You're defeating your own argument with that link.

Look at the back panel of that real-life mac mini clone...

Its a Hard drive enclosure, besides it was on one of many examples of closures/clones I've seen both here in the UK and in places like Romania. My point is that something just doesn't sit right with the video or the photo.

It could be a mod using clone parts or several mac minis I don't know but it something doesn't sit right.

It wasn't an argument to be honest more a statement that I personally don't feel 100% convinced.

It just looks like a prototype. It doesn't look like a hard drive enclosure. Do you think he would spend all that time modifying a hard drive enclosure to look like it is a new Mini?

Unspectacular

Although the photo and video do seem convincing, I still hope very much that it doesn't show the new Mac Mini.

Apple is famous for their reality distortion fields surrounding new product launches, and even if it turns out to be a collection of unremarkable changes in hind sight, new features usually still collectively impress with a lasting legacy, like dropping the floppy drive, or adding a built in iSight camera. Added ports don't seem to be able to provide that type of attraction.

This picture/video doesn't show any features you would notice using the computer which is why I'm just hoping this leak is phoney.

Here is my wish list:
- 1TB drive (so I don't need to think about drive space for the next few years)
- front USB port (I leave my iPod cables in my desk drawer)
- Built in power supply.
- a provision that would allow the Mac Mini to be mounted on the underside of a desk.

Uh... a video that does exactly what I just said? That, I would believe.

You have it plugged in. You have the monitor plugged in. You have the computer plugged into the monitor. You turn on the computer. You plug in peripherals. You open Apple System Profiler.

I see absolutely no merit in your argument. All that he has to do is zoom out and show that the monitor is only connected to the Mac Mini.

Think about things. It isn't that hard.

As easy as it is to fake, it's even easier to do it NOT faked.

Honestly, I don't think you would believe anything he posted. If he did make a video and flimed one frame angle wrong you would instantly call it a fake. The only way you would believe it is if you filmed it yourself.

Im not saying that I believe it is real, just saying that at this point, no matter what he did, I don't think you would believe it to be real either.

Nope, I'd pretty much believe him if he did just what I said.

Plug in a display, plug in a FireWire peripheral, show us the Profiler with the specs, never cut away from the scene.

If he can do that, it's real.

If not, it's fake. It's easy for you to make accusations, because he hasn't actually done it.

you can get this from macsales.com for the current provision, looks pretty decent

Thanks! But I'm not investing into any extras for my G4 Mac mini and it's not really that necessary. Also I usually don't buy that kind of extras since it takes away from the Apple design.

However it is good to know that there are so many extras available for Apple products.

I'm really curious what the next Mac mini is going to offer! I hope it will be big news like being a VESA mount stand so you can attach any LCD screen. A DIY iMac - with holes that could also be used to mount/stack the Mac mini for people building server farms.

If this rumour substantiates itself (same enclosure, extra ports), well - that would disappoint me.

usb ports?

FAKE!! Gotta be, 5 USB ports!?!?!? My iMac has 3, how many do you need? Or is this just a photoshop mockup?

How many???????? Besides the Mighty Mouse, lack of USB ports is the single dummest thing that Apple continue to baffle me with!!!!!!

I have a Mac Mini, with 4 USB ports. I have an apple aluminium keyboard, with 2 ports. I have a LaCie HardDisk, with 4 ports. I have a 7-way USB hub too.
Total = 4+2+4+7-3 = 14 ports.

With everything plugged in, I currently have ONE spare USB port. Yes, ONE!!
I can't believe how silly having THREE ports on an iMac is. Look at all that space!!!! If I was Steve Jobs, I would put 6 on the back, 4 on one side and 2 on the other.
If it was me personally, I'd have eight or ten, with a little cable tidy system on the back of the stand ;P

Case is new too!

Huh? The back panel is an easy replacement. You can physically put anything you want back there, and it's cake to look real if you don't change the rest of the case.

But getting the ports to work is another matter.

It doesn't really matter, because if it IS real, SOMEONE will get fired and this thing will be put back in Apple's hands.

Anyone who owns a Mac Mini would have immediately spotted that the entire casing shown in this video is different. He has not simply put some new internals on the back of an old Mini. I am staring at a current Mac Mini now and it has much sharper edges, is less shiny and a slightly different colour.

Credit to Monthy, I think it's either a real Apple unreleased product or a prototype. If it's not then someone spent a very long time making a fake.

You didn't sign an NDA but you knowingly took a product that Apple has under a strict NDA agreement. By knowingly saying this you have admitted that you are trying to weasel yourself out of possible infringement by Apple. Eitherway, turn it on and post specs, you don't need to ask anyone, you already broke the law. Might as well make it worth something. I'd rather get my ass sued off and be believable, than get my ass sued off and have people doubt me. Eitherway, your either stupid and lying, or getting sued. Make it count, turn it on.

He never said the guy actually sold the thing to him, maybe he gave him $20 to take a picture? Or to take it home for a couple days?

I didn't think that there was anyone left as trusting as this.

Or, at least, anyone who thought that people in general were as trusting as this.

Stupid postmodern society...:(

Heck, I trust everyone I meet, until they give me a decent reason not to. Why be pessimistic when you can be optimistic? Always give people the benefit of the doubt. Should really go to bed now anyhow, as it's 3.30am UK time...
Ciao.

Apples strategy is plain and simple. We make the best OS, the Best Computers, and offer the best Service.

You pay to play. Apple has never been interested in people looking for a bargain or scrounging together a computer. They are the BMW of computers and they have the product and attitude to go with it. I like that too. I am glad Apple's market share isn't with everyone in the universe. Owning an Apple is something you can still be proud of. Apple charges you for the quality and time in there products. If you want a cheap computer... Buy an Emachine with Windows. You get what you pay for.

I know this will fall on deaf ears. But, while I agree with you on a couple points. Being a Apple Certified Warranty Technician I can you that:

They make the best OS. Plain and simple. Well... for consumers. FreeBSD is pretty bad ass. :)

They don't make the "best" computers. Depends on what you are looking for in a computer. There are much higher spec'd computers out there. For less. Just not with OSX. Which is a big negative. People always say "Macs are more expensive" But, I would factor 100 to 200 dollars more just for using OSX. Which makes it pretty even or cheaper.

Their service is outwardly excellent. But, wait till you have a non-recall with a "should be" recall issue or are clumsy with it. OR you need Enterprise level service. HA. Try to get any Enterprise level service even if you manage 1000 Xserves. They have nothing for you. Bet on that. NOTHING. You want image deployment and management?? They direct you to third party support. InstaDMG they say. HA! If you want the best warranty in the industry (But, a fairly crap computer) go to Dell. With CompleteCare you could slam it against a pole or chuck it off a building and they will replace it. (Believe me, or don't. I am a Dell Warranty Parts Direct Technician as well. WPD rocks!) OR if there are any driver issues with BootCamp. HAHA. They tell you it's Microsoft's fault. EVEN their techs; they will tell that.

Working at an Apple Store is NOT working at Apple. Whoever thinks that is fooling themselves. Apple Geniuses have no room for growth. 32K a year. Forever. No not really, but don't even think that you will move to corporate. Ever. Haha. So, whoever says they work for Apple and work at their retail stores is full of ****. They don't know crap. Yeah, they can log into gsx.apple.com. But, that's the closest they get to Cupertino. (Well, except to get certified.) Which is amazing that they do that. I might add. :)

AND I hope they are not the BMW of computers. Have you seen an X6? or driven one? Gawd! They have really fallen off the wagon. No pun intended. Try a Lotus or Alfa then come talk to me. WHICH ARE Cheaper/Same price. Best "OS". :)

Long winded. But, starting to piss me off. Blah Blah Blah. "I know how Apple works! Blah Blah" I don't even pretend to know. I don't know crap and I have a fraction more knowledge than most. I gots no ideas! :p

The above poster's experiences are in line with my own. And yes, there's nothing :apple: like Completecare <3.

Hiya, I'm hoping to get a macmini in the near future as soon as the update comes out. My current mac is a powerbook 1400cs with OS8! I was wondering if the current mac mini can be stood on it's side (i think not) and was wondering whether this might be a design change for the next version, maybe one that stands on it's side like other basic pcs (dell, eee pc), anyone else think Apple might go down this route? thoughts?

yes it can be put on its side, but it doesnt look as good obviously..

Yeah, but anything can be put on it's side, doesn't mean it's designed to be used that way! Mac mini's got rubber feet on bottom that would stick out surely? I just reckon this will be designed into the next mini. Mac wii stylee.

baha true, good point. wouldnt look very good would it. still possible though.

Yeah but if it is designed in, then you could have it in that vertical configuration (smaller desktop footprint, and some people do prefer it...) BUT just like the wii you wouldn't need to have it like that and have it flat if you wanted. I think with the rest of the market having this type of vertical configuration Apple will follow.

yea i donno though.. doesnt appeal to me but i guess it would to others which is fair enough.

maybe they could make a mini MacPro??

I wouldn't be surprised. Again I wouldn't say its a hard drive enclosure, to me it looks like a mac mini mod. I know people who've done that for sh*ts and giggles.

If it is a prototype then great, but I'm just saying i'm not sure it is.

Besides if it is a prototype and its just housed in a standard case, then its not really that interesting until he boots it up.
