I'm hoping this happens soon. I am on the fence about storage solutions and am leaning toward a mini backed up to a TC as my media server rather than a NAS.

My luck is that I would buy a mini and a few days later a new one would come out!

I do not want to read this entire thread, cliff notes anyone?

Someone sums up ideas of new mini > people discuss it > someone post a picture of something that could be the new mini > people either bash or praise it > some person then post some video of something that could be the new mini > people either bash or praise it > pictures of cats looking through screensavers start to get posted > end as of 2/28

Read through this interesting thread.

The video looks real. And I like the concept.

However, my guess is that this was a prototype or modification and not what will be released.

Gut feeling is that the new Mac Mini will be built like the MB/MBP construction. It will be all aluminum and thinner than the old version.

The reason for my gut feeling is the time lag. We have been waiting long time. This would suggest a much different Mac Mini to include a new form factor and design.

Anyhow, thanks Monthy for sharing.

Totally agree. This is a real... prototype. Probably somewhat different from what the final product will be. A similar story like this:

Personally, my main concern is that the mini keeps firewire.

What is the likelihood that the new Mac Mini may be released alongside the new iMac? I recently purchased the Mac Mini as a HTPC with Plex installed and intended to use it up until the new mini is released which I hope is soon so I can swap this one.

I'd say it was likely, I was saying similar the other day, just simply because it would be a big launch to do that without Jobs being there, which would instill confidence in AAPL . Now if they did SL at the same time too.....

When do you all assume this might happen? Mid-March or later?

Me , anytime in the next couple of weeks, probably sooner .

I sincerely hope so, if only to put an end to some of the frustrations that are evident by the bitchyness that is apparent on the forum the last week or so as this thing go's on and on and on ....come on Apple for our sake if no one else's eh?

Not sure.

I get the feeling that Apple likes to release things over time to keep the interest stoked.

So I would say no this time.

Which is first, the iMac or the Mac Mini? Who knows. It seems other sites think the iMac.

In the back of my mind, I believe the new Mac Mini will be more than just a computer. Apple is making good money on the iTMS. The problem for users is where to store their music and videos. I believe that it would be in Apple's best interest to make a consumer level home server that works seamlessly with the iTMS and iTunes.

Call it a gut feeling, but I see some sort of combination of functions with a Mac Mini, Apple TV, time capsule and home RAID device.

Does anyone think the new iMac will share the same design as the new 24" Cinema Display? I'm hoping the iMac drops the chin, has the thinner pedestal of the Cinema Display, is thinner and possibly has an SSD for a high-end add-on.

It seems Apple could have issued a slight update to the iMac much sooner, I believe the delay is because of these "major" design changes.

Why not just take the insides of the high-end MacBook Air and put it behind a 20" screen? Would it make the iMac much thinner?

Yes, but will slightly thicker because it will incorporate a docking slot for the soon to be released Mac tablet (or maybe a touch/iPhone variation)

I agree the wait is because of the design changes and massive marketing push that will come with these new iMacs /'docking tablets'.

just a wild(ish) guess I suppose :) , I'm wondering though if the new Mini will be this new device I haven't thought this out yet...

....I need more sleep:eek:

I don't care about the SSD but do think they should drop the chin and go for the LED cinema display look.

Wouldn't we still see a speed increase?
Probably not.

Definitely would need to do some tests to find out for sure since data throughput in a system is based upon more than just HD speed or type.

At this time, cost is definitely a consideration. At this time you can purchase a lot more storage space for cheaper via rotating media for the desktop.

Little addendum here:

Notice that I have not updated the first post to reflect these newest happenings.

This is because I think that they are crap. Plus, I have already mentioned everything recent in the first post.

Really, the only things that I don't believe will happen are the Mini DVI/Mini DisplayPort combo and the lack of a redesign.

Since these recent mockups refuse to tell us anything about the hardware–the important part–we can still safely assume that the hardware in the first post is correct.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled current-rumor insane ramblings.

Out of curiosity:

Which parts do you think are crap? The videos, pic of the mini that monthy has posted? The specs that are rumored? The rumor of the updated mini dropping tomorrow? Which parts?

I just want to make certain which bits you're disputing/disbelieving.
