Southgate has gone all-in defending Maguire. And he's not entirely wrong...a lot of the abuse directed at Maguire is exaggerated and meme-culture-toxicity. And some of it is down to how Southgate chooses to employ him. One thing the English media and fans tend to do is find a hate figure and scapegoat them, while remaining blind to systemic issues (harder to criticize than a person). They're not alone in that, but Maguire has become a giant lightning rod.

At the end of the day he's what he always had been - a solid, but unexceptional (at the elite level) center back, who wins a lot of headers but lacks pace and is not ideally suited to playing with the ball at his feet all the time.

In an alternate universe he'd be playing for a side like West Ham, getting plenty of minutes, still earning England caps, playing the same as he is now but not getting half as much criticism. His move to Man Utd was a bad idea for all parties. Square peg, round hole. Though Maguire will earn a pile out of it anyway.
Couldn’t agree more. The press loves to build up a player, then tare them down again.
I suspect he’ll move on sooner rather than later and hopefully he can restart his career somewhere.
In other news not looking forward to playing City this weekend. I’d be ecstatic with a draw!

UEFA needs a Maps app.

FYI, the tweet (or xeet) says something like "Soon the Light will illuminate itself" and it's a play on Benfica's stadium being called "Estádio da Luz" or "Stadium of Light"

Certainly some English fans will recognize this fine stadium

I will admit it's a somewhat easy error to make.

Certainly puts 98% of the premier leagues stadiums to shame and 100% of the rest.

oh and Sancho just cannot help himself can he. Turns out he was asked to submit a public apology for basically publicly calling his manager a liar (saying Sancho training was not up standard with Sancho saying it is not true) and he's refused to do so. Some football writers are saying this is now the end for Sancho.

Potential good news, in a - so far - catastrophic season:

Gone have the days where clubs were owned by owners who love football. Now they are being owned by investment companies and individuals who's sole purpose is for investment reasons. A continuing sad day for football.

Well, since 777 Partner group already controls Genoa, Sevilla, Vasco da Gama, Hertha Berlin, Standard Liège, Red Star in France and Melbourne Victory, they seem to be a bit interested in football... ;)

See if Spanish Women shows up here in Sweden next week for the National League game against our team. This far it seems very chaotic in women’s football in Spain, so doubtful.

It’s not only about the 'kiss' but about all the macho infrastructures of all Women’s football in Spain, and women’s sport in general it seems too.
Will be expensive for the players if they don’t play the games though - big penalties for the players.

But kudos to them, these kinds of injustices should not exist. Spain is way behind obviously.

I know there's a couple of shady characters in there, but everything (or mostly everything) is better than the Moshiri puppet with Usmanov holding the strings, TBH...
All owners are problematic…so for fans it’s often a case of out of the frying pan and into the fire.

But Everton will be relegated if this ownership group doesn’t sell. So in the short term this is probably a positive move. But it could easily turn sour later. The fans are always the ones left holding the bag.

The takeover gives me an ever so slightly hope for this season, because I'm guessing the new owners will do everything in their power to stay up...if not for anything else than to protect their investment.

I consider Everton as the most mismanaged club in quite a while, at least since Leeds about 20 years ago, so any change in leadership will be for the better, almost no matter how it turns out.

Still think Everton - as a club, based on turnover and reputation - should end up safe, mid table most seasons, and then compete for a European spot, and maybe have a nice cup run, every now and then. (And then hope for a "perfect" season, at some point.) It's quite telling that we've not won any thing since the FA Cup in 1995 (and really had no chance in the league since we won in '87).

Apart from Ancelotti, no other manager has come close to that since Moyes, under the current owners. And I'm blaming the owners, more than (most of**) the managers that has come and gone...

** OK, Lampard was sh*t, and Benítez was a terrible fit, but other than that...

Ready for City. Hoping we can go 4 wins in a row. I expect many other supporters are as well! Can’t have City running away with it!

Man U v Brighton should be a tasty match as well.

Looks like it’s going to be a long afternoon against City. We are lucky to be level after 10 minutes.
City 4 wins, West Ham 3 wins and a draw, it's going to be a tough long afternoon. On paper City are the better team but I am predicting a draw.
