Interesting, I haven’t tried mouse on iPad yet myself. I do wonder how much people actually use mouse on iPad now.
I haven’t used much of scribble either. But I could see how it might interfere with navigation, especially when there are large text fields like posting in forums. Styluses are most efficient when used with keyboard shortcuts (hold space bar to pan/scroll). It’s definitely trickier with no keyboard.

I really hated my iPad experience with a Bluetooth mouse. I ended up getting a Magic Trackpad 2 and love it much more..but its an expensive way to get mouse support. It's mostly the scrolling and not liking how the extra buttons can't function as a "back button" in things like Safari with my Logitech Bluetooth mouse. I like using gestures on the Magic Trackpad. Granted for years I've always used the 4 and 5 finger gestures on the iPad.

I find using the pencil for normal iPad really awkward for me. In the short time I played with it, switching between handwriting mode and needing to enter things like space and normal navigation not really smooth as expected (the way I think about using it). I didn't like the location where you scribble depending on the apps I tried, the writing location can be in a really awkward spot. But I haven't played with this in a while scribbles was introduced so maybe there's a lot of improvements?

Oh yeah I already know I wouldn’t want to use a mouse with the iPad. It would definitely be a trackpad for me if anything. I prefer trackpad for Mac, so I’d think more so for iPad. Need those gestures.

I need to play with Scribble more too. I think it might be a matter of both getting used to it, and Apple making improvements. Recognition is a huge factor. It seemed pretty decent when I used it, but probably has room for improvement, and that will probably be a slow burn.

The Magic Mouse 2 is the only mouse I like with the iPad. It is silky smooth, adheres to inertia and scrolling and forward-back gestures are perfect. I have a Magic Trackpad on the other side for multi finger gestures, but I use the mouse 99,5% of the time.

Anyone comparing interacting and typing on a forum on a phone to a tablet is... well, misguided, I guess.

Apps like Tapatalk make forums very easy to use on phones.

Many forums also have a decent mobile scaling site, so that other than having a smaller screen to view media, the experience is pretty good.

No one is ever going to win the “portability vs. screen real estate” debate. It’s a rabbit hole. ?

edit- That said, portability is better.

I only ever view this forum/website through Tapatalk on my iPhone or iPad. This has been the case for many years for me.

After yesterdays announcement has this changed peoples views?

If the M1 IPad Pro gets some touch version of big sur at WWDC, does the iPad era return?

Sure, if they really make iPadOS similarly capable to macOS. I just don’t see that happening given how incremental the updates have been so far.

I’m curious what capabilities are you looking for? I think having that M1 chip changing everything for iPadOS… most critics complain about lack of pro apps, better file management and faster transfer speeds for USB-C. But then again… multi-tasking could be a hindrance when it comes to iPadOS.

I think since the introduction of mouse support… we need more contextual menus for SplitView or SlideOver, the dragging for multitasking needs to be reworked. Hopefully we get something like this.

Bring Finder and Preview over from the Mac as a start I’d say. Add floating windows and proper external display support and we’d have a start.

Having a better file management would solve the Finder and Preview issue. External display support should be present on the newest iPad Pro and according to rumors… iPadOS will get a redesigned homescreen come WWDC, might bring floating windows, never know.

One can but hope. With regards to Preview, that’s a very capable Mac app that is useful for a ton of things - dearly missing still.

We're in a great era for the iPad Pro right now. The iPad never left. But I think its losing some of its more vocal power users little by little. The software just isn't evolving fast enough. Even I had to give up and admit that once the M1 and Big Sur came out.

Yes, finder and preview would be terrific. Encrypted files/folders. Also decent multitasking (resizable floating windows, unlimited instances of apps, much more intuitive gestures). External displays. Local backups to something other than a Mac. feature parity (or closer to it) in core apps like music and photos. I don’t use the pro creation apps but bringing those over should have happened years ago.

You can get encrypted files/folders through 3rd party apps on iPadOS. I understand most mac users want the same experience to come to the iPad. And tbh, I don't want the "same" experience. I just want certain things tweaked. But unlimited instances of apps? Why? Don't get me wrong... we all want to have apps visibly open to handle certain work tasks.

I've been a heavy iPad user since 2nd generation... and I like the direction iPad has gone through. I'm sure you are thinking of Final Cut Pro and Logic in regards to pro creation apps. But I don't see how pro creation apps should have happened years ago without proper foundation. And if Apple did bring it along, most would complain its half baked.
