We're going to have to disagree on this one. I think this would be pretty easy to fake. I can think of several ways already. One that would make the videography easy (at the expense of more prep) is to embed a wireless receiver of some kind inside the monitor's shell. I've never tried to fake anything before but I think I could whip up something like that in a few hours.

No one with the technical know-how to do something like that is deprived enough to fake something like that.

I take it that you don't believe ANYthing until Apple releases it, right?

Did you believe that the leaked unibody shells were fake?

Don't be a moron. He was using a figure of speech; as in, "Let just say..."
Obviously.

One simply mentioned the subway statement because I assumed that monthy did have control over the box as he had it in his hands on video.

And sir, I'm no moron.

This is sports for geeks! It's amazing how fired up people are getting over a "rumor". You will find out soon enough whether this is real. Do something more constructive with your Saturday night.

Funny, that you would waste your Saturday night JOINING a forum just to post that.

Your argument is rendered null and void by your name and your actions in posting. Sorry.

I don't understand this view. I think faking a monitor's source on video is much simpler than faking a prototype.

It wouldn't have to be a wireless receiver. It could be a cable snaked in through the base and the tabletop, or piggybacked on the power cable. Or an otherwise normal cable could be bluescreened out or something.

Since some have already accused him of faking the prototype (or whatever it is) I'm not sure how much extra depravation is needed.

I take it that you don't believe ANYthing until Apple releases it, right?

Whoa now. I don't have a horse in this race. I'm just watching from the sidelines.

I don't know what to believe. I'm just pointing out that if Monthy provided such a video that plenty of people here would shoot it down as a fake. (I'm not necessarily saying you would shoot it down. I don't really know you.)

You didn't ask what I hope, which is a different thing from belief, but I'll tell you anyway. I think that Core 2 Duo, GeForce 9400M, dual display support, superdrive, 5xUSB, Firewire, and the current case design is close to ideal, so long as it remains virtually silent and they don't price it too high. If this is how it turns out, I'll buy a few. I don't think Monthy said anything about the 9400M but at least he did specify C2D, which would mean no Atom. I still worry that Apple may choose Atom, which I would consider less than ideal.

If you care, here are my thoughts on the current Mini.

Did you believe that the leaked unibody shells were fake?

Sorry, I must have missed those. I usually follow macrumors somewhat regulary, but sometimes when I'm busy I get behind. Leaked unibody shells don't ring a bell.

Wait'll...

Wait'll he posts a video of it booted up and playing a Blu-ray disc...

:apple:

[edit: Why does the forum indicate that there is a page 15 when I can't go there? Trying to go there yields page 14 (this page). I noticed the same thing with earlier pages several times yesterday. Eventually the problem resolves--presumably after more posts have been added.]
Happens to me several times too. I think the reply count in the main MacRumors.com page sidebar shows something higher than the actual # of replies (and is high enough to otherwise go onto page 15).

MacOSX.org G4 Spy Photos (Some things never change.)

Hey guys. Thought I'd chime in on this one. Some of you may remember me from MacOSX.org back in the day. We ran those "Fake" G4 spy photos that ended up being the real deal. We were attacked and ridiculed until we were slashdotted, featured on CNN and G4 Tech TV, etc. Even AFTER all that, the same ol' yahoo's hated on us. But eventually MacWorld 2000 came and we were vindicated. Ya know what happened? People STILL thought they were fake!

I dunno why people would fake such a thing, and if they do, shame on them. I just thought it was incredibly funny that we've gone all this time and nothing has changed. People DO leak things from Apple, they DON'T always get caught, and they WON'T necessarily be able to do a darn thing about it. Everyone seems to be an expert on this subject, but until you've gone toe to toe with Apple Legal, I suggest you "cease and desist" just wait for the reveal.

For nostalgia's sake:

hhmmm still looks fake to me, apple would DEFINETLY not just whack a few more ports on and be happy. the product is a good 3-4 years old and hasnt had an upgrade in forever.

i believe that they will follow the new colour scheme/look of the MBP's, MB's and iMac. black, glass and graphite/silver. :)

How long has the Mac Pro/ G5 and design been around?
How long was the PB G4 / MacBook Pro design around for?

They may well redesign it as they have a new look. But they may not.

yes but how often did they upgrade the machines you named? one, two, three, four times a year? this hasnt been upgraded for a LONG LONG time. that leads me to think they would re-design the whole thing..

or lets say I do not have it at all, I just got these pictures somewhere. And if all of you are asking to plug it in, I am not doing it as I cannot. Sorry guys....

But, that's odd then. Since in the photo he showed us it WAS plugged in (at least there was a power cord connected - for some reason). So WHY when he makes the video a day later is he 'unable' to plug it in?

Seriously ...

monthy I'd be a little pissed. People are mean. Does arguing whether or not this video and photo's authenticity really make the other posters feel better?

Thank you monthy. I appreciate all you went through to post this. Even if I am completely wrong and you somehow faked the video, I enjoy the tidbit of something to chew on until we see what Apple really released.

Shame on those of you that incessantly badger this man to further prove his legitimacy. That is all I have to say

Even though it might be fake, I think the best thing that could have happen, was to get newsed on the various sites with much attention of the apple-fans... As we know apple notices the rumors sites (otherwise steve wouldn't have been pissed on one of the keynotes when a new product leaked (don't know anymore with one it was)) so this might once again show them how interested we all are to get a new mac mini and how much revenue they would dismiss by not updating the mini...
Either way I think it was good that the photo got so much attention.

Obviously.

One simply mentioned the subway statement because I assumed that monthy did have control over the box as he had it in his hands on video.

And sir, I'm no moron.

From what I've understood from his posts, he didn't claim to be an Apple employee but just a simple "Apple fan", bought it from someone and has acknowledged the possibility of the box being a prototype.

Thus from his claims, he should very well have the box in his hands, the fact that he claims that he cannot "plug it in" and show it to us in its functioning form clearly proves...

It's all trash.

Turn It Over...

Hey Monthy,

provide us another video and turn it over.. ..also, by now you have opened it up or tried it (and I know I would've!).. ..why no more info?? internal shots??

I'm a bit amused by all this skepticism monthy has received. Let's break it down:

- The picture.
His (let's assume he is male) picture of the mini is probably not the same that his camera made. He has probably cropped, resized and adjusted colors / levels of the original pic, which explains the JPG artefacts and the uneven noise distribution. The variations on the highlights on the USB ports, the consistent change in perspective and the direction of the shades are absolutely natural looking. If this was really photoshopped, I have to say "hats off".

- There are gaps in his story.
What do you expect? "Someone at Apple asked me to leak this information in a way that they can deny it if they want." "I stole this prototype by accident and am stupid enough to make it public on a high profile web site." Whatever the real story is, I'm sure monthy has good reasons not to tell it.

- The specs. 5 USB ports? But my iMac has only 3!
Apple Inc, in ways far too difficult for us mortals to comprehend, sometimes takes criticism to heart and improves products according to their critics. iPhone Apps are no longer web-based, MacBooks and iMacs are highly recycleable, Leopard's dock can be made to look 2-dimensional, and now Apple might have realized that users need more than 4 USB ports on a mini, especially after bad reviews on the MacBooks. Is this really so incredible?

- It looks like the old mini, except for the ports.
Get over it. Apple redesigns products when they feel they have to. Not when macrumors users say it's time.

I thank you dear sir, for saving a lot of time by explaining this, so the line up of stupid questions can be reduced... :)
Edit: better said, spot on mate
