Saw a video on CNBC about American pickup trucks turning into a luxury vehicle like the Ford F-150. Honest question, whats the point of buying a large pickup truck if you will never use the tray? Why not get an SUV? Does it make sense to buy a fully loaded $55K F-150 and use it for construction work where environments are abusive? Is it even made to be heavy duty?

TBH, half ton pickups(F-150, Silverado 1500, Ram 1500) have always been targeted more as "large consumer trucks" with fairly limited payload capacity and towing capacity. If all you do is haul dirt/rocks/wood etc or maybe pull a camper or boat a couple of times a month they do the job. If you're doing heavy hauling day in and day out, you should PROBABLY have at least a 3/4 if not 1 ton truck(although even 3/4s have crept up toward "luxury" trim).

I think there are several things going on with it. For one, Americans like big vehicles, and big body on frame rear wheel drive cars are a thing of the past. Pickups still offer you that. There's an incentive for the makers to build them in favor of big cars because, for a while, CAFE standards treated them differently than it did cars(not sure if that's still the case) so the companies could still build big vehicles without having to take hits on gas guzzler taxes or other things that factor into CAFE calculations.

Many people get "hooked" on high ground clearance and sitting up high, and don't want to go back to a car once they've done that. That slots them into always buying CUVs, SUVs, or pickups(minivans also work, but are "not cool" now). You can see that in the market in the US, with fewer and fewer true car offerings these days.

There are people for whom it only makes sense to have one vehicle, but they want something nice that can haul both the family and some stuff in the bed or pull a trailer. That's another big market for these fancy 1/2 tons. My brother in law is one of those people. He has a fairly nicely trimmed F150 Ecoboost. It's his main vehicle(my sister drives their Pilot), and they have 3 children. They also have a camper and a boat. All 5 of them can pile in that truck, and they can take their boat/camper out for a weekend or week or whatever.

All of that aside, there's a subculture here around trucks, just like there is one around American muscle cars, Jeeps, small Japanese cars, or plenty of other types of vehicles. Trucks honestly are a great platform for a lot of cosmetic mods because they are body-on-frame, and the suspension is amenable to lifting if that's what's wanted. Not everyone who owns a truck mods it by any means, but it's really common in some parts of the country(especially down south and in the rural midwest).

Folks do all sorts of stuff that makes no sense. Why even get an SUV if you don't go off-roading?

You are not wrong but when an SUV has similar price to a car, why not go with an SUV? Plus an SUV is larger so you can carry more and its more comfortable for long ride and just in case you go off road you have the option.

With a truck you are stuck with this car form that has a bed that you will probably never use for a high price. Also SUV are more veresatile to be used for anything while trucks has the personality of being a rough off-roader. I can see the Queen of England being driven around in a Range Rover or Escalade but can't imagine her waving at the crowd from a Dodge RAM.

my idea of a pickup truck is to make something cheaper than an SUV that can carry more load around than your average Corolla.

Yes you did read that correct for insurance unfortunately.

Don’t know about the US, in the U.K. there is a tax avoidance opportunity when you use a vehicle that is classed as being able to carry more than 1 tonne. Especially for company owners it can be beneficial as there is a significant reduction in benefit in kind, and there is also a company reduction against plants and machinery. Hence a luxury car that is a “gas guzzler” makes sense and you end up paying very little tax.

In addition there is also a benefit with regards to towing capability so great for pleasure with say like a powerboat :)

I don't understand, if your car can carry more weight it gets a tax deducation? Shouldn't it be the opposite since that means it weighs less and easier on the roads?

Anybody ever track down (or occasionally search for) cars you’ve sold? I guess it’s more common with people who are really into their vehicles, and particularly if it’s a really unique car (either the make/model, and/or if it’s customized).

Just interesting to see where it’s been, if it has changed and whatnot.

Funny you posted that (years ago). I had a Toyota pickup when I was in college. It was a base model, and back then they didn't have a lot of the features that they consider standard now. Someone added cruise control to it, and some lights, and a CD/radio head unit. I loved that truck, and it came in handy for moving several times during my student career. I had joined the Toyota Owner Experience program, and had the truck registered where I was living.

Well, I received an email from Toyota to introduce me to the Owner Experience Program, and tried to create ana ccount, was told I already had one, and got the password changed. Turns out my, not decades old, pickup is owned by someone in Mexico. Weird. It made it all the way from northern Michigan, when I sold it, to Mexico, and was still running, apparently. Hmm... It made me wonder about all of the other cars I've owned, and sold. One was a Datsun 310-GX, that I replaced the carburetor and due to issues with the transverse mounting of the engine, got to the point where I could replace the clutch in about 45 minutes. (I went through a clutch about every 18 months. Found out it was a bad bearing, and the 'push pin' getting stuck occasionally. But that car got me laid, and through community college) The young kid that bought it was so stoked to have his first car. So happy. I remember the grin as he signed the 'receipt' that I typed up. His mom thought he was making a mistake, but that car was full of positive memories. It had fantastic karma. Far too many amazing concerts, and cross country trips. But anyway...

I wonder who has my old Audi A4 Quattro. I LOVED that car. I loved driving that car. I leased it. I had to sell it as I'd have had to pay HUGE for the mileage at the end of the lease. OUCH!:(

Pickup trucks are very limited, which explains the 'crew cab' option, which I still think is hysterical. If you need more inside space, buy a cheap 'real car'. Tacking a 'car' onto a pickup truck is just ridiculous. I laughed way too hard when I saw a pickup with a full size bed, AND a 'crew cab' that didn't mean eating your knees. It was so long, it wouldn't fit into a normal parking spot. I imagined their garage with the door open, and that ridiculous rear end sticking out. YIKES!!!

Not even close! I’ll see if anyone else chimes in before I put you out of your misery. £48 repair is your other clue!

This is a bit in jest since I don't know the inspections you have, but the corner of a " THIS CAN CAUSE DEATH" sticker is slightly torn. :p

Okay. So my 4 year old Golf failed its MOT on the size of the letters on the number plates.
Just to put that in context these are the number plates that were fitted by the dealer when the car was new. Not fancy personalised ones. Passed its test the other years.
Anyway I was a bit skeptic but my choices were it will fail the test and pay £45 for a retest. Or pay £48 and they would replace them for me.
So I asked for the old ones. They are in fact about 5mm short. Never noticed. Neither has anyone else apparently!

Did they have the official marks on the and the number of the supplier? You could have a claim there.

That could be a real issue for the supplier. If they have been putting BS (British Standard, not the other options for our American friends ?) marks on them but they do not actually implement the standard they are almost certainly committing some sort of crime

Indeed. VW main dealer. Been around for years. Anyway I’ll give them a call some point next week when I’m off.

Ordered:

My first Camaro SS...but with a spin to it. Shipping out of the Blue Ridge Mountains and delivering on Saturday.

Also, just a quick plug for ‘Montway shipping‘. Worked with them and their prices were reasonable, they have excellent insurance programs behind their delivery for vehicles and they keep the customer updated regularly. Highly recommend, as it is my second time using them.

Eeeh … okay. ?

But now I'm curious as to how they found out. You're not going to tell me that it's part of your MOT to measure the size of the letters on the number plates? Are you?
