Honda and Acura are not in the same field as a Lexus or a Merc or Audi, whatever. Lexus do it mainly because they don't easily break from their traditional design. The LS500 and LC500 are two luxury cars who retain the in dash display because Lexus doesn't care about dash space saving. They care for uniformity. I think what Audi's doing is the best way to go about it. I don't know how BMW do it, maybe a BMW owner can chime in. The E and S class now come with tablet displays, getting rid of that unsightly static screen. I suspect other classes sans the CLA will see it in a mid cycle refresh.
The screen wasn't a deciding factor for me between the Audi and the BMW. I don't mind in dash or the ipad look, personally. BMW basically has the same setup as Audi, except the display is much further away from the driver.

Is this the first new car you've ever ordered? (you know, pre-build)

Me personally? Yes, my Saturn was an off the lot purchase only because it was configured exactly the way I wanted it and was just off the transport truck. My family though has ordered many vehicles( 2002 E46 330xi, 2007 E90 335xi, 2013 Equinox, and 2016 Suburban).

I am suspecting the dealer changed a current general order to my configuration and it that was already accepted by GM, but before the cutoff point for order changes( anything beyond 3000 order status). As I just ordered it a week ago and if it was a fresh brand new order, would not have progressed as fast as it did considering there was an ordering constraint of 0 for the LT1 V8 last week and would probably be at 1100 still and maybe 2000( order accepted) considering there are 139 LT1's available for this week.

Oh well... I am just glad it is progressing, even if it might arrive sooner than I really wanted. As I may have to park it for a few weeks due to our lows being in the 30's for much of March historically and not being safe to drive on summer tires at those temps. Though the highs would be in the 50's.

No some 3rd person who's not participating in this conversation ... :D

Yeah, it can be a little annoying, the component constraints, weird production timing, etc., heck, I had a Corvette order get delayed like 2 weeks (not trying to put the whammy on you or anything), because of some kind of paint changeover at the factory where production gets shutdown.

I was just wondering if that question also included my families experience with ordering cars vs just limiting it to myself. :p Considering the Saturn was my first car and now the Camaro will be my second car.

I am suspecting GM is prioritizing producing the truck V8 engines right now over the LT1 and any LT1 produced is being sent for installation in the Stingray to build up inventory before the summer shut down of Bowling Green for retooling.

My dads E46 got caught in that weird window as well. We originally ordered a 2001 MY, but due to the summer shutdown of the factory it pushed the order back, and ended up getting one the first 2002 MY vehicles which was the LCI year for the E46 generation. Then two weeks after picking it up, a deer kamikazes into it and took roughly a month for the dealer to get a new hood since the LCI models just came out.

I thought Audi's retractable screens were awesome, genuine wow moment when i first saw one in flesh. Shame they're getting rid of them. BMW's is neither here nor there...its just functional. Merc's approach is lazy and ugly to my taste. The new screens in the S and E feel off to me...its just not seamless and feels like an iPad display tacked on a dash.

Lexus dash integration is nice but the actual system is annoying and needs a rethink. And just put CarPlay/Auto in it. Not doing so is asinine.

I'm still partial to JLR's approach because i prefer touch screens to jog dials

Overall though, my favourite cabin right now is the Audi TT/R8 setup

I get why the four rings got rid of the moving screens. Seems like just another thing to break.

The TT cockpit or whatever is neat, but it was too rich for my blood in the A4

It looks cool, but I never use nav so I am willing to bet 100% of the time it would just be displaying fake analog gauges anyway. At $500, why the hell not. At 3 grand? No thanks.

Yeah. Merc got a lot of complaints from loyal owners. Expect to see the digital dash to trickle down the line in the years to come. The 2018 or 2019 C redesign is rumored to get one despite the test vehicles spotted featuring analog clusters. The actual dash in the E and S don't look bad. I thought they did, but you have to see them in person to make up your mind. Personally, I would have wanted them inset in the dash and a glass pane or polycarbonate in front.

The dash in both causes the dash to be rather tall and would be difficult for short drivers. Gauge design wise, Audi gets the clarity reward from me. Good contrasting colors, clean information, nothing excessive.

I err on the side of it being dated design, but it looks alright in the LC and upcoming LS. It makes sense. The actual Lexus infotainment system is dated, but it works and isn't buggy. I truly wonder how the LS and LC will fare. They're radically new approaches to vehicles by Lexus.

Haven't driven or tested one, but the interiors of some Jags need to be heightened. Touch screen's are nice, but I'm driving 99% of the time and I would prefer to not be distracted.

The old R8 and the old TT had in dash systems. Removing those saved valuable space allowing for a lowered dash.

I suspect they'll keep it in for the higher end models, but with the ability to be hidden away. They're supposedly easier to repair or replace than in dash systems.

Expect digital dash prices to fall in the coming years once other automakers adopt them, or rather quality Japanese and premium/luxury companies. I wouldn't expect to see them on high end luxury cars like Bentley or Rolls Royce. The next generation 3 and 4 are expected to get a digital dash. Which may not sit well with purists who have enjoyed BMW's trademark red dashes at night for decades.

As I said above, it'll come down in the future. Remember how expensive backup cameras were? The price went down over time before it became a requirement for all cars sold in the US. Now companies do 360 cameras thanks to the massive changes in rear end design limiting view for drivers even further.

I wouldn't be surprised if Audi brings touch to their MMI system if it doesn't already have it. The 2018 Golf R, at least, is getting the VAG digi-dash plus touch controls on the in dash infotainment system. I think 991.2's get the touch system or the new Panamara.

Now that the Camaro is a reality.... I am still debating on getting a catch can.... I don't doubt the fact with DI engines, valves will get carbon build up. It's just the rate of build up that I am not sure on. Some predict engine doomsday by around 35-40K miles with the valves coked up to hell. We have seen VW and BMW engines suffer pretty bad from it, but really very little data on the LT1 to see how bad it is with that engine. The Camaro's LT1 has an air/oil separator on the CCV side, but nothing on the PCV( Corvette's LT1 does not have the air/oil separator).

If the build up is so bad that a valve job is needed within the 30-50K mile range, I think a catch can would absolutely be worth it. If the build up is low where a valve job is needed in the high mileage range, I don't think it would be worth it while the car is within the warranty period. GM has denied and voided warranties due to catch cans. A $1000 valve cleaning is going to be cheaper than having to pay for a new motor if my warranty gets voided due to the presence of a catch can.

From my research on the Camaro, it's worth the expense in the long run. You can't go wrong with a catch can. You can always do what people cat camaro5 do and remove the can, oil some stuff up and take the car in for maintenance. GM keep digging themselves a grave with the stupid **** they pull.

Yeah I heard the Gen IV's had issues with the PCV system, but nothing much about the Gen V's which has a redesigned PCV.

Here is a picture of a 'Vette's LT1 with 38,000 miles. Got some build up, but nothing too excessive yet.

Every other picture I have seen that is worse than that is from a company trying to sell me the catch can saying without a catch can, my engine is doomed to increased wear and tear, etc.

That's really clean compared to what the first generation turbo BMW engines did. I've seen some scope photos of engines at 15-20K miles with buildup that makes it look like the area is slathered in coal soot. You could not get it and buy a scope cam. They're fairly cheap for a high tech auto tool. About 100-300 depending on the brand and features.

I am biased to my Tesla interior.

The screen is fantastic for one central location for everything I need, I really love the live action camera coming from the rear as a wide angle view for another vantage point, and the rest of the interior is very minimal which I lean towards.

The screen is very fast and reactive to inputs, quality is top notch, and nothing beats the size of it for navigation and other functions within it.

Also with Tesla its like driving a new car over and over again as they are consistently upgrading/enhancing the user experience with software updates.

Yeah, I have seen those pictures too. I should ask my brother if he ever scoped my dads E90( he has it now) with the N54 to see how bad the build up is.

The problem is, all the pictures of build up is of the VW's and BMW's and that is what the catch can companies use to sell you on their products. But there are very little pictures and data on other DI engines of other manufactures. That LT1 is only one picture I found of a non-catch can LT1 with miles on it. That is only one engine though. All the data and images is of those BMW's and VW engines.

Run a query along the lines of "scope cam [car name and year range or body series] and then drop the common software for forums, which would be xenforo or vbulletin" and you should see a lot of stuff popup. Even older data/photos. Do this on Google, sans quotes. IP.Board is another major forum script, but I've yet to see more than a handful of car forums use it.

But I hear where you're coming from. I've never fallen for that ******** on product sites. I want to read others' experiences and view their own images. Believe it or not, it's incredibly easy to digitally fabricate internals and make them look real with 3D software or clever editing in PS. Though with the Bimmers, they got cruddy real fast. It's a $200 or so job every 20-30K miles.

I got to say, I continue to just fracking *adore* this Coyote motor, especially when paired up with the 3.73 rear in the manual PP. It's been a little more lively (and for longer) in this coolish weather, and the mix of low/mid/upper end power, RPM range, smoothness, sound, it's just superb.

I was considering some FI in the near future, but I think I might stick with an NA build, target another 700-800 RPM up top.

Saw a beautifully restored 60s J40 today. The owner was there so we chatted a bit. Very, very nice car. I got home and thought to look at classics prices and my eyes bugged out.

Any of you guys know which fuse I yank to disable ABS in my E60? All this snow lately in New England makes me realize yet again how useless ABS, traction control and stability control are. Increased braking distance, inhibition of forward movement, inability to slide around strategically... all worthless and dangerous features.

I would like to yank the same fuses in my girlfriends gen2 Volvo S60 as well. Disabiling the airbags too has been on my to do list as well. Those things are dangerous and cause more harm than good. I feel bad putting off these mods when her safety and wellbeing is the most important thing in the world to me.
