Lol your 10 year old Garmin can’t do a 1/10 of what the Apple Watch can do.
... which is no help at all if those 10x features the Apple Watch has doesn't include the athletic sensor integration that you need. You will still have to wear or carry a second device to make up for the AW's deficiencies.

That doesn't mean the AW is a bad product, isn't worth buying, etc, etc. It's just a large area Apple has left untouched, and a market segment that has to look for alternatives to find what they need.

I upgraded from Series 3 to Series 7 only because the former lost WatchOS support + was painfully slow. Could tolerate the slow performance to an extent, but i´m not happy with having things with outdated software due to security concerns. I can´t see enough reasons to upgrade a Series 7 in the near future: its fast, it will remain up-to-date for many years and has all the functions i need. Only possible reason to upgrade is an outstanding new sensor or me starting extreme sports, which is unlikely.

Started w/ a 4 upgraded to the 7 (sleep usage now) then added an Ultra which is my every day & good for both competitive pistol shooting & even better for lap swimming & biking. Will stay w/ those 2 & see what an updated Ultra offers next yr.

I went from the S0 to the S7 in December 2021. I really don't see them adding anything that makes me want to upgrade for a while.

One improvement I’d love to see them make is to bring the Ultras Action Button to other models to allow some utility and rapid access to capabilities there. Maybe with the next redesign.

Can apple make a watch that does everything my 10 year old garmin can do?

Seriously add ant+ integration or support Bluetooth sensors like external heart rate, left right power meters, cadence sensors, radar sensor, etc.

Is it too much to ask for a watch made for real athletes? Ultra only added all day battery life. One check mark.
I loved my Garmin Forerunner 230 for tracking activities but needed cellular so I can leave my phone at home when I go to the gym, on a hike, or to swim.

The Garmin had great battery life and was very accurate on runs but I needed more and even the top-end Garmin watches can't send text, make calls, pay for things, control my home locks and alarms, operate my garage door, and control my car like my Apple or Samsung watch can...all without needing my phone.

I've been waiting years for a Garmin watch that can do everything my Apple/Samsung watches can do. Still waiting...

You don't think dual band GPS will be offered on the 9 since the Ultra has it? Not to mention a few sport and fitness watches around the same price as the 8 also have had it for a while now.

The fact that they are still using a 10 year old Garmin says something about longevity & being a mindful consumer. The poster also brings up a good point about adding the common ant+ support, which many runners, cyclist & other fitness fans may actually want. It's not like having it will take away from the Apple Watch.

Ant+ protocol is owned by Garmin now, so highly unlikely to get into Apple products.
Corros, Polar, & Suunto all offers multiple models with ant+ support with some actually offering ant+ accessories.

I see people are finally coming around to the fact that Cook and Apple do two things very well.

1) Raise Prices
2) Offer you less.

Apple is dying much like Marvel is. All things come to an end. Truly hope a new competitor comes in with a new phone. Elon, where you at bruh?

This would be great: bring standalone Apple Watch with NO dependency on iPhone or any other device (except Mac). Add camera to take pictures, work as scanner (including Apple Live Text) and web browser like Safari to read QR codes. An extra bonus would be to connect it to the Mac. Then I am sold:

Time For The Apple Watch to Separate From The iPhone

It’s Time for the Apple Watch to Break Free From the iPhone

Apple's emphasis now is on the Ultra. The normal watch has taken a back seat.

I think you have basically described the problem. An Apple Watch designed solely for athletes is not going to have mass appeal (which is the conundrum Garmin faces). The Apple Watch Ultra is still at its core an Apple Watch that we all know and love. Even if I am not a hardcore athlete, I can still appreciate the larger display and longer battery life, and therefore justify getting one.

So yeah, it may be too much to ask for an Apple Watch made for "real athletes", whatever that may entail.
