TextNow: Unlimited Free Texting on Your iPhone or iTouch (Google Voice support too!)

Hi,

I am using Textnow lite, can you explain this situation:

I send a test sms through the program to an iPhone right next to me to test the program.

The other iphone receives it.

BUT

when I do a test reply with the iphone that just received my text, nothing happens.

It doesn't go to the program nor does it go to the SMS.

What's the deal?

The server for TextNow Lite is being hammered at the moment due to unexpected increase in traffic during the holiday season. We are doing our best to get this problem resolved ASAP. (TextNow should be working normally though)

hey thanks for the quick reply.

I also had a few more questions:

Does the lite version expire since it doesn't have a lifetime subscription? In other words, does it end in 3 months?

How does one purchase the lifetime subscription for the textnow after purchasing the .99 cent app?
 
Derek, I'm glad to see that you have added a new free version to the app store. I have always been hesitant to try these SMS apps because I don't think I'll really like the way they work. (occasional lag, having everyone else set up my name again with an email, etc). But I always wanted to try yours because it looks better than pinger to me and I always like supporting my MacRumors family (is that sad that I feel like I have a connection to you? haha).

I'm trying it now and if I like it I will definitely buy the full version :)

Oh and I see that the lite version is having troubles due to the holiday season, so I'll take note of that

It's been going strong since it was brought back online this morning. I rarely have issues. I also run everything through Google Voice. Which means my messages are always there, even if they don't pop up in textnow.
 
First impression review:

The good
I really like a lot of features it has. The picture by the name, backgrounds, and my favorite, personalized tones for different ppl. It is very intuitive and well put together

The not so good
I won't be too hard on this, but I have been having issues with the server and etc. Texts won't send, or I won't receive them, or something of the sort. It was also difficult to monitor because I'm not with the person I'm testing it with. But again I'll default that you agreed there were issues and it is the lite version.

The bad
Unfortunately this may keep me from getting the app until a clear resolution can be made. the load time is frustratingly long. When I receive a text, I unlock my phone, wait for the app to load, then wait for the app to refresh, then click on the conversation I want to respond to... The whole process (on my 3g) takes about 10 seconds. Not horrible, but I text far too much to allow these load times.

I will continue to test it and see how it goes :)

I believe I purchased my app at $4.99 or $5.99 and it was lifetime. The "lifetime" option as well as yearly and quarterly are fairly new. I purchased it at 3.x i think. Not too long ago. Prior to the change they were all lifetime.

Yeah so have I. I have the paid version and have not been getting text that are sent to me. I e-mailed them yesterday and it seems that they are having server troubles due to heavy unexpected holiday loads.

I'm sure they are hard at work to get it fixed!
And I have to say, the support from Enflick is great! I had an e-mail response within 5 minutes!
 
Not sure whats going on, since yesterday when i get a text from my fiance it doesnt show her name anymore, it shows her number@txt.bell.ca and she is not doing anything different and it was working fine for the longest time.

Yeah the odd thing I have noticed is that I can send text and receive text by sending text to and fro my gmail email account.
But when I send a text to an ATT phone number, the message never arrives and messages sent from ATT phone numbers to my TextNow address never arrive.

Hope the server upgrade fixes it all...but i'm sure they are on top of it!
 
I would expect different servers for the paid and lite versions. but with the recent server problems for paid users after the introduction of the lite version, the two programs must share the same servers, which is a pity...
 
Any word on getting the server fixed? I am still getting the "Could not connect to server" message error. I hope they do put paid members on a dedicated server of their own. I'm sure we're happy to pay for server costs.

Actually I think you hit it right on. I like the program and fast support so much I think I wouldn't second guess giving a donation to keep things super fast! I'm sure there are tons of users with me on this.
 
Server Issues

Just want to give everyone an update. We have been working around the clock to improve our infrastructure to support the higher load on our servers. We are getting very close to stabilizing the service and at the moment things should be working quite well.

In terms of the separation of the lite and paid app servers, we do in fact have dedicated servers for both versions, but the increased loads hit both versions quite hard.

We sincerely apologize for the frequent interruptions in service in the past several days, and we appreciate your patience and understanding.

Derek. It has become very frustrating... server connection problems all the time now...
 
Does the Messagenow program work on the same server as the other texting apps? If so you should ditch that program since it's not making you any money. Textnow Lite should be getting you all the customers you need to convert over to Textnow.

Messages are getting lost completely when I checked friends phones, at least 5-6 messages were missing from our conversations.
