Never thought I'd find myself praising Chelsea, but their defence was dogged, heroic, unsparing - actually, quite incredible - today.

They held Manchester City to a draw, while surviving (and repelling) what must have seemed like a thousand (increasingly driven) attacks.

How do you feel about ex US president Barack Obama being a fan? According to those in the know, he got to liken the club due to English relatives he has. Apparently is stems from a visit he made to the UK to visit his England based half sister. During his stay his English relatives talked up how good the fan base of West Ham is and Obama being a sports nuts took a fancy to the club.
That’s fine. He was at least an elected leader. Not one who is in a position because of some archaic notion of kings and queens.

Chelsea stopped attacking at min 50min making it easy for City to default to their usual game of trying to breakdown low-blocks which inevitably means they come back
Yes, Chelsea's late game substitutions made it clear that defence was all that they had on their mind.

That was unfortunate, because their attacks did unsettle Manchester City.

Moreover, City's attack, while relentless, was also almost comically inept at times; it is not often that you see Haaland failing to put away clear chances.

Defending does not require the same amount of energy as attacking does both physically and mentally. Whilst us mere mortals believe these very highly paid footballers should be able to run around a pitch for a full 90mins because of extremely highly paid they are, I believe managers know when their players are in the process of getting tired, more so than any of us are able to thus they will make substitutions that would allow the team to defend a lead now matter how slender it is. City would have to be the ones to exert more energy due to having to attack. This was one of the things Alex Ferguson was famed for during his formative years at United, getting the players super fit that they could keep running and running for the full 90 mins.

I believe Chelsea's manager knew his players were not fit enough to keep their attacks going so he resorted to the team to defend the lead they had hopping it would pay off.

Jota, Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, and Jones are all going to miss the League Cup final with injuries. Nunez is a slight doubt. Szoboszlai is available but not fully match fit.

With a full strength side Liverpool would be favorites but given the injuries and Chelsea’s unpredictable nature the final is really a toss-up.

In other news, the MLS referees union have rejected a proposed deal for renewing their collective bargaining agreement. The league will be starting up using scabs, so the standard of reffing will drop from ‘mediocre at best’ to ‘bad.’

I am in sympathy with the referee union….considering the growth of the league and the publicly visible nature of their job, their compensation is not overly generous (some of the proposed ‘raises’ are not even keeping up with inflation). Messi makes more salary while having a sneeze than the refs do in a year.

Maybe Tuchel just isn’t the man for the job there.

The rumor is Jota has suffered cruciate ligament damage to his knee. Best case scenario has him out until mid April….best case. Allegedly they’ve ruled out an ACL tear but that hasn’t been confirmed.

Why do football fans do this? when a team is playing well and scoring goals nothing is said but as soon as a dry spell occurs out comes the remarks that the team is no good or the manager is no good.

When Kane moved to Bayern he has frequently been banging in goals for them. The team now has a dry spell and all of a sudden people are basically saying Kane is no good and Tuchel is no good. So both of them are suddenly no good when the team is not winning??? is that how it really works with fans these days?

I've never been that way. Yes I will make comments if a team loses but when a team is going through a bad spell but I do not go around saying that a good player is now suddenly bad or a good manager is suddenly bad because they lose.

For the record, me either...

But alas it is not the way for much of the rest of the world...

You are right.

I had forgotten those.

Tbh i'm surprised Kompany still has the job, i want him to succeed but its clear he's going to take Burnley down.
I'd love to see him succeed, also.
Of course. I knew there must be someone I was forgetting.
I had completely forgotten all about them, as well.

I had a vague memory that someone had been fired, ages ago, but couldn't recall just who it had been.

Talking about sackings, David Moyes of West Ham could on his way out because I read a BBC article this morning about the recent goings on in football and it mentions that West Ham bosses are putting a short list of managers names together to replace Moyes. Even though he got the club winning a European trophy, it seems to me everything went wrong when they lost to Liverpool in the quarter final of the EFL cup because I remember reading articles about the match and how angry West Ham fans were. But now it seems the club is having it's own Bayern Munich moment, a number of losses in a row and now they looking towards sacking the manager.

They would be idiotic to sack the best manager they have had in decades.
