In over 30 years in Kentucky, what sticks out more in my memory than snow is ice storms, and we've had some vicious ones.

I can remember when I was in college getting probably a half inch of ice and a couple inches of snow on top of it. Campus was mostly navigable with a coating of snow, and then the geniuses in grounds decided to clear the snow off and leave a skating rink under it.

People still talk about the blizzard of 78(before my time) and 94(which I remember). We usually manage one good snow storm a year, although it's been hit or miss the last few years. To say "Kentucky doesn't get snow" is a pretty ignorant statement.

I was there for the 74 tornadoes, 78 winter, 94 winter...I would say that our snowfall has definitely been less in the last 20 years. if we got 3 inches in any time since 94, I would be surprised. But then again, my memory may not be perfect.

We had a really bad ice storm back in 2009 that was really bad, that was the last time I really remember bad weather here.

I couldn't remember if the last really bad ice storm was in 08 or 09. There was a bad one in 04 also I think.

I can remember some 4-6" or so snowfalls in the 90s and early 2000s in Central Kentucky. Since I wasn't in Louisville at the time, I don't know if the storms were as bad there.

I don't recall specific numbers from my 10 years in Louisville. I know there were some that dropped a few inches and became an annoyance for at least part of the next day, and a few that seemed to drop some, melt off, and then drop more the next night. Like you said, though, nothing serious, and I'd say more of a nuisance.

Yeah, we get the sprinkling of snow, which I'm glad we do not get more. I hate the stuff. I'm not far enough south. I'll get more pics when I'm able to and the weather cooperates. I'm still trying to line up a shop to do PPF and also tint my door windows. And I need to clean it, badly. :)

Yeah, I do not like dealerships...that whole "let me check with the manager on that" and the back/forth is such a waste of time. I"m not young anymore and the thought of spending hours in a dealership just seems so stupid.

FYI, Ford has 2 plants here in Louisville. Looks like they might idle (yet again) the Escape plant:

You hate snow? How dare you! Whelp....Me too!😁 That’s why I’m permanently retiring to Florida in the next 14 years, I’ve already got my plans set (Was originally Fort Myers Beach, but now it’s looking like Florida Keys.) I like snow, to be more specific, it’s the salt that I have the biggest problem with. It’s corrosive to vehicle paint and over the course of time, destroys the underbody of a vehicle.

Even with ceramic coating my cars, more specifically my dailies with the SHO/Prius, it makes a huge difference with the salt washing off much easier and it doesn’t stick nearly as easy as a vehicle that’s non-ceramic coated, but there’s nothing you can do to stop the salt on a vehicle, and that’s my biggest gripe. Because where there’s snow and freezing temperatures, salt follows.

Anyway back on topic, as far as the dealerships go, you nailed it, I can’t stand the ‘let me check with my manager’, that’s a bunch of ridiculously stupid gameplaying that they try to put some mental leverage on the customer under the notion of ‘You’re getting a good deal!’ when you’re not if you truly understand the numbers.

I know dealerships have to make money to and they have a way of doing things, but the problem is, they use gimmicky ads that have loads of fine print with ‘additional charges.’ Then sites like Carvana, it’s still in the early stages of growing, and I’d be curious to see where they are two years from now, with even the pandemic killing dealership in some ways.

Definitely post more pictures, it will look good with the tinted windows from the contrast of the white paint, and you’ll appreciate the paint protection, that goes along way and makes it much more manageable to keep clean.

i bought a honda civic in 1992, just off the boat into a new city. Who to figure; i would still be driving it today. Same city. Still enjoy how it handles w/o cup holders. getting parts is a effort tho.

Not really sure what's going on in here. This goes beyond what I'd call brake "dust" and almost is like flakes of friction material. Granted I don't actually know how old these shoes are-they could well be OEM asbestos shoes(that was all I could get for the Marina when I bought the parts for it). I have a new set...somewhere...but there's enough lining left here that I also hate to dump it.

That's a nasty mess from the leaking cylinders, too

If you had leaking cylinders, I'd replace the shoes no matter what. If they were soaked in brake fluid, you'll never get reliable braking effect again.

You guys mind if I share some pictures of my truck in here or would that kind of clog up the discussions?

Good point on that. It's a shame the set I bought years ago are packed up.

None the less, I ran in Autozone and for $23 I'll have a set here tomorrow.

The rear brakes "only" provide about 20% of the braking force on this car, but if nothing else you want the handbrake gripping tightly.

And, as the rear axle is responsible for the stability of the car (again, don't know - and can't seem to find - the proper English term for that; in German it's Spurführung) under braking, you absolutely don't want to have major differences between the left and right rear wheel.

So, with fresh shoes and cylinders in hand, I decided it was time to get to work.

Starting point(previously posted)

IMG_1968 2.jpg

Now-the result of probably close to a half hour with brake cleaner(thank goodness we can still get "the good stuff"-CRC Chlorinated Brake Cleaner), a brass brush(hand), and some shop rags. I still don't have the SOB of a circlip on the new cylinder yet.

And as clean as I could get the hardware I'm using...not perfect but it will do

Unfortunately, the mouth breathers at the local parts shop that will turn drums won't touch mine because the specs aren't in their system. I pointed out that it's cast 10.06 maximum, .06 lining right into the drum, but the markings on the drum aren't good enough. They "aren't comfortable" turning it unless they can pull up the specs in their system.

Have I mentioned how much I hate drum brakes?
