and that will put everything back.

Well, DFA crashes and reboots the system. I can’t seem to find any error messages or logs although I’m not sure where to look. The system seems pretty borked now although it will still internet boot. I am unable to erase the drive at this point unless there’s another magic trick to pursue.

Any ideas? Or am I left with buying a new blade and starting from scratch?

I'm at a bit of a loss if even Internet recovery crashes out.

Hey Guys!

Registered just to let you know how I've overcome this freaking issue.

SOLUTION:
Google File Stream Cache consumed 70 Gb's of space and Storage Management showed this as "System". So I headed to ~/Library/Application Support/Google/DriveFS and deleted the whole folder. I then launched DriveFS and set it up, and it's running smoothly, and my system space is back to 30 Gb from 90 Gb.

Other recommendations:
Look through all your folders in the Application Support if they are eating up your space.

Hope this helps,
Lex

It looks like you did not wait long enough for the command to finish. Run it again and wait until you see "total" at the very bottom.

Code:
sudo du -d 1 -x -c -g /

Sorry bout that. Here we go. Still doesnt add up?

Oh also I did read though this thread. Tried most of what was suggested, including indexing, time machine, etc. I've read on another thread that the MAC OS updates are hidden in a file and they start piling up. However I used OmniDisk and Disk Inventory X but their figures don't add up to the 235 GB that it says is being used by system in my Mac report / constant warning.
