Thanks Arn. He already has my .99; but it will let others look. Too bad he won't enable Left mouse click and keyboard like Mocha VNC Lite.

I emailed the dev mentioning that some people had been confused about the mouse-functionality. Because of the confusion, he says he's set the price to Free, which should be reflected in the next day or two.

arn

Price is showing "free" for me.

Thanks for talking to the dev! Ever feel like the world reacts to the snap of your fingers :D ?

Wow! I'm (rather pointlessly) posting this using teleport. I dont believe how fast and slick this is! The implementation of pretty much every feature wipes the floor with the VNC lite client. It's insanely fast!

i have two 24" 1920*1280 displays and it throws them around without a sweat. :D

I can get lite to work over WiFi but am having massive problems trying to get set up to use it over EDGE.

Anyone have any advice for setting up on an AirPort Extreme network? Couldn't find anything quickly on their website. Getting stuck at the Port Forwarding part. PM if you don't want to post out here. Thanks!

Ok, for all of you who are still having problems connecting outside your network, youtube has a step by step using no-ip and touchpad pro (teleport)

Make sure you view the "video response"....it shows you where you need to change the last 3 digits of the ip in Airport settings, and you should have no problem. If you pay real close attention during the "video reply" you will notice that one of the settings (checked box) he tells you to check in the original is unchecked on the update (as he is scrolling through the tabs)

I'm installing the free lite version now and if it's as good as the reviews i see here, I'll be willing to pay the $25 to get my home theatre system working. Right now, I'm plugging in a keyboard and mouse to my G4 Cube which is acting as my home server. Hope to change that in 24 hours.

Thanks for the reply and letting me know that Touchpad pro is Teleport Pro!!

I'm not quite sure how you would use this. I can think of a few instances i'd want to access my computer while out and about. Lets say I want to email a pdf to someone and that pdf is on my home computer, could i do this with this program? What if i had a layered photoshop file i wanted to show someone. Could this be viewed? Can you open Text Edit and write, then email that file?

This looks like a very useful and great App, and has introduced me to the VNC functionality available on computers.

I'm not greedy or anything, but if you're going to release a Lite version of a very feature-heavy App, atleast allow the user to left click. I got this App for free (thanks Arn!), so no complaints.

If he made the current free version 99 cents again, and added left click, THAT would sell alot.

Or make three versions, heh.

Yep, you can do anything like that.. I edited quite a chunk of a webpage over FTP with it using textwrangler on my iMac- it's really just seeing your desktop remotely.. You can copy/paste and everything. Excellent for remote maintainance - I got it for exactly the sorts of job you describe, even the layered photoshop thing. :)

Security / Encryption

How many of you are using Teleport over the 3G/EDGE network?

Anything sent across the internet with Teleport (passwords, etc.) is unprotected and could be intercepted by a third party. Someone could inspect the packets, spoof the iphone's mac address and take control of your machine.

Even this Macworld article about Teleport recommends against using it over the internet: http://www.macworld.com/article/134827/2008/08/teleportvnc.html

Like Mocha VNC, though, this version will not encrypt your sessions, so it’s best used in a local, behind-the-firewall, environment.

I tried the free version last night and loved it. I especially like the way the mouse is controlled over MochaVNC's method. I wanna buy the full version but it's not much good to me if it's not secure while away from home. Does any one know if encyption is in the works for a future update?

Or is there any way to hack in some sort of security? I doubt it. :(

The protocol used for VNC is unencrypted, and there is no support for it in the VNC standards. This means someone can interpret your data stream, or VNC password over an unsecured internet connection.

The way to get around this is to use a VPN so your traffic between the iPhone and your remote computer is encrypted. I've made quite a few posts about this in the many threads here about Teleport and VNC. Buy yourself a VPN router to replace whatever you've got right now and configure it correctly. There will be nothing to worry about after that.

Yeah your VPN router may support encryption but the Teleport client does not. Encrypted data packets are not interpreted by Teleport. Isn't a VPN router just a router with VPN client/server software built-in? What makes you think the connection to Teleport is secured across the internet? I want to believe but the Macworld article makes me nervous. I would buy this app instantly if I could guarantee security over 3G/EDGE.

From the topic in the other thread where I responded:

I think you don't quite understand VPNs correctly. If you have a VPN Router at home with a defined tunnel endpoint and you use your iPhone's VPN settings to connect to that tunnel endpoint, all traffic between your home network and the iPhone is encrypted *including* your Teleport and WinAdmin sessions.

Simply: On your iPhone, once connected to the VPN tunnel, the iPhone's VPN client Encrypts all outbound traffic. Your VPN Router at the Home or Office Decrypts it and allows it to proceed into the local network. Responses from your Desktop PC/Laptop are then Encrypted on the way out by your VPN Router, and Decrypted by the iPhone VPN client when received.

This shaky third party VPN business we were discussing above may have some leaks, but I dare anyone to retrieve any useful info from my hardware based VPN sessions.

Basically, Teleport and iPhone apps never see encrypted packets because they are decrypted at the point of reception by the iPhone VPN client. Same thing goes for your PCs behind the VPN Router at home. All they see and send are unencrypted data, the VPN Router and iPhone Client handle encryption/decryption transparently through the tunnel as long as you are logged into the VPN tunnel.

Ok, I thought Teleport was the iPhone VPN client, and that it didn't support encryption(again, going by the Macworld article). So there's actually a built-in VPN client in the iphone, which Teleport communicates with??

Also, that 8-port VPN router you're using (LINKSYS RV082) is pretty expensive($200+). Could I get the same results with something cheaper(LINKSYS WRV200)?: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124071

Ahhh, now I see the confusion:

VNC = Virtual Network Computing. A VNC client like Teleport can communicate with VNC Servers to interact with remote computers. VNC traffic (and any TCP/IP traffic) can be carried encrypted over a VPN tunnel and the client/server will not care, because the packets are encrypted/decrypted before the VNC client or server see them.

VPN = Virtual Private Network. Commonly used to secure data transmission between your device on the internet and a Local Area Network at your home or office. Data is encrypted before leaving your device and decrypted upon arrival at the LAN. Go into the iPhone "Settings" app and look for the VPN section right below Airplane Mode and WiFi. If you don't see it there, go down to General, then select Network, and you'll see VPN as an option there. Once you have at least one VPN configured it should show up in the first area below Wi-Fi.

The WRV200 will support what you want, a securely encrypted tunnel. Looking at the reviews I'd be a bit leery of going cheap just due to the complaints about stability and reboots of the router. I actually had an RV042 for a while that acted like that, which I replaced with the RV082 because it had a faster processor and twice the RAM. I think I just had too much traffic for the poor little RV042 to handle, but you might want to try one of those... might be more reasonably priced but more powerful than the consumer model you are considering.

Thank You!!

Ahhh, now I see the confusion:

.....

Wow, thanks! That post was amazingly helpful! I found the VPN settings in my iphone. So with the right hardware, after setting up a VPN tunnel the Teleport app can be secured over 3G/EDGE after all. Awesome!!! I am definitely buying this app now after I buy the router.

When I setup the VPN, would I need to keep changing the VPN settings on the iphone as my IP address changes at home? Do you think it could it be setup to use no-ip.com or something to monitor my IP address changes?

When setting up Teleport, do I set the program to point to the VPN on the phone or to the IP address at home? Do I set the VNC server on the computer to use the VPN or do I just forward port 5900 on router like usual? Basically how do you set the client and the server to use the new VPN tunnel? Sorry for all the questions but it's tough finding info about securing Teleport online.

I must have read things wrong, I took it that the full version was now free - it's still £15.99 on the UK store :(

Is it worth getting the lite version or not?

Cool, glad I was able to help you understand how this all works. Networking can get to be a prettty complex topic you know ;)

As for some of your other questions:
You can definitely use something like no-ip.com (Some of my clients are set up currently with http://www.dyndns.com, and I can hit their VPNs without having to know the IP). It makes things much easier, especially if you are getting new IPs regulary. My IP at home hasn't changed in almost 2 years, so I haven't bothered to set up my own account.

When you setup the computer to connect to with Teleport, it will be the same local IP whether you are in your house on WiFi or connected on the VPN. The VPN tunnel makes it just like you are in the house, giving you a local IP on your home network. That's another plus for the VPN, you don't need two connection entries for the same computer. To make things easier on yourself you might want to give your home PC a permanent IP instead of using DHCP too.

When connecting to your home PC with Teleport, you'll go into your "Settings" app on the iPhone first and connect to your VPN. Once it says "Connected", just press home, then start Teleport and select your PC from the list. Everything will be encrypted from there automatically, no need for additional settings in your VNC client or server. If you forget to connect to the VPN first you'll just time-out because the iPhone won't be able to find your PC (unless you're sitting at home on WiFi already), so no worries about forgetting it.

You do not want to port-forward 5900 on your new Router. That opens a hole from the internet that people can exploit. While connected to the VPN tunnel, your data will flow into the network without the need for forwarding ports. When disconnected from the tunnel, nothing can get into your home network.

Hope this doesn't confuse you at all, it's a lot of ground to cover with a few paragraphs :D
