I've bought and tried 1Blocker (on the Mac) and I like it. However, I definitely have found it has broken more sites that AdGuard, and I get the impression that AdGuard is more active and responsive in fixing issues and updating rules based on feedback. Maybe the dev will catch up now the Mac version is done? In the meantime I've switched back...
Thanks for sharing your experience! I like AdGuard a lot - if only for the fact that it's just an extension - so there has to be a really convincing reason for me to switch. I'll wait and see how 1Blocker develops.

Honestly I hope that the AdGuard devs work out some way to pay them via the MAS, I'm always naturally suspicious of free adblockers! The responsiveness in this post alone has convinced me they are on the ball though.

I'm also not keen that 1Blocker runs a helper app in the background. The main blocking is done presumably just like all others in the extension...not sure why it's necessary to run the helper.

Most likely to communicate between the extension and the app that is reading the iCloud data.

This is my exact experience. I would be more than happy to pay for AdGuard.

pcmag.com is broken on the Mac and iPhone when Adguard is enabled.

Confirmed. Here is an open issue about this:
https://github.com/AdguardTeam/AdguardFilters/issues/2322
[doublepost=1466095589][/doublepost]
Ad Guard just uses a forked version of Easy List (ad block pluses list) and gets updates when easy list is updated.

It's pretty easy to see what's going on with our filters and when it is updated due to our changes or due to EasyList changes:
https://github.com/AdguardTeam/AdguardFilters

For instance, here is a changelog:

Working on a "PRO" iOS version right now.

What for MacOS, we have a standalone paid app:
https://adguard.com/en/adguard-mac/overview.html

However, it is very different from the Safari extension. It works on the network-level and able to filter any browser or app. That's why we can't put it into MAS (apps with kernel extensions cannot be there).

Question: Do any of these block video player ads? I know most blockers in the past haven't been able to do this (like the adblock extensions in Chrome can do).

Depends on the player and the ads. Generally, content blocking API allows us to block any web request (unlike the old api), but still some players have complicated ads you can't block by simply blocking a web request.

After a little bit of research and tests I ended up going with Wipr for adblocking and 1block for blocking trackers and social widgets.

Probably a lame question but with AG extension installed do you need ghostery also? Or does AG take care of everything without having ghostery installed.

I've been running with Cookie (https://sweetpproductions.com) and 1blocker (http://1blocker.com) on my Macs for a while. Probably a little belt and suspenders, but I HATE it when I see references to people on Facebook in links when I have not logged into Facebook in over a year.

Cookie gives you complete control over cookie retention. I'll see random cookies in the list after browsing, but they are not protected and they get wiped after 15 minutes (as I have it set).

1blocker does not seem to block cookies on it's own. Not sure how these safari extensions handle cookies though.

I love AdGuard but AFAIK it's still not possible to sync your whitelist. Is this a limitation of AdGuard being an extension only on the Mac?

In macOS Sierra, in the extensions settings of Safari I get warned that Adguard (2.3.9) is able to read and transfer all pages I visit and all infos I submit. Is that because of the "fallback"-option to the old api? Can it still transfer/read data even if I'm using the new api? Do I have to be worried?

Can somebody from team Adguard maybe give an answer to wether they log/process sites I visit, even with the new extension installed. Thanks!

Edit: Somebody seems to be on their holiday.

Still no answer to my question. Hmmm... I'd really like to pay for a good content-blocker. But not with my data.

Oh, I am sorry, missed this question here, it'd be better if you mention my username next time:).

Not only because of the fallback. Adguard registers a bunch of "content scripts":
https://github.com/AdguardTeam/Adgu...d83bd/Extension/browser/safari/Info.plist#L48

Partly these content scripts are used for ad blocking, the other part is necessary for the "manual element blocking" feature.

Can it still transfer/read data even if I'm using the new api?

Yes, it can do it through the content scripts. In fact any extension can do it, so you should be really careful installing any browser extension.

Do I have to be worried?

I guess you should decide it on your own.

What for us, we are trying to be as open and transparent as possible:
1. Adguard browser extension is open source.
2. We provide a detailed privacy policy.

Also all Safari extensions are reviewed by Apple staff very thoroughly (otherwise I don't understand why it sometimes takes up to 2 months:) ).

Why not use multiple lists in AdGuard? Standard settings should be sufficient, but you could ad EasyList, EasyPrivacy and Fanboys Annoyances. At least that's what I did.

Also see above.
