Appraisal from hell:
Hang tight, itās a long story, but I win in the end.š
So thereās one of two cars Iām looking at buying (Actually finalizing shortly) , one of which I just had appraised yesterday.
The first appraiser that was recommended to me has an alleged ā30+ yearsā of experience hired by law firms, car collectors, insurance companies, dealerships, etc. So I called the guy and I explained Iām looking to have the car appraised because itās āmodifiedā And I need an accurate representation of what the car is actually worth -versus- what the seller is actually charging. He said no problem, He continues to ramble on how āexperiencedā he is and I should take his word like itās scripture with Copious amounts of Babel mixed in so I would ātrust himā. When we start discussing what he charges, he names a hefty price tag for his services, (Way more than I was expecting it to be). So if Iām paying for a premium service, I asked him again, specifically tell me what you inspect on the car. So he Says he looks like at the paint, body structure, interior and takes the car for a brief test drive to make sure everything seems mechanically sound. I specifically told him I wanted certain things inspected and he kind of ignored my request and continues to ramble on about something else. (But Iām trying to be as friendly as possible, until I can figure out if heās legit or some type of experienced scammer.)
In the midst of all this, I told him I would think about it and I would call him back in the afternoon with my decision. So I called the guy back about two hours later and I wanted to re-confirm what exactly he inspects on the car and if he can meet my expectations, and finally he says, āWell no, I canāt check for XYZ, I only look at the paint and interior. So I ask him, āWhy didnāt you tell me that in the beginning when I asked you the first time?ā (He doesnāt really provide a relevant answer to this question, Just throws more excuses trying to show how smart he is.)
I asked him what he knew about this specific car, and if heās ever appraised any type of vehicle like this before. And he answers āIāve appraised hundreds of themā. My next question was, what kind of engine is in this car? He couldnāt even answer that, but reverts he Has plenty of connections in the car industry with ābig namesā.
Then, the appaiser mentions how busy he is and that if I want to use the services, I would have to book him soon, otherwise his fees would increase ādue to demandā if I wanted certain services completed. (Yet, Ironically, he has over an hour and a half of wasting his time/my time of telling random stories if heās āso busyā.)
So at this this point, I cut him off in the discussion (Which he thinks he can āoutsmartā me, which he didnātš), and I called him out and I said youāre Not qualified to appraise this car and I think youāre willing just āto take my money for the sake of taking itā and you were just going to generate some number that probably wonāt represent this car actually of what is actually worth.
It Was at this point in the discussion, he knew he was caught and not getting my money. I basically told him to āpound sandā in a very respectful manner. (Oh, I did do my due diligence by back-end researching this person prior to hiring him, and I really couldnāt find much information on his background given some brief āLinked-Inā description of 37 years of experience. [Even his website was unsecured and highly generic for someone of his alleged caliber.]
So, I called around and found an appraiser out of New York who works direct with Barrett Jackson and appraised The car for me within less than two hours. Professional, quick and concise with the appraisal, And explained everything to me, so I would understand where his number was coming from. So in the end, I lost my time, but not my money.
Iāve always said it my whole life in my career, āIf something doesnāt seem right, it probably isnāt.ā
