So Apple < Tesla?
Yes. Of course Apple is < Tesla when it comes to automobiles. Your silence on BYD crushing Tesla, while criticizing Apple who has never built a car is telling. Also, your answering my two questions with another question is obvious deflection and a clear indication you have no good answer to either.

I would not be qualified.

But Jony Ive would.

Or even Frederighi.

But the bean counter's days are over. You can't just rely on the Steve Jobs innovations are ride those horses until they are dead. You have to come up with something completely unexpected, new, and well crafted.
We might as well close down the planet then. Innovation isn't what it seemed to be.

Tim had high hopes with the Apple Vision Pro but it failed spectacularly. It lacks a killer feature, it lacks a purpose, and it is just too expensive for a toy.

Apple had to cancel multiple products in order to give all resources to the development of this flop device: Apple's Car, the Charging Pad, even the iPhone mini 14 and 15 were canceled because of this.

There might even be a link to Jony Ive's departure from Apple, because he wanted nothing to do with "that stupid goggles".

Tim was chasing the pink dragon with this, now Apple is in a sort of dead end:

Phones without real innovation.

Computers with soldered 8 gigs of RAM.

Watches, that tell the world: this person is a nerdy nerd.

And Apple TV without any serious sports league.

How long can Apple survive with this Mediocrity?

Who will be the next CEO?

There is a lot of imagination in the OP. A lot of speculation and circumstantial evidence.

Shareholders might not care about any specific product line or the failures and successes of a particular CEO. They care about the stock price.

I see Tim’s biggest problem being that Apple stock has been volatile and is stuck in 2021 pricing.

If you’ve read my posts, you know well that my current view of Apple, as a very longtime customer, is widespread disapproval. Yet, if anything will bring an early end to Tim’s reign, or, hopefully, a change in his demeanor, it will likely be due to stock price.

Some things are counterintuitive and therefore not very easy to understand for the majority of people.

The "cult of a person" is usually cultivated by the enemies of that said person whom are they preparing to take down.

The "trash talk" of a person can be used to promote that said person and strengthen his position of power.

You are always end up working for the interests of somebody who knows and understands more than you do.

From 800.000 units to hoping to sell 400.000 units...

and what do they present us today? Apple Arcade on the Vision Pro.

3500$ to play Solitaire ....

Even if they came up with an X-Wing VR game, where you actually feel like you are actually taking one of these fighters into the Death Star Trench run, 3500 would be steep.

But for Solitaire ... Apple has lost all sense...

If you want to spend $3500 on a headset just to play Solitaire, fine.
If you want to spend $350 on a headset just to play Solitaire, fine.

But... you do realize that computers, phones, etc, are capable of doing more than Solitaire, right? Playing it's just a bonus.

There's more important uses for computers. Like playing Mahjong.

Those who defend Tim Cook's performance as CEO claim he's excellent because Apple has made record profits under his leadership. Yet those same people who defend Cook will (rightfully) criticize Steve Ballmer's performance as CEO of Microsoft. Yes, Microsoft made products that were not user-friendly under Ballmer's leadership. But Microsoft made record profits under Ballmer's leadership, and since that's what Tim Cook defenders care about most, why do they criticize Ballmer? It's hypocritical. Such Cook defenders fail to see their lack of logic for criticizing Ballmer.

Really great analogy, and it's eerie to me how similar the handovers at both companies have been. Cook will be well aware of course that his legacy depends on him not being tainted by missing the boat on the next big thing. For Cook that's looking to be AI.

Tim Cook will leave on a high note which we haven’t seen yet
Most people aren’t enthused by the new iPhone as it is similar to the previous years.
AVP was more of a prototype for Apple Glasses
Cancellation of project Titan left Apple with many sellable patents
In any case Tim Cook has something in mind to vault him to the finish line. Be patient

Vision Pro was never going to be an overwhelming success, but that is not the point. Apple’s product line is just fine.

Tim Crook needs to go, but I doubt it happens any time soon due to internal politics. I'd prefer Phil Schiller any time as hands on guy.

Another Apple's fiasco is that they are significantly lagging behind on AI intergration.

I'm a big Apple and SJ fan since 1995 and a former software developer for the platform that was literally going out of business back then. However, never even considered Apple TV, apple watch or AVP. Still stuck with my trusty 2019 iMac due to the lack of upgrades and iPhone X because of the form factor. I have plenty of cash to spend, but Apple is not considering me as a target audience anymore. It's apparent if it wasn't for the iPhone, the company would not survive today.

We never heard anything from Apple about sales figures, just hearsay from rumourmongers. For all we know 400k might be well over their estimates.

In the space of 3 months the Vision Pro has sold double that of its nearest Apple product, the Mac Studio did in the whole of 2023. Not too shabby.

lol, do you honestly think a trillion dollar company needs to can these projects because of their AR aspirations ?

The charging pad was probably dropped because you cannot cheat physics.

The car project is more likely to be dropped because they forgives out the would not be able to compete with China’s state funded car industry: look at what is happening to poor old Elon.

The best helmsmen are on the shore ;)

The fact that Apple is where it is today is in big part thanks to the logistics prowess of Tim Apple.

But Apple, like any other tech company, is limited by the general technological capabilities of the industry: look how long it is taking MS to move to ARM in a decent way… these things are not trivial.

While the googles are useless now, they are still a pinnacle of miniaturization and technology: but the state of that technology is simply not at a level to truly unlock next-gen applications… it’s not like Meta devices are any better or anywhere nearer “the next big thing”

Like I said, the best helmsmen…

Honestly, these kind of posts and the replies to it (mine included) are doing less for the world then they are doing for entropy.
Keep using up those bits guys, keep exhausting those server Watts so you can post ideas about what you think is wrong or right at a company you don’t work for.

I imagine the process of choosing his successor is under way.
Since Steve selected Tim to succeed him long before his death, I’d assume they have someone already. Cook was hired as the COO by Steve when he came back to Apple, so if I were to guess the road to CEO comes from that role, then Jeff Williams “might” be the next guy up.

I think you are spreading some serious misinformation here.
I'd argue that the Apple car was a bigger misstep - rather than a project cancelled to benefit the Vision Pro. The Huawei approach was much more sensible, producing actual components for other cars / autonomous vehicles before attempting to build their own. As a result they've actually launched a car. It's not sexy, but by starting with small steps means you're more likely to be successful in the long run (and you can always fall back on a profitable business selling components to others).

An old boss (turned investor) once said to me that the successful technology is always the one that's both fast and cheap (or at least cheap for what it does). iPhone was this when it launched, and it still represents good value for money. The first M1 Macs were this (we're now jaded because each new step is small).

Visio Pro is too early to tell, but definitely not looking good. They may have missed the boat with Meta/Oculus far ahead (and much, much cheaper). My recommendation would be a serious focus on professional use cases. This will take some serious engagement with developers (and probably developer license terms that aren't offensively one-sided).

I don't think the VR headset is a good idea - it's just far too expensive. But that's my opinion, so feel free to get into an angry rage if you must.

I still wonder what might have been if Apple had kept on with a car project and paired with another car manufacturer to create a specific brand. I'm thinking of a smaller manufacturer with innovative technology. Put the best of both sides together.

It didn't happen so who knows what could have been.

Such Cook defenders fail to see their lack of logic for criticizing Ballmer.
Critics of Ballmer point out that Ballmer didn’t get into hardware soon enough. Ballmer was late to making phones, they only made the software. Watched a video where he said it himself, paraphrasing, “The only two companies that surpassed us were Apple and Samsung and it’s because they made goddamn phones.” Ballmer also disliked doing anything that didn’t make money right away or within a few years.

Both criticisms don’t align with Cook. In fact he just released a product called Apple Vision Pro that isn’t expected to make Apple any money and here you all are criticizing him for it.

I’ve noticed Cook critics don’t specify what he’s doing wrong. It’s all very vague. “Doesn’t innovate.” You all should look up what innovation means. It does not mean “invent product category out of thin air.”

Cook’s Apple released an Apple Watch that is innovative. The Macs went awry and with pressure from us and the press, and with a new research process of observing pros do work, they completely revamped the Macs and brought back ports, battery, and power. The iPhones are about as refined as it can get (as far as features). The iPad software is not at all caught up to its performance capability but it’s underway, it’s not like they completely ignore its potential, and hardware wise they’re about to be upgraded in weeks. So what’s the big flaw here that makes Cook deserving of hate here?

Nobody here is a “Cook defender” this isn’t a cult of personality. I bet everybody here has criticisms of price gouging on spec upgrades and insufficient starting RAM; it’s just that none are reasons for him being replaced.

I think Apple needs someone that can say « This is s*** » to somebody showing you something in the works for months. I don’t think is Tim is (I have the feeling that he is a very politically correct person, but I maybe I’m wrong)

Such is the struggle of all social media, isn't it? I like your style because I totally agree - so many of us waste our breath on forums and message threads with aimless negativity, perhaps hoping for attention or to feel smarter. It's been my experience that most of the time when people are complaining about 'x', they're upset about 'y' elsewhere in their life and 'x' gets to be the proxy.

I had a long career in retail management and in the later years, if someone was being rude or hostile to me or one of my staff, I would look them dead in the eye and ask empathetically, "This isn't the worst thing that's happened to you today, is it?" It worked to diffuse the situation because it put them on the spot to be honest and in good faith, which is nearly impossible online.

The people who aren't here merely to spew negativity need to be active and drown out the BS. We can't make the toxicity go away entirely, but we can influence the discussion.
