Well LR and Jaguar's British history makes it surprising they're here in the first place. Most people were disappointment with the build quality of the S and X-type in particular, though I suppose that's subjective. Considering the cost and competition, it wasn't exactly a good deal. Jaguar never turned a profit under Ford (in almost 20 years of ownership). I Ford certainly kept Jaguar alive to some degree, but out little effort in keeping the brand cutting edge- rather see how they could turn a Ford into a Jaguar. Under Tata, I think they got a lot more attention and money to actually produce an impressive and remotely competitive product. They did help with dismal reliability and quality, but they did little to make Jaguar a car worthy of remotely rivaling the competition (especially in the smaller segments, which is where all the money is. They're just figuring that one out).
I appreciate your love of Jaguar- I'm a big fan of the (classic looking) XJ's. But in the not so distant past their sales quite bad and pretty gave them the money to stay afloat.
Land Rover on the other hand did not exactly flourish until Tata took over. BMW did a great job over complicating the vehicles. Ford did keep LR alive and make some slight quality improvements, but much of LR's design success was carried through from BMW's ownership.
