I just still wish I could download custom ones directly on my iphone without buying them or being jailbroken.

You know, have a website or here even serving them up and changing them on the fly.

I assume you mean without using iTunes?

I just setup my text tone as the tracker sound from 'Aliens.' My current ringtone is 'the four peters' from family guy. It was a real pain trying to find a sample sound file for the aliens motion tracker. I had to settle on a clip from the movie with some background noise, but otherwise not bad at all.

My sounds:

Text = Star Trek doors sound.
New mail = Federation transporter
Send mail = Klingon transporter
Voicemail = Enterprise going to warp

These are all from The Next Generation, I'd love to find some sound FX from the new movie.

Care to share them? I have the door sound but would love the rest!

not really alert tones, but here are a few i've used for years:

one is a standard ringtone from the old nextel phones
another is the ring from the original metal gear solid
last is a dialup modem sound

Geek cred to anyone that can name the baud rate.

The sound at the end marks it as a v.90 modem IMHO.

Not sure if anyone has done or posted this before, but I thought others might benefit.

Here are all of the Mac OS X and Classic system sounds in iPhone Ringtone format. Download and unzip, then select all and double click to add to iTunes as ringtones or alert tones.

I tried some of the tones, but I'm unable to get them working for my Text alerts. I am able to select any of the included Alert/Ring tones as text tones, but for whatever reason, the custom tones do not work. Any ideas? Sorry if this is a hijack.

I'm a big Valve and Portal fan, so there are a slew of free ringtones and text tones from the game that you can download from Valve's site.


I use the Portal blue paint sound. (Lost on mere mortals unfamiliar with Portal 2.)

Would be annoying for those who get a ton of texts, but I don't so it's fine.

Yes, but we've never been able to make custom alert tones.

actually you can. you take your source, snip it, and then save it as a ringtone. although its not labeled as an alert tone, you can still choose that sound for your needs. i just tried it and it works.
