I thought Audi's retractable screens were awesome, genuine wow moment when i first saw one in flesh. Shame they're getting rid of them. BMW's is neither here nor there...its just functional. Merc's approach is lazy and ugly to my taste. The new screens in the S and E feel off to me...its just not seamless and feels like an iPad display tacked on a dash.
Yeah. Merc got a lot of complaints from loyal owners. Expect to see the digital dash to trickle down the line in the years to come. The 2018 or 2019 C redesign is rumored to get one despite the test vehicles spotted featuring analog clusters. The actual dash in the E and S don't look bad. I thought they did, but you have to see them in person to make up your mind. Personally, I would have wanted them inset in the dash and a glass pane or polycarbonate in front.
The dash in both causes the dash to be rather tall and would be difficult for short drivers. Gauge design wise, Audi gets the clarity reward from me. Good contrasting colors, clean information, nothing excessive.
Lexus dash integration is nice but the actual system is annoying and needs a rethink. And just put CarPlay/Auto in it. Not doing so is asinine.
I err on the side of it being dated design, but it looks alright in the LC and upcoming LS. It makes sense. The actual Lexus infotainment system is dated, but it works and isn't buggy. I truly wonder how the LS and LC will fare. They're radically new approaches to vehicles by Lexus.
I'm still partial to JLR's approach because i prefer touch screens to jog dials
Haven't driven or tested one, but the interiors of some Jags need to be heightened. Touch screen's are nice, but I'm driving 99% of the time and I would prefer to not be distracted.
Overall though, my favourite cabin right now is the Audi TT/R8 setup
The old R8 and the old TT had in dash systems. Removing those saved valuable space allowing for a lowered dash.
I get why the four rings got rid of the moving screens. Seems like just another thing to break.
I suspect they'll keep it in for the higher end models, but with the ability to be hidden away. They're supposedly easier to repair or replace than in dash systems.
Expect digital dash prices to fall in the coming years once other automakers adopt them, or rather quality Japanese and premium/luxury companies. I wouldn't expect to see them on high end luxury cars like Bentley or Rolls Royce. The next generation 3 and 4 are expected to get a digital dash. Which may not sit well with purists who have enjoyed BMW's trademark red dashes at night for decades.
It looks cool, but I never use nav so I am willing to bet 100% of the time it would just be displaying fake analog gauges anyway. At $500, why the hell not. At 3 grand? No thanks.
As I said above, it'll come down in the future. Remember how expensive backup cameras were? The price went down over time before it became a requirement for all cars sold in the US. Now companies do 360 cameras thanks to the massive changes in rear end design limiting view for drivers even further.
