Surprised no one has discussed the Dodge SRT Demon the supposed successor to the Hellcat....

Frankly.... I am not too hyped up on it myself. The Hellcat is an amazing motor put in an ancient vehicle and platform. I just don't get why people would put up with an overall poor vehicle just for the motor..... If you want a straight line performer, that's fine. But the car shouldn't be crap just to get that straight line performance....

The Demon will be the same thing, but at least this time it looks like by spyshots, Dodge will put proper tires on it in order to handle the power vs the skinny wheels on the Hellcat.

I vaguely recall seeing an article on the net in the summer of 2015 about a Hellcat zombie prototype that used AWD to put the power down. People love motors because a lot of car people see numbers on paper and think that's the be all end all of cars. These are people who'll buy a 15K Chevy crate motor and stuff it into their build. Never mind that it can't put the power down, has crummy contact patch and terrible handling.

They're big, comfy, have incredible street presence, a few bolts-ons away from 850+ HP, you can run a sticky 275/315 20" combo (on aftermarket wheels) and handle/stop decently well for 99% of most of the street driving people will do.

Ever driven one?

A Hellcat? No, but I have driven a regular Charger and rode in a Challenger. Wasn't impressed at all even ignoring my preference for a car that is more than just about going in straight lines. I respect the engines, but the cars themselves don't impress and as mentioned in relation to the Alfa, they come with FCA quality and reliability..... If I wanted a straight line car, I would go for something like the last gen C63 AMG with that 6.2 V8.

Every comment about the Hellcat is about the engine. They all drool over it, they don't necessarily drool over the car itself. It will be the same with the Demon. They will go crazy of having 800 HP, but sort of ignore the rest of vehicle.....

Had a rental charger once. Probably of the lowest chain variety. Thing that struck me was the odd suspension. When we'd drastically stop, the car would bob and sway to the tune of motion sickness on a boat. It was a smooth ride otherwise.

you guys are missing the point. its supposed to be a purpose built drag car - thats the point. and its completely unapologetic about it. its big, its heavy, its loud, its brash, and its fast as ****...as mopar intended. those wanting a camaro or mustang need not apply, its borderline a different class of vehicle altogether.

Alright, but where are you going to drive it? Contrary to popular idea, drag strips aren't very common in most parts of the country. And a day at a track is very costly. It's an engine with a good tranny that has AWD. That's about it. It's fine in a straight line. That's it really.

Edit: Think I spotted you in a vortex thread this morning.

Hellcat isn't AWD. Only the V6 as of now will be offered in AWD.

Oh I agree Camaro and Mustang is in a different class altogether. Challenger is a pure muscle car where Camaro/Mustang have left that class and are borderline sports cars/coupes now.

And the Hellcat is not a purpose built vehicle. Purpose built vehicles are like the 5th gen Camaro Z/28 and the GT350R.... You don't lose any practicality by going to the Hellcat. All you get is an even bigger engine by going with the Hellcat. Even if it was, it sucks considering you're asking 275 wheels to be able to put down 707 HP....

As I stated above, I am not calling the Challenger/Charger crap because all they can do is go straight. If they were actually good cars, I would give them credit even if they were not to my tastes. They are crap because the only thing that makes them good are the engines and road presence( will give them that too, they do look good). How they drive, feel, and the quality/reliability is what makes them crap.

@D.T. Wanted to know if you've ever noticed rock chips on your black gloss wheels?

We're talking about the Demon, not the Hellcat. The Demon is based off of the Hellcat.

I don't think the Demon will be AWD either by spyshots. Demon has fatter wheels in the back compared to the fronts.

EDIT: Nevermind.... Looks like they are the same size at all four corners....

I'd love a GT350R for a weekend cruiser or summer cruiser.

Plenty of AWD cars manage to have fatter rears. It's nothing new. AWD doesn't prevent over steer at excessive speeds or bad corner entry. If used by a professional, AWD is very effective but still requires gingerly movements when dealing with a beastly machine. Fatter rears increase the contact patch area to overcome the excessive power being dealt to the wheel and improve your odds of not dying.

When I was much younger and arguably more adventurous, I did my fair share of pushing cars and managing terrible spinouts. These days if I feel adventurous, I disable TC for a few minutes before common sense kicks in and turn it back on.

Ah good to know...

But seeing that they haven't spread AWD to the V8 models yet, don't think Demon will be AWD either.

They've stayed pretty mint looking and chip free, the paint seems pretty durable. In fact, the only really notable issue is a self-induced scrape on the right/rear, on the outer lip (small like < 3/4" and not deep), but the great thing about a black wheel is a little touch up paint and it kind of disappears.

Demon's going to be more expensive and offer more. The AWD will allow the car to put the power down effectively. Currently, the Hellcat, while fast, has problems putting that power down effectively and loses some power when traction is broken. The current Hellcat will be continued for a few more years and offer interested parties a "bargain" beast that doesn't have fancy driving characteristics and is a brute.

Great. I was thinking of getting tinted wheels from the factory on my next car provided it's offered for MY17 later in the year of MY18. Hides brake dust well but it also looks great compared to the obscenely bright wheels that are common now.

From someone with good inside info:

If you want to get some inside information, go to the Hellcat forum and read ResumeSpeed's posts.

The Demon is going to have more HP (no numbers released), it will be lighter, it will be wider, wider tires and it will not be AWD.

ResumeSpeed also posted that they were testing the Demon and it ran 9's. Before anyone has a stroke, this isn't the production Demon. It will comfortably run 10's.

Many are assuming 800-850 hp because the original HC motor made 850 hp before they detuned it and got it to pass emissions.

Black wheels at some point became a little overused, then industry seemed to flip the other way! Still, I think black wheels in the right style, the right car, etc., and they can look pretty outstanding, and like you said, they've got some good advantages.

Except his words and Bramptons are repeats of a spy article that popped up many many months ago. I know who he is, but at the same time the amount of insiders in any field base a lot of their info on materials they gather. What are the actual chances of someone in the company leaking this much info over years and never getting caught? Even with so called insiders who've got a 90% correct track record, I reserve to take their word with a grain of salt.

No, not black. I think Merc do offer black gloss, but they've had stained gray satin clearcoat on their regular alloys before. I'm no too worried about rock chips but brake dust and other environmental stuff eating through the coating and revealing the brighter wheel. I typically use IronX and other decontamination products. Bright alloys were a huge trend in the 90s and most of the 2000s before tastes changed. Also depends on the car, as you pointed out.

You said you haven't driven a Challenger, so how can you now say it drives like crap? The engines and road presence are what make them good cars - the engine and the road presence is the point...you still aren't getting it. They feel big and heavy because they are big and heavy - again, by design. I doubt they feel like crap, in fact I'd bet they are a lot more compliant and less stiff than my Brembo 5.0. Haven't heard any reliability horror stories either. All of your complaints basically validate that you don't really understand muscle cars nor their appeal. Chrysler certainly hasn't missed the mark - they've done EXACTLY what they set out to do, and built exactly what they intended to and the hellcat was literally a big **** you to those complaining about weight - everyone wants a lighter car? sorry, but were gonna give it more power instead.

also the demon is going to have drag radials all around and no back seat from what i heard.

nobody buying a demon wants awd. wrong market. this isnt the wrx crowd were talking about. awd on the demon would be doa with the market its intended for, so scratch that...this car will be rwd with fat drag radials

I've been in a hellcat. It's uncomfortable as hell. I couldn't drive one all the time even if I wanted to.

That thing does look impressive. It's a shame it probably will share in FCA's overall poor reliability. It's a shame too....

No one ever buys an Alfa for reliability! Up there with the other FCA group cars such as Maserati, you are buying them for looks and driving fun! I had an Alfa once, was a company car so I did not have to pay for any of the numerous repairs :D

Think it's time for some new shoes. Glad that my Costco carries the PSS.

I really want slotted and dimpled rotors with custom calipers. Ah if only I had unlimited funds, I've got a bucketlist of stuff I want to do to my car.

That doesn't include making it sound like a lawnmower, rice burner, or crotch rocket.

Unfortunately, if that's the case, they're going to have a tough time driving that car like it's meant to be driven. Likely the TCS on the Demon will effectively neuter it to a point where the car loses tarmac performance. Giving more power to a car rather than effectively reducing weight is by far the cheapest route for a manufacturer to take on.
