Are they pretty well-made? Got a link?

Mostly Hot Toys stuff. I think they look pretty good.

It started with just wanting Avengers 1 Black Widow to collecting all the Widows (I'm only missing the Iron Man 2 version now). Somehow, I also now have TWS Cap, A3 Cap, A1 IM Mk7, A4 Hawkeye/Ronin and A3 Thor with a bunch of Endgame figures on preorder. ??

I want a complete A1 set as well but reluctant to buy those on ebay. I'm still hoping Hot Toys does a 2.0 version of A1 Hulk, Thor, Black Widow and Hawkeye.

You have one up on me iPad-wise haha. I only have two—12.9 and mini. For me, I don’t mind functional overlap as long as a device has a critical unique function. So I really should have said the m1 MBA would have no critical unique function for me, want it as I may. My 12.9 iPP does pretty much everything I would use the MBA for, plus it has pencil input and second display ability which I need. Some tasks the MBA would definitely do better, but either it’s not critical, or if it is, I can use my beefier MBP.

Lol, and here I bought the iPad 7th gen ($229 Cyber Monday 2019) to dedicate for side-by-side PDF markup with the Air 3 at the office. I used to do it on one 12.9" iPad but I found the display uncomfortably small for side-by-side letter size PDFs. Now if Apple had a 14-15" iPad Pro, I would've ditched the 12.9 and upgraded to that instead.

The 12.9" is my American comics reader. I find it too big for normal ebooks and manga, though. A number of my manga are lower res so the artifacts and blurring are very obvious on the 12.9".

The Air 3 and Pro 10.5 are my manga and ebook readers, as well as being my go everywhere/in purse device. This size class is my favorite so I always need to have two (alternating between them when one's charging).

I also have a mini 4 but by the time I got it, I had already acclimated to the 9.7" Air form factor so the mini's the one I use least.

Holy moly, those are near indistinguishable from life! And I didn’t realize how big 1/6 is. You basically have a 1/6 wax museum in your home ?. I can definitely see how one could get carried away collecting these. Thankfully the price stops me before I start lol.

So you actually have 5 iPads in rotation lol wow. Well other than the mini, it sounds like you actually have critical unique functions for each of them, so I think they’re justified (not that you need my approval). The fun thing in life is that each of us finds different functions critical/important to us.

I used to just admire these when I went to the local comic shop but the prices always stopped me, too (several pay raises ago back when the world still had a semblance of normalcy). This year, no car payments, no vacations, no movie theaters (no MCU movie in 2020!), etc. has gotten me ******* crazy enough to pull the trigger. ???

My collection's pretty small and likely to stay that way. I'm pretty much done after the Endgame pre-orders.

This guy's Iron Man collection is drool worthy. I don't have the space and money for that, though.

Really just 3 in active rotation (12.9 and 2x 10.5).

The iPad 7 is always in my office and I treat that similar to a work desktop/laptop (no personal stuff). Overtime more than paid for that anyway.

The mini, well, I thought I'd love it but found it a tad too heavy for my liking. My Kindle and Kobo are around 150-200g which is about my limit for one-handed marathon reading sessions. I still read a lot on the iPad as it's the easiest for direct downloading non-DRM EPUB. In sunlight, near water or when I have a migraine though, e-ink is king.

I can get basic stuff done fine on a Ipad with a MK. But it is definitely less efficient. No floating window interface and a sub par file interface are my two issues. Split view is just annoying at times with some apps not even supporting it fully.

While I plan to keep the iPad Pro around for awhile and do my heavy lifting on a desktop PC ,I can see a arm based MacBook easily in my near future. Probably an air where the only thing important I’m losing is touch.

That’s a lot of Iron Mans. Lol. Amazing.

I wish the iPad mini was a better one-handed device too. I had to put pop a socket on mine which makes it usable one-handed but I’d rather it was just a tad smaller so I could grip the sides somewhat comfortably.

You know, I never really did the math before, I just knew it cost a lot. Did some back-of-the-envelope calculations and it's apparently in the region of $20K.:eek::eek:

I don't think even a PopSocket would make the mini comfortable enough for me to use particularly now that I have RSI (unless I use maybe 4-6 spread across the back).

It does look amazing, but I can't help but think, "what's the point?" haha

I have a MacBook Air coming soon and I'll see if I can go without an iPad. My guess is that the answer will be no.

Oh, the Iron Man House Party Protocol most definitely. I can't afford to spend $20K on figures and have nowhere to store that many.

Admittedly, I just spent the money for the iPP 12.9 1TB WiFi+Cellular to buy the figures. ?

Right now, playing with overpriced Barbies brings me more joy than an iPad upgrade which does exactly the same things my current iPad does would. ?

I think that if Apple offered something similar to Samsung Dex on the iPad Pro, it would have solved many problems about split windows, floatig windows...etc and since they added mouse support to iPad OS, this would increase even more their potentiol. And when not needed, easily could switch to tablet mode that we are using today, with or without split windows. Samsung is doing that on their Android tablets, so there is no reason for Apple to not to be able to do it, in case they wanted.

I do really hope to go iPad Only someday. I am allready doing:

- Sketching / Painting
- Vector Drawing
- Light publishing as there isn’t yet a powerfull publishing app on iPad but rumours suggest that Affinity Publisher will arrive to iPad and it may change the game on that subject.
- Video editting with Luma Fusion ( less efficient compared to desktop apps on my use case, but still, i find it very powerfull and I am able to do almost anything with some workarounds and I am not a pro video editer, far from it.)
- Photo editing
- Media consumption
- I sometimes game on it with xbox controller but I’m not a big gamer.
- Browsing
- Note taking and PDF anotating
- Magazine reading
- Music playing

In my use case, it does almost everything, but I would still need a 3d modelling software like Alias Studio (most probably it will never come) or Rhinoceros and 3d rendering software like keyshot.

I do a lot of the same stuff you do on iPad Pro, and I think a lot of people, whether they're willing to admit it or not, probably could go all-in on iPad. LumaFusion, the Affinity apps, Procreate, etc. are all amazing pro-level iPad apps that really can create high quality content. I still feel like a lot of the people who claim the iPad can't be a productivity/creation device just haven't bothered trying.

The problem for me is not that the iPad Pro isn't good enough anymore. I could still be chugging along just fine on an iPad Pro right now if I had to. It's just that the M1 Macs just took such a gigantic leap forward, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max was already cutting my iPad Pro time in half as it is.

The last time I switched from full time iPad to full time Mac, I regretted it within a month, so I figure if I can make it a month this time without second guessing myself I've probably made the right decision. As of now, without having my M1 MBA in hand yet, it's hard to say for sure.

I agree that the M1 Macs had a major leap forward, almost an unbelleivable one if we did not have the reviews/data/tests on internet where we can see it even tho we may not own a M1 Mac. But in my case, this does not change anything as the reason I am trying to move on iPad only is not all-about the performance. True, they are very powerful machines, especially knowing that I am doing all those stuffs on an iPad Pro that was revealed in 2015 without any hiccups. Actually I am typing this message on my iPad PRo right now.

The reason I use my iPad Pro more than my other devices is the convenience in my case:

- Not having to turn on, shut down..etc, it is enough to put it on sleep. Yes you can do it on a mac too, but I tend to always shut it down. For me it seems safter to shut it down, there may be no valid point behind it but I prefer it that way.
- Portability on my iPad Pro, in my opinion, is better than laptops unless you use a Macbook Air, but still, we are on that level.

- Apple pencil. I have no wish to return to Wacom tablet + cables + computer again. I can take my iPad with me and I can sketch anywhere.

- I can not sketch or take notes/anotate PDF directly on my Mac.

So what I love on my iPad is ALMOST do it all, portable, powerful device for my use case. So the major performance of the M1 Macs does not affect at all my thoughts about an iPad Pro. So I guess that we are on the opposite ends of the choices. I am actually trying to go all iPad but lack of certain 3d modelling and rendering apps are preventing it for me, for now.

The big thing I'll majorly miss is my Apple Pencil. I plan on re-buying/re-learning Affinity Designer and Photo for my new Mac, but I can almost guarantee those apps are not going to be as fun or easy to use without my Apple Pencil. I wish they'd add Apple Pencil support for iPhone so I could still mark up documents and stuff too.

Other than that though, I think they have the Mac up to par with the iPad as far as responsiveness, production of heat, portability (the Air model at least), and instant-on. Now it's time for the iPad to get an M1-style overhaul and blow me away again. Not that it necessarily needs more horsepower. I think the M1 moment for the iPad will be if they majorly overhaul iPadOS. I am not one of those people who wants iPads to run macOS--I love iPadOS--I just think it needs to move even further away from that "big iPhone" paradigm.

Those are art-related, though.

Speaking as someone who works with more boring stuff (multiple Excel spreadsheets simultaneously), the iPad's just not a productivity replacement in terms of the work I do.

At home though, I'm pretty much iPad-only 80-90% of the time. Even back when I used to use a laptop, almost all the personal stuff I do is consumption anyway.

Yeah, I'm kind of a weird bird in that way. I am not a professional artist or graphic designer by any means, but I like knowing how to do those things in case I need that skill for something. It's awesome software knowledge to have in your back pocket, and it has come in handy for me several times.

The problem is that it's not something I NEED to do very often, so my Apple Pencil just kind of sits there unused until the odd vector art or photo editing project comes my way. (I will not use those type of apps with just touch--Pencil is a necessity IMHO.) The software I need most often for random creative projects is LumaFusion, so I'll have to either see how well it works running in macOS or maybe just pony up for FinalCut.

As far as consumption, the 12.9" iPad Pro kind of changed my brain in an unexpected way. Buying the larger model was the right move productivity-wise, because I really needed that extra screen real estate for content creation/productivity tasks. I would never again want to buy an iPad smaller than that. But for consumption, I found that more and more I was reaching for my 11/12 Pro Max instead of the 12.9" iPad simply because they were far lighter and less awkward to hold in my hands, and when I was done, I could just pop them on the charger and go to sleep. Either that or I would just keep the iPad on the Magic Keyboard and use that whole setup in bed so I wouldn't have to hold it or prop it up on something.

So after all that, I realized I had just spent a lot of money turning my iPad Pro into a laptop, when really what I probably needed was just a standard laptop and my large iPhone.

So if it was like Dex, would that mean it’s still just ipadOS but with floating windows? Or would it completely switch to macOS?

iPadOS--I just think it needs to move even further away from that "big iPhone" paradigm.
I don’t think Apple wants to move it too far away though. The two OSes diverged in name but they are still joined at the hip. iPhone even got mouse support along with iPad surprisingly enough! I think Apple wants ipadOS (and iOS) to be first and foremost simple for the everyday person, and it’s very hard to add robust functionality while maintaining simple. They’ve been pushing the envelope, but there will likely always be that constraint.

I never tried to replace my desktop or laptop with an iPad. I bought the iPad 2 for one reason only - reading manga. I was getting neck pain looking down on the laptop screen trying to read manga in bed or the couch.

I just gravitated to using the iPad more and more as both hardware and software improved. I remember back when I had the iPad 2/3, majority of websites didn't work at all on the iPad so web browsing was primarily a laptop/desktop task. Right now, there are still some sites that don't work on iPad but they've gotten a lot fewer.

Granted, I never really gave up the laptop. I just use it a lot less than before. Not a fan of huge phones. I find them too big and awkward when trying to use as phone (hard to juggle groceries and phone) while still being too small for reading, web browsing, etc. The iPads really are my Goldilocks device.

Great summary. This is why iPads have a place. This is actually funny enough what Steve Jobs touted when he first launched the iPad. His vision still stands today.
