Fergie did go out on top, at least. I doubt he'd have won another title again if he's stuck around longer, with the Glazer-induced rot truly setting in to the club and the competition from city in particular getting stronger and stronger. There was also David Gill's departure, opening the door for Ed Woodward's disastrous footballing decisions.

Fergie certainly went out on top, though had he stayed any longer he was facing another rebuild, and as you say the club's trajectory was already moving in the wrong direction behind him.

United have a real gem in Kobbie Mainoo. Put him and Bellingham together in midfield for England — what a tantalizing prospect.

United finally fielded their strongest starting XI last night, and they looked the part in the first half. When ETH went to the bench, the trouble really kicked off. That Antony signing looks worse and worse every day.

Mainoo was born in 2005, which makes me feel positively ancient.

Jurgen Klopp flopped he a bottle job. Little bit of pressure and this guy folds. Klopp KNOWS Utd will get better and City look STRONG.
Your words come across as a bit harsh but there could be an element of truth to what you say in that Klopp is finding it difficult to compete against City for the league title and thus see's no point in trying to continue in trying to dethrone City.

Aston Villa are having an exceptionally good season; after today's thrashing of Sheffield United, Villa are now lying in fourth place in the table, with the same number of points, wins, and draws as both Manchester City (yes, City!) and Arsenal who lie in second and third place just above them.

Liverpool, (who play Arsenal tomorrow), are, of course, still top.

Arsenal up 1-0 early. Right now Liverpool look like they are going to lose today - no pressure on the Arsenal goal, and the gunners are beating us down the wings for pace.

No Mo, but more importantly no Darwin - Arsenal are still a team that can be knocked off their game by a guy like Nunez playing target man and I feel he is sorely missed today.

Klopp is going to have to change something and I hope Liverpool’s knack for winning second halves happens here. But his options on the bench are relatively thin.

If Robertson is truly ready to play he needs to come in possibly even at the half to provide more service on the left. Gravenberch looks blunt on the right. We need to get Jota and Diaz receiving balls closer to the Arsenal goal.

Arsenal won’t be able to keep this blistering pace up for 90, so if the damage is just the one goal it’s still a very tight contest and we’ll see where we’re at around the 60 minute mark. But first Liverpool need to make it to the half.

Currently losing 1-0 at Old Trafford. We never win there.
Phillips benched.
That ended three nil to Manchester United, in one of those bizarre days where everything went right for them.

Elsewhere, Wolves demolished Chelsea by four goals to two.

And yes, we currently lead Liverpool by a goal to nil at the Emirates, approaching half time.

Damn and double damn.

We have just conceded an own-goal right on the stroke of half time.

I knew that this was too good to last.
A calamitous OG from Gabriel, slapping the ball into his own net after Diaz’ persistent run from a Gravenberch threaded pass. A really unlucky one for Arsenal.

If Nunez is even half-fit I’d still bring him on, ‘Pool are struggling to break Arsenal down. Lots of game left here and it could go either way.

I know you have no love lost for City (well the owners). So really the best result is a Liverpool win really.

As for our game I’m not surprised in the least.
No.

The best result is an Arsenal win.

Now, after today, yes, I shall cheer Liverpool on, and hope (devoutly) for their success.

Meanwhile, at the Emirates, Arsenal (once again) have taken the lead by two goals to one.

Re the OG, increasingly it looks as though Raya (whom I am not at all comfortable with between the sticks) may have been at fault, although the ball did hit Gabriel's arm.

I think City were the real winners of the Arsenal and Liverpool match.

Should make for an interesting run in for the next few months.
I think that you are winding up both @Lord Blackadder and I with this post.

Anyway, a pleased Gunner here, after a nerve-wracking match.

I had thought that we might manage a draw, but didn't expect - hadn't expected - such a convincing win.

I'll happily cheer for Liverpool's challenge for the title any time after today (for yes, I desperately, devoutly, passionately, want anyone other than Manchester City to claim the Premier League this season).

Not really. If Liverpool had won, they would have more of a lead over City. Now if City win their 2 games in hand they are top.

Indeed.

However, Liverpool will have to find ways to extend their lead somewhere else, (and I shall support their endeavours to do so), and, I imagine that the departure of Klopp this coming summer might serve as a motivation.

Much though I detest Manchester City, (and I do, heartily), one can hardly expect me to call for the defeat of my own club.

Anyway, Arsenal played well, and were impressively solid in defence.

Still not convinced by Raya (but the defence ensured that he wasn't troubled all that much).

Congrats to the Gunners, Arsenal played well and Liverpool did 'OK' but not good enough. I felt we were doing quite well recently without Salah, but without Sala or Nunez today Liverpool looked blunt against a very good Arsenal team.

This was not a fun match to watch. Not just because we lost, but it felt from minute one that no matter what happened, the end result would be the same - Man City's already very healthy odds of winning the title would increase substantially.

And yeah, I would disagree that this makes the league more interesting, at least in terms of the title race. It's Man City's to lose, now more than ever. They have the biggest, best, and healthiest squad at this crucial moment in the season, they will win their games in hand, and that will more or less be that. If you look at their record in recent years they almost never give away a lead at this point in the season.

I've been saying all along Man City will win the title, and pretty much all the (serious) pundits have been saying the same. A Liverpool win today would not have changed my mind on that either, but this result just makes me feel that much more pessimistic. If Liverpool had a 6-10 point advantage over Man City right now I might feel different.

Last year, at around this time of the year, we had (enjoyed?) a six plus point advantage over Manchester City, but nevertheless, they still managed to win the Premier League.

Still, while Liverpool might have lacked Salah, and Nunez, we were without Gabriel Jesus, (not to mention Thomas Partey - who, when he plays, something that is an increasingly rare sight, is superb, - and I would love to see him alongside Declan Rice - but, as was acerbically observed on an Arsenal site, "he's made of glass" for he has missed chunks - sometimes, major chunks - of each season ever since he arrived at Arsenal) and sundry others, such as Jurrien Timber, who has been out of action since he was injured on his debut last August.

While I would love to see Liverpool capture the title (well, I'd love to see Arsenal do this, too, but somehow, cannot see it happening), alas, I do think it increasingly likely that Manchester City will peak just as spring arrives.

The years Liverpool were chasing City for the title I know fans of Man United and Chelsea who said would want their team to lose against Liverpool if it meant them being able to stop City winning the league.

Very good effort by Man Utd today. Højlund looks like he's finally at home in the PL. Garnacho still lively and productive — is the last still only 19? — and more calm, matura play from Mainoo. The only downer is the knee injury to a luckless Licha, and it looked pretty bad. Rashford is back to running into cul-de-sacs, too. Not great from him.

The title race is still pretty open. I know city will turn it on and probably pull through yet again, but Arsenal and Liverpool both have more than a faint chance at it.

Højlund does extremely well when he is given service, something United have been struggling to do for months.
